NOVEL CONCERT PLANNED Tuesday's Programme at Washing ton Park to Be on Scale Never Before Attempted) In Portland. Troops Will Take Part. With the rattle of real musketry, the booming' of cannon, the clanging of bells, the Bounding of bugle calls and the reproduction of the din of a bat tlefield, the Portland Park band, en larged to 46 pieces, will render a novel entertainment and concert Tuesday night at Washington Park. W. E. Mc Elroy, director of the band, has been working on the programme for several weeks. It will be one of the most dif ficult and interesting musical affairs ever attempted by a band in Portland. , The programme will be a reproduc tton of the fantasia known as "From Fireside to Battlefield." The band, di vided into two separate organizations playing in different parts of the park, will carry out every part of the move ment of troops from the fireside to the battlefield, where a real battle will be reproduced. Company H, of the Ore gon National Guard, has volunteered to assist in the battle part and a number of the leading musicians of the city have volunteered to tamo part in the musical features of the entertainment. The bands will depict the North and tne south, one organization to repre sent the Blue and the other the Gray. The programme will start at 8 P. M. Members of the Grand Army posts of Oregon and their wives are especially invited. There will be no charge for admittance. In addition to the war feature, which will require about 20 minutes to carry out, the band will render a concert of popular and classical music, including among other numbers the humorous sketch, entitled "A Southern Wedding. A hospital will be added to the equip ment of the Jackson County Poorfarm. The building will be ample In propor tions and ready for occupancy in Sep tember. By treating chronic cases at this Institution the county expects to effect quite a saving. Critical and emergency cases requiring special treatment will be taken to the city hos pitals as heretofore.
