Jack Jtyarr, veteran moundsman. pitched a no-hit, no-run game against Portland this morning; on the Venice grounds, tbe first in the Coast League in several years, and the first hitless game In any of the principal leagues this season. Los Angeles took both games. 6 to 1. giving the Angels nve of the seven In the series. Not even the semblance, of a hit was made off Ryan and the only 30 men faced him during the nine innings, three Beavers reaching first base on balls and none getting as far as sec ond. Nine men were fanned by Ryan Both teams also played errorless ball and neither side got Into tbe stolen base column. R yam's Come Bark" Manreloau. Ryan's "come back" performance this season, which readied its climax today, will go down in bnsehall history as unique, lie was unconditionally re lessed two years ago by the St. Paul American Association teaon and early this season he asked President Berry of Los Angeles, for a chance. Berry gave it to him and he has been the main reliance in the box of the team since the season opened. Ryan' and Charles Chech, also of the Los Angeles team, were traded some years ago by Cleveland to the Boston Bed Sox for "Cy" Young and both later were traded to St. PauL Ryan's performance was in direct contrast to the efforts of McCredie's gunners In that forenoon tussle. Ser geant Alfred Carson, late of the Tigers, was the first to make his debut, but he didn't stick long. Carsoa Greeted by Onslaught. The Sergeant was greeted by an on slaught In the opener that netted two tallies, and In the second he was bumped for another count. McCredie derrlcked his plodding soldier man and "Rip" Hagerman. resplendent In his ever-present smile, was seen on the slab at the start of the third. "Rip" waa justified in smiling up to tbe fifth, for he checked the Angel bunch up to that point. The Caps sneaked one over In that frame and batted In a brace In the seventh. Two highly respected twlrlers had their reputations sadly dented in the final go. for both Chech and Krapp were rip-sawed from the mound. Gene Krapp was the first to head the call of the shower. He got oft to a flying start, retiring the Angels in regular order in the first and second chapters. In the third he was- rapped for two tallies, with a scraggly error mixed up in the scoring. ' Beavers Buck Hit. The visitors tied np In the third. Fisher tripled to right center. Krapp walked. Chadbourne singled to left, scoring Fisher. Kills knocked down tbe clout, sprawled headlong in so do ing, but recovered in time to nab Krapp at third. Chadbourne took second on the mix-np and counted when Derrick doubled to left. Tbe sixth finished Krapp. Page walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on Lobers drive to right. Mag- gart sacrificed Tyrus Raymond to sec ond and the blonde-headed youth ram bled across the platter when Howard poked one Over second. McCormlck and Krueger whacked singles oft Chech In tbe seventh and Perrltt was called to the mound. Fisher hit Into a fast double play, McCormick waddling to third. Fitzgerald, batting for Krapp, grounded out. In the eighth, with one down. Der rick singled, Doane was hit by pitcher and Korea hit to mid-field, scoring one and making the counts 4 and 3, with tbe Caps still in the lead. The Angels sewed up the game In their bait, bumping Harry Krause for a brace. Oakland made herself solid in second place in the Pacific Coast League today by tak ing both the morning and afternoon games from San Francisco. In the fore noon contest, held in Oakland, the Oaks managed to scrape two runs out of nine hits, while Killilay pitched such air tight ball that the Seals only managed to hit him twice in the entire game and these netted them no runs. The afternoon score was 6 to 3 In fa vor of the champions. Coy was the batting feature of the afternoon game, taking a home run and two-bagger for his portion. The Seals started out with a lead of two runs, but after the Oaks caught up in the sixth, Douglass was retired. It was not a change for the better, however, for Fanning let two more oross the plate in the eighth. bringing theories to an end disastrous for San Francisco. Players With Tacoma . Squad Few few Faces Ap pear With Invading; club. "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity, the fa mous New York pitcher, will bring his Tacoma Tigers to Portland today for a seven-game series that will give local fans their first glimpse of the rejuvenated Northwestern League squadron. Today's game, as usual, will start at 3:15 o'clock, with Hynes twirling for Portland and one of three, Glrot, Kauf man and Kurfess, on the mound for Tacoma. Tacoma has three ex-Portland play ers in the lineup, two catchers, Harris and Riordan, and Southpaw Glrot. The infield Is not new, with Kordyke. a Northwestern veteran, at first: Keller at second, McMullIn at third and Bur rell at. short. Burrell is the former Syracuse University athlete, who was a star with Vernon two years ago, only to slow up at bat last season. Two Outfielder Known Here. The outfield shows Neighbors and Kennedy and a new man, Harris. McGinnlty'B pitching staff consists of Belford, Concannon, Kurfess, Glrot, Bolce, Kaufman and himself. McGinnity seems to have instilled new enthusiasm into Tacoma fans and at last good crowds are turning out to watch the games. This same pep per has been Inoculated Into his play ers and the Tigers are up in third place and coming strong. They took four out of seven from Spokane last week. The biggest upset . of the week in Northwestern League circles was Van couver's ignominious rout by Seattle. The Dugdale crew walloped Red Brown's bunch six games out of seven and tumbled them from a first place percentage of .714 last Monday to a second place standing of .571 this morning. That's Quite some drop in seven days' time. Colta Gradually Gaining. . The Portland Colts have crept up frem the cellar to fifth place, at least. the past week, even though the count for the Victoria series was three games apiece. Spokane has dropped hard and Cohn's buncb presumably Is In need of just as much strengthening as Port land before the Indians will become pennant contenders. One thing sure. Manager Williams' shift of Speas to first and Callahan and Heilman to the outfield seems to have helped the Colts. Victoria has a strong er club than given credit for and the Colts gave them a battle royal all week long. When Mohler gets back Into the game regularly Nick's bunch should do even better. Gulgni is playing good ball, but the team needs Mohler's generalship and steadying effect both in the infield and outfield. Williams' work behind the bat has been one of the pleasing features of tbe rearrangement. The result puts the Bees In fourth place and Portland in fifth. Getting back to the past tense, the Bees' parting victory al lotted them an even break on the series, three games apiece. Despite threatening rain clouds nearly 2000 fans turned out to say farewell to Lynch. It was a pitchers' battle between Narveson of the Bees and Mays of Portland, and Mays had only himself to blame. He allowed only five scat tered hits, but, in the first inning, walked two men and hit two others, one of his wide shots forcing In what eventually provei io be the winning tallv. Mays faned all three men later on, in the seventh inning. Pitcher la Rare Form. But, despite tbe loss of the contest. It was a good game mechanically and otherwise. Mays and Narveson were both in rare form and both had good support. It was Narveson's second victory of the week, the ex-Western Canada twirler having won the open ing game, 3 to L He was nicked yes terday for but four safe blows, fanned five and walked only one, so was en titled to his game. From a fielding standpoint the rival second Backers, Gulgni of Portland and Cy Swain of Victoria, were as solid as granite. And they were kept merrily busy, too. Swain gobbling In seven red hot assiBts without an error and Gulgni seven assists and three put outs. To Guignl belongs the laurel wreath of the matinee, for he shut off one sure tally by a stellar retrieve of a liner of Melchior's bat. Swain oc cupied third at the time and would have scored another tally but for Melchior's massacre at first. Guignl to Speas. Swain starred at bat with two hits. Wlldneas Costs Game. In detail, Victoria scored one run In the , first on Mays' wildness and the other In the third inning on an infield hit by Rawlings, Brooks' sacrifice and Swain's single to right. Portland tallied the one run in the last of the third on singles by Mays and Guignl and a double steal, in which Mays beat Meek's throw to sec ond and the return by a full yard. The game was rushed off by Um pire Casey in 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Victoria club left .last night for home for a week's series with Spo kane.
