THE MORXIXG OREGOyiAN, MONDAY. MAY 19, 1913. 11 i ' I ' -, I AMTSEMENTS. CAVILL TO REPEAT LEAP F Swimmer, Undaunted by Nar row Escape, to Do Sack Act at Rose Festival. INJURIES NOT DANGEROUS Aqnatio Expert Say He Does Xot Kipcct Watery GraTe ana Places All Blame for Ac-, cident on Helpers. yo watery grare for me. I Intend to repeat my Monte Crlsto sack-dlvlns feat off the Hawthorne bridge during the Rose Festival. My escape at V.'oort land was close, bat that's all in the game and I'll be out In a day or two, little the worse for wear." The above is the gist of an interview with Arthur Cavill. famous Australian swimmer and swimming instructor in the Multnomah Athletic Club, who nar rowly escaped death In a 85-foot leap off the new Pacific Highway bridge at Woodland Saturday, when he smashed Into a large wooden buoy and was ren dered unconscious. Cavill was in bed at his apartments In the Ockley Hotel. S04 Morrison street, when seen by an Interviewer last night. H!s entire left side was swathed In bandages and his arm showed a bad gash, but Dr. James C. Zsn, his physician, entertains no con cern of serious effects. Helpers Are Blamed. "J have done my high sack dive hun dreds of times all over the world," ex plained Cavill. "and this Is my first hand-shake with death. My helpers made a mistake at Woodland. Instead of dropping me In my sand-weighed sack first, and holding the wooden buoy as a trailer like the tall of a kite, they threw the buoy off first and the weight of the buoy on the top of the sack, combined with some careless work in hoisting me off the bridge for the 5-foot leap, turned me over and I lit squarely on top of the buoy. "I didn't know what happened. The terrific crash made me unconscious and I was In a trance until aboard the train, several hours later, headed for Portland. I carry a knifo down with me In the sack so as to cut my self out and I guess It was the knife that gashed my arm." Cavill was asked if his brother Charley was not drowned performing an even simpler feat. "Yes. Charley was killed In 1898 at Stockton. CaU but It was gas poison ing that got him." explained Mr. Cavill. -He was giving an exhibition in a big tank which had formerly been used as an oil reservoir, I believe. One of his tricks was that of remaining 10 or 15 minutes under water. He used an in verted tub as a medium. This tub was floated on the surface and Charley's trick was to dtve underneath and stick his head up under the tub, which was an air reservoir. Brother Killed by Vapors. "In some way the air under the tub. on this particular day, had become poisoned through vapors rising from the water, and he was asphyxiated, not drowned. After he had remained below for 13 minutes somebody scented a tragedy and his body was found In the water. He had been dead several minutes." Despite the fact that Arthur has spent most of his life since 3 years of age In the water, the Multnomah Club expert says he has never really faced death. "I Jumped off a plank In Sydney harbor once and struck a post a few Inches below the surface of the water, the force of the Impact nearly impal ing tie," said he. "But I was but In a few days. Once after that. In 1S05, I got caught In some timbers of a sunken tank in Sydney harbor and nearly drowned before extricating myself. "But. don't Imagine I'm going to die a watery grave. No sir. When I die It will be In bed. like other people.1' Arthur has four other brothers liv ing and three married sisters, all swimmers. Ernie, one of the boys. Is In Australia: Dick, former Instructor In the Chicago and Pittsburg Athletic Club. Is in a circus; Percy is In Florida exhibiting at Palm Beach, and Sid Is Instructor In the Olympio Club in San Francisco. The family Is the most famous swim ming family In the world. PARTY GOES TO ROSEBCRG TO TREAT 1VITII DOCGIiAS. Mass Meetine Called for Today With View or Establishing High way Second to None. ROSEBCRG, Or.. May 18. (Special.) Headed by Judge Hall and Assessor Thrift. 20 prominent citizens of Coos County arrived in Roseburg late to night to confer with local citlsens re garding the construction of a perma nent highway from Roseburg to the Coast. In order that the project may be properly discussed, a mass meeting has been called for tomorrow afternoon, when suggestions will be offered as to the most feasible way to bring about a materialization of the undertaking. At this meeting will be delegates of the Coos Bay Good Roads Association, the Douglas County Good Roads Associa tion, members of the County Courts of two counties and a large number of citizens interested in the improve ment of roads. While no definite plan has been out lined. It has been tentatively decided to interest the County Courts of Coos and Douglas counties in building one permanent highway, which for the present would serve the demands of the traveling public. For many years past two roads have been maintained between Roseburg and Coos Bay with out material success, .Although much money has been spent on these roads, it has been almost Impossible to travel either of them during several months of the year. In concentrating the efforts of the counties in the improvement of one of these roads, it is argued. It will be but a short time when Douglas and Coos counties will be linked by a highway second to none In Southern Oregon. The traftlc between Douglas and Coos counties is heavy during the Summer months and the falling off during the remainder of the year Is attributed to the bad condition of the roads. SHEEP PASTURE CHANGES Washington Herds Moving Toward Reserves Which Open July 4. GOLDENDALE. Wash., May 18. (Special.) Klickitat sheepmen are moving their flocks from the Winter ranges on the Columbia River to the Summer pastures in the vicinity . of Mount Adams. Ten thousand head of sheep have passed through Goldendale during the past week on their way to the bills. The National forest reserves are not thrown open for grazing pur poses until July 4. Klickitat County has 60,000 sheep, the bulk of which graze during the Summer months on the Columbia Na tional forest reserve, part of the Rainier National reserve and some on the Yakima Indian reservation. During the time from now until the opening of the reserves the sheep are held on inter mediate ranges outside the lines of the Government pastures. tr- I x fr-i I:- ' t t! 51 x .. .. SHERIFFS GUARD HIGHWAY Oregon Electric Contractors In Contest Willi County Board. HILLSBORO, Or., May 18. (Special.) Two Deputy Sheriffs by night, and one by day, axe s;uardins; a county road at West Union, six miles northeast of this city, to prevent Oregron Electric contractors from putting; their railway grade across the highway on the Oren-co-TJnited cutoff until the- company Blsns an agreement to put in the cross ing required by the County Commis sioners. There is a seven-foot fill at that point, and the County Board has speci fied that the highway approaches at the crossing: must be planked or grav eled on the right-of-way strip. This was agreed to on all crossings except this, for which the company made no provision. The grading has been held up for two weeks, and the company agrees to settle the dispute Monday, at a special session of the Board. AVinlock Merchants Active. WINlOCK, Wash., May 18. (Spe cial.)
