To Mc Corry's wildnesa at critical times may be ascribed In large part the score of 3 to -1 in favor of Oakland in today's game with San Francisco. There was a marked contrast between th steadi ness of Parkin, of the Oaks, and the erratic work of the Heals' twlrler. .' Johnston. Del Howard's left fielder, tied with Maggart, of Los Angeles, to day for first place In the base stealing division, when he purloined his nine teenth sack In the sixth Inning. Mc Ardle, who was first man up, rapped the ball out over the right garden for -what looked to be good as a hit. but Coy. springing across the field, made a spectacular flying catch. A little later, with two down and Johnston on second. Zimmerman lined a hot one out between second and third. After three weeks at homo Walla Walla and North Yakima invaded hos tile territory In the Western Tri-State League Tuesday. Walla Walla won over Boise, 10 to 8, but North Yakima fell before La Grande, 7 to 6, and Pen dleton trounced Baker, 11 to 7. Though Walla Walla was leading, 9 to 1, against Boise in the sixth, Boise started a batting rally In the ninth and had a look-in for the game until Frlene, for Boise, went to sleep. Boise batted in four runs and, with one down, Frlene was on third. Gard raised a fly to center and Frlene ran home before the ball was caught. Harmon caught It and threw to third for a double, ending the game. He haa been walked deliberately so many times that he threw his bat away yesterday and stood there. Hynes tried to throw strikes then, but failed. Coltrin negotiated a remarkable catch in the fourth Inning, when he leaped into the air like a xrlgntenea kangaroo and pulled down Moore's red-hot drive with one hand. He saved the game. It develops, for Lynch followed with a hit that might have tallied Meek. In another month Murray should be a good catcher. He Is getting ail the bad baseball out of hia system now. He threw to third yesterday and filled the bases In the eighth after the runner waa safely there. Hynes then forced him In. but it ' was not all Hynea fault. Catcher Meek tried to steal second base In the ninth lnnlns? and waa caught about 88 feet short. Callahan made a wonderful throw to the plate early 1n the game from lett field, and caught Delmaa by 15 feet. Hla peg was on a dead line and did not hit the ground at all. Unpack the plumage for Nicholas Williams and forget not to hang his portrait in the Salon of Swat. The manager of the Portland Colts showed rare mettle yesterday by in jecting himself against the Victoria Bees as a plnoh hitter with the bases full and the score S-2 against him. He showed more than nerve, for he whacked out a terrific liner that scored two men and gave Portland a 4-3 vic tory, which constituted one of the most memorable ninth-Inning rallies ever staged on the Portland lot. Up to the last of the ninth Victoria had played rings around the Colts. Hardin had simply toyed with the Colts and had allowed only one hit in eight rainy, muddy frames. Meanwhile Hynes had been knocked out of the box, Ag new pulling the game from the fire and then retiring In favor of MartlnonL Then came the ninth, last half, with the score 3-0 in favor of Victoria. Callahan opened with a clean single to left field; put in a few boosts for him today. Speas went safe on some slow headwork by Rawlings, who neg lected to touch second. Next circle Hellmann in blazing gems of praise for the lad picked out a fat one and planked It on a line for two bases, scor ing two runs and putting the Colts within reaching distance. One thousand frantic bugs waited In the exits, Murray approached the plate. Hardin, a trifle shaky, walked him, filling the bases. More huzzas and banzals by the crowd. "Williams batting for Martlnonl" an nounced Umpire Casey as Nick strode to the plate with a long bludgeon and a determined look. Hardin put every thing he had on the next two balls, but. Williams looked them over care fully, selected one to his liking, and cracked it out for a clean two-bagger into right center. Hellmann and Murray waltzed in with the winning runs and the game was over, Williams gets credit for only a single because a single would hao scored the two, but drat the technical stuff. He was sitting on the bag be fore the outfielders touched the ball. It was a lucky thing for Portland that Willams reposed near the arnica bottle on the bench. He awoke too stiff yesterday to get into the game, as a result of his initial catching experi ence on Monday. But for Nick's stiff ligaments that pinch wallop might still be giving absent treatment or be stored away for the Winter league. Now for the spavined section of the game. Hynes got along fairly well un til the sixth inning, when two doubles by Brooks and Meek, Lynch's single and a sacrifice fly scored two runs. Hynes filled the bases again the next inning, this time deliberately walking Meek, but he scraped out of that cav ity. But when he struck the grease again in the eighth, filled the bases and then forced in a run. Manager Wil liams derricked him. Agnew retired three men in a row and stemmed the assault, "Toots" then gave way to Mahoney, a pinch hitter, and Martlnonl twirled the ninth inning and gets credit for the victory. Williams, Mohler and Mahoney were all out of the game yesterday, Wil liams and Mohler through stiffness and Mahoney because of a hitting slump. Series now one. game apiece.
