THE MORNING .OREGOXIAS. WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1913. - I I TRAVCLERS' GriDK. FEW GUPS SELLING Trading in Oregon Now Is on Free Wool Basis. CONSIGNMENTS BEING MADE Majority, of Giowfrs Are Disposed to Hold Back for Public SalM Pay. Operations In Neighbor ing States on Sninll Scale. The little business that Is P3M"i I" tne Orecon wool market now Is practically on a fr..wool ban!. A number of clips were botmht In th- past few t price ranr in fmm 1 u. e 2e nnder Nat year- market. Some consignment are also being- made to Boston. No larne quantity haa been either ni r rnnslrned. however, and It la only odd lota that are belna- disposed of. The rrowera are not ahowlns a lenersl Inclination to let go at thia time, preferln ts hold their clip for the public ealre daya. when the dealer believe the -offerlnE will be on a free scale. The sam Inactivity prevail In the val ley. Dealers are willing to take hold at He for coarse and 1 eenta for me dium, but these terms are not satisfactory to farmers. Soma contracts have been placed In Idaho at prices ranrlns from 13014HC Wyoming Is still nulet. and It Is believed consign ments from that state will be heavy. A few purchases are reported from Utah. In southern Utah but little wool remain to he aold. California buyers have bought Ne-v.rt.- wool mt 12 cents. Another Nevada rim wu beurht br a Boeton firm at an es titrated clear cost of about 50 cents landed. Commenting on the Eastern situation, the Boston Commercial Bulletin says: Th market for wool and wool textiles la still hedged about with much uncertainty. the majority, both of manufacturers and wool merchant, are Indisposed to on dertake new contracts at the ratea at which new business la possible. The exception to this rule is found either In the cass of the few optimists among the dealer who are taking a little wool again this week In the U'rst. or else In the esse of those few nun. iirnrtnrri who have some Immediate needs to cover, and for tho wools they want will pay rates considerably bjgher than those which the new clip wools ar likely to bring. "To complicate the price question still further, the new clip wools are beginning to arrive, althousu not In large quantities as y;t- For these wools manufacturers are very loth, apparently, to pay a price In -e of a half dollar clean basis, tome new I'tahs have been offered at 17 cents, which would Drobably exeeed this cost, and It Is understood that no sale have been made. A little Arizona wool and some fat sheeps' wool has sold, which would figure out about on this basis." CALIFORNIA BIDS TP FOR WHEAT Japanese Are Also lnMarket Stronger Than They Were. A firmer tone was evident In the wheat market yesterday, but there was not much Increase In activity. California came through at a little better prices, and the Japanese were In tho market stronger than they have been. There is eonllnud talk of new flour business being done with the Orient, but the volume of trade is evidently small. Clui was Quoted firm at 80 cents. Jllnestem was quiet, although there was more disposition to bid up. Oats and barley were firm. The Eastern advance in oats Is expected to strengthen the Montana market and make it necessary for the Government to fill Its order here. All kinds of mlllfeed are quoted strong, and the market has an upward tendency. In 1908 feed conditions were similar to those at present, starting in February and March at SIS. feed arose, during th two succeeding months, sbtne $ a ton. Mills were heavily oversold on mill feed, and as export business dropped off, settled with customers for Large sums of money. This year prlcea etarted up with mills al most bare of feed and retail and warehouse trade buying from hand to mouth, as at present. Only about halt a doien mills today are running In the entire Northwest, and of these, three contemplate shutting down this month. Owing to the long drouth In California, the demand is increasing rap idly and prices rising, with almost no stuff to offer. The outlook is that prices will rise to i-1 and J:.0 within the next an daya. Retailers and warehousers In the valley and elsewhere ar waking up to the fact that there will be no feed to be bought In a short time, as none Is being made, snd they sre putting In stocks. It will be shortly a ques tion not of price but of getting feed at art. STOCKS EASILY ADVANCED Rewaruption of TrarUng on European Exchanges After Triple Holiday Is Kavorahle Influence Short " Interest Is Heavy- NEW YORK. May IS. The drift of prices on tho stock exchange wa upward today, and while the volume of business remained small and the movement was nothing more than a slow, creeping advance, the close of the session found not a few of tho leading share a point or so higher than at th close yesterdsy. Speculation still reflected the reluctance of trader to com mit themselve heavily on either side of the market. An Important feature of the day's trading was the absence of selling pressure. Stocks were scarce and it was inferred that th market was again In a sold-out condition, which made the technical position compar atively au-ong. The borrowl-ig demand for sieel In particular was unusually heavy, and estimates of ttfe sis of the short In terest in this speculative favorite ran into largo figures Traders took advantage of conditions to force a rally at th expense of tho bears, whos efforts to cover aided In placing stocks on a higher range. v- Kesuraptlon of trading on tho European exchanges after a trlpl holiday wa of In fluence on this market. Notwithstanding th firm undertone of th market, there was some further selling of stocks which hsve exhibited marked heaviness recently. Several stocks, includ ing Pennsylvania and Jersey Central, touched new low records for the movement- Canadian Pacific was sold persistently, at ono time falling back more than two points. Trading In Consolidated Gas was unusual ly active, and tnat stock was one or to stromc features of the list. Bonds were steady. Total salss, par value, tl.250.O0O.
