RANK FORGERIES FOUND SAX FRANCISCO REGISTERED COTTPIE 'BEAT HOTEL HERE. Miss Josephine Blount and Arthur Pearsall "Pat One Over" When Same "Game" Is Worked. Nothing In the appearance of Miss Josephine Blount Indicated that she was other than a modest young wo man, attractive and quite fashionable, during her several days' stay at the Multnomah hotel. Neither was the de meanor of Arthur Pearsall. plausible, neatly-dressed young man, such as to arouse suspicion during his concur rent stay at the same hostelry. Both registered last week as from San Fran cisco, but at the time they did not ap pear to be acquainted. So it was a sad blow to several trusting clerks and other attaches when two certified checks on San Francisco banks, the one Indorsed by Miss Blount and the other by Mr. Pearsall. came back, early this week, branded by the purported banks of issue as rank forgeries. Rudely awak ened, the management proceeded to the office of the District Attorney and pro cured felony informations against the pair, and warrants are now in the bands of the Constable, with an in finitesimal chance of serving them. Miss Blount arrived at the hotel last week, alone. Her manner' of conduct ing herself was unobtrusive and she managed to inspire the hotel people with confidence whUe not making an obvious attempt to that end. About the same time, but Independently, Mr. Pearsall arrived. He cultivated an ex tensive lobby acquaintance, but ap peared entirely solvent and made none of the small "breaks" which usually lay the hotel beat open to suspicion. So, when he proffered what appeared to be a certified check for $100 on a San Francisco bank, the paper was ac cepted without suspicion. Then Mr. Pearsall suddenly disappeared, forget ting to pay a bill of JS0 for hotel serv ices. Miss Blount's method of proceeding was still more Insidious. She was din ing in the grill room when she sud denly discovered that she was without ready money, and offered the waiter a certified check for 100. According to custom he carried the paper to the cashier, who, seeing the certification, "O. K.'d" It without suspicion. A day or two later Miss Blount paid her bill and was conveyed to the railroad sta tion. When the two checks came back simultaneously, the similarity of the two transactions caused Inquiry to be made, and it was then found that the man and woman, though avoiding each other in the more publlo places of the hotel, had taken their meals together frequently In secluded nooks of the restaurant. That they are a pair of "hotel beats" Is not questioned. Uttle prospect is seen of their being cap tured unless they repeat the perform ance In some other city. Divorce Decrees Granted. OREGON CITY.
