17 THE MORNING OREGONIAN. TUESL aY, DECEMBER 24, 1912. - r . ' . ; : . i WHEAT BIOS LIFTED Market Is Helped by the Better Demand for Flour. FARMERS ARE VERY FIRM One JJcsult of Improved Foreign Trade Is Weakening of Mlllfeed Values at Xorth Pacific Ports. CoaifO Craln9 Uncbangcd. . The improvement In the export flour trade has had a strengthening effect on all grades of wheat in the Northwestern market. It has caused a. broader buying movement, particularly on the part of the Puget Sound mills. The active demand that has existed In tli country districts for several daya has made the farmers more Indisposed to soil than ever, and purchases have only been effected by bidding higher prices. Club wheat was quoted in the market yesterday at 75&80 cents, f-rtyfold at 081 cents, and blue-tern at S3 cents. Another result of the larger trade in export flour has been tha weakening of the mill feed market. Bran and shorts were auoted 50 cents lower yesterday than last week, and if the weather continues un changed and the mills still operate as they have been doing, a further reduction In local values Is likely. There was no change in the local oats or barley markets. December barley had another drop at San Francisco yentorday. Local receipts. In cars, were reported by the Merchants' Kxchange as follows: Whrat-Barlcy.Flour.Oati.Hay. The CThrlstmas turkey market came to a close unusually early In the day. Receipts were lighter than generally expected and the market cleaned up quickly. Most of the choice turkeys sold around the 23 cent mark, and the market was firm at that figure. Had the supply been as large as some of the dealers looked for, there is no doubt whatever but that the prices would have been broken, as the demand at no time was heavy. As it was, the supply was Just about ample for the requirements, and a good healthy market was the result. Other dressed poultry sold well at firm prices. Ducks brought I7tt'$20 cents, geese 15ffl! cents and the best chickens 16 cents. Live poultry was slow. The egg market was a dull and weak af fair. Candled Oregons were offered at oO cents, but few were sold. HOP SALES IN GRANTS FASS SECTION Several Lots Disposed of. One of Choice (jttallty. GRANTS PASS, Or., Dec iX On Satur day three of the local hopgrowers sold part of their crops. Clute & Pernoll sold 15 bales to a San Francisco buyer, receiving close to 20 cents; 75 bales were sold by Cook 4c Rexford. and the Leonard Orchard Company sold 76 bales. These hops were not of the best grade. The Flanagan-Cornell cropi consisting of between 400 and 50O bales, has not yet been sold, and there are several smaller growers atill holding their crops. A new method-4f. cs.rhkg for the yards Is being Inaugurated by Clute ft Pernoll this year by Winter cultivation, and in that way they will have all the plowing and harrow ing done hefore the Sprlns growth begins. BEARS ARE STILL BUSY Trading During the Day Is Dull and Professional With No Decision in Minnesota Kato Case, Prices ' Arx Temporarily Advanced. Eff.l'ORK, De& 23. The irregular fluc tuations of stocks today Indicated that the market waa still on an uncertain footing. The trend as a whole, however, was toward a lower level and at the end of the day a large part of the leading Issues had fallen a point or more. Trading was dull and pro fessional. Uncertainty whether the Supreme Court would announce its decision in the Minne sota rate case restricted trading in the morning and the bear element took ad vantage of the situation to bring about a recession. With the announcement that no decision would be announced today, there came a sharp upward -movement, during which Union Pacific rose two points above the last quotation on Saturday. The gains were nuick.lv lost, however, and during the remainder of the session, the tendency was downward. The call money rate rose to six per cent late In the day, which may havo been a factor in the heaviness of the stock market. With the easing of the strain In Europe, less apprehension is felt as to the monetary condition at the end of the year. Baltimore 4 Ohio, the first of the large railroad systems to make Its November re ports, showed a further gain In revenue. The net returns Increased nearly $500,000 over the corresponding month of 1011. The hond market moved irregularly to day, but fluctuations were unusually nar row. Total sales, par value, $1,263,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported by J. C. Wilson Col, Lewis building, Portland. Closing Sils. High. Low. Bid.
