ABDUCTOR IS NOW IN JAIL Tragedy Follows Courtship by Mail When Young- Man's Acquaintance 'v Secnre'a Girl's Picture anil Meets Her at Train. Held incommunicado by her abductor, who was armed with two revolvers. T'omlcela Truakawska, the 22-year-old Polish girl who was stolen from her sweetheart. Joseph Alzbertr. in Seattle, lour months ago, was last night re covered at 660 Front street by Ser geant Harms and Plainclothes Police men Long, Wise and Holland. Michael Mereckes. who came with her from Selltle, and for whom the Seattle police and the United States immigration au thorities are searching, was arrested and is being held, charged with a viola tion of the Mann act. Mereckes appeared at the door of the cottage, armed with two revolvers, when the officers knocked, but he was not allowed to make any use of them, being overpowered before he could shoot. The girl, frightened and weep ing, was placed in the care of the police matron. Through a correspondence courtship, Joseph Alzberg, a laborer in Seattle, and the girl, who lived at his home town, Rosleny. near Kovna, Poland, were engaged to be married. Alzberg sent a ticket to her to come to Seattle. Mereckes. hearing of the arrangement, stole a picture of the girl and awaited her coming. She was to recognize Alz berg by a photo which he had sent her. When she arrived Mereckes approached her, but when she said that he was not the man In the photograph, hp told her he had been working in a mine, and 4tad changed in appearance. Half be lleving, she went with him. . . He kept her out of the reach of Polish people in Seattle and in Bremer ton, where they went in two days, and In a week hurried her on a train for Portland, where they have been for more than three months. Mereckes was formerly a watchman In the Navy-Yard at Bremerton. He Is held in the County Jail without bail. The Seattle authorities were notified. SNEAKTHIEF IS CAPTURED George Walters In Jail Here Has Criminal Record.' After burglarizing two rooms and being shot at twice while trying to enter a third in a hotel at First and Couch streets early yesterday, George Walters, alias Tucker, 22 years old, was arrested by Policemen Chrtstoffer tori and Maas. Walters, In his stock ing feet and without coat or hat, is accused of first entering the room of Charles Smith and securing 12.25 in cash by cutting ojlen a suitcase with a pocket knive. From there he is said to have made his way by the fire es cape to another room, whero he se cured nothing. The prowler was in the act of going through a door, into . the room of J. C. Roach .when . Air. Roach opened fire on him with a re volver. His aim was bad and the man escaped, but Walters was arrested soon afterwards. In looking up his record the police found that he was released from jail in Seattle in September, after serving 60 days for vagrancy. He was arrested in Portland last week and released on suspended sentence, the charge being "after hours." JAPANESE BUYING TRAMPS Orientals Rapidly Acquiring Many Trans-Pacific Vessels. That the Japanese marine interests are gradually preparing to absorb the greater portion of the trans-Pacific tramp steamer business is apparent by the number of tramps that they now have In service and the prompt pur chase of other vessels when offered for sale. Four tramp Japanese steamers are now listed for this port and eight for Puget Sound, all carrying products of America to the Orient. wnen tney first started in this business, Ameri cans, familiar with the business, were engaged aa agents at the different ports, but now every steamship com pany maintains its own offices with a full Japanese force, having acquired the - nces3aV.Jtarhnlcal shipping knowledge. There is not a single tramp steam ship flying the American flag on the Pacific Ocean. One American firm has a few vessels in this business, but they are under British registry and fly the flag of that country. Breakwater Keeps Inside Bay. Almost for the first time In the his tory of the sailing of the steamer Breakwater between Portland and Coos Bay. she is barbound at Coos Bay and did not arrive here yesterday on sched ule. With the prevalent southeast gahs it must have made the Coos Bay un usually rough or Captain Macgenn would have brought the Breakwater through on schedule time. No report was re ceived from Coos Bay last night, so it Is possible that the vessel may be de tained from other causes, possibly as sisting another vessel in distress. Marine Notes. The barkentine Hawaii Is reported to have been towed Into Newcastle. X. S. W., with her steering gear dis abled. The four-masted schooner Irene sailed yesterday from San Pedro and will load as usual with lumber for a return to the same port. The oil tank steamer Maverick, of the Standard Oil Company fleet, ar rived yesterday from California with a cargo of fuel oil for Portsmouth. Flags are at half mast throughout the waterfront out of respect to the memory of the late Jacob Kamm and will remain so until after his funeral. The steam schooners Tamalpais, Olympic and Wasp arrived yesterday from California with general freight and will load lumber for their return. It has been decided that the new of fices of the Harvard and Tale will be with the Denver & Rio Grande in the Failing building at Third and Wash ington streets. In order that the steamer Beaver might get away today, a day ahead of her regular schedule, her cargo was worked yesterday and she will be ready to sail at the time announced. The steam schooners Willamette and Coaster were expected to show up off the mouth of the river last evening, as the southeast storm was expected to push them along, but North Head docs not report them in sight. A. O. I. Kerrell, general passenger agent of the San Francisco & Portland Steamship Company, returned to San Francisco Saturday night after mak- lug tentative arrangements lor a new city office in Portland. Harry Campion, who is recovering from an attack of typhoid fever, will leave today on the Beaver for Southern California, where he will remain for a month at least. He will be accom panied by Mrs. Campion and their child. The schooner Golden Shore, now at Coquimbo, has been chartered by the Mohns Commercial Company for lum ber from the Columbia River to Toc opilla direct at 62s 6d. This is rutty two shillings below the market price that has existed for the past year. Captain Savary, of the French bark Marechal de Villars. which Is discharg ing ballast at Linnton preparatory to loading grain for Europe, entertained a number- of shipping men and their wives aboard yesterday at dinner. The dinner of 14 courses was prepared and served by the regular chef of the vessel. Movements of Vessels. San Francisco, Dec. 15. Ftorgerles Are Admitted and Physi cian Says Penitentiary Is Only Cure for His Drug Habit. Unable to kill himself with drugs because his system, through long use, withstands quantities which would kill men not accustomed to the drug, Dr. Millard Mayfield, a practitioner of 20 years" experience, last night begged to be given a penitentiary sentence so that he might fight the drug habit in jail. Under the name of Bert Stevens he was arrested by Patrolman tcnir- mer. charged with two forgeries and with having "needles" In his posses sion. He asks for one to seven years In the Penitentiary, saying that in less than a year he cannot rid himself of the habit. Dr. Mayfield. who is well Known in Sacramento and San Francisco, where he has relatives, forged two checks yesterday, one for food and one for morphine, of which he takes from 15 to 20 grains a day. He had in his possession when arrested at the office of Dr. W. W. Bruce, 129 V, Grand venue, forged prescriptions, signed by the names of several physicians, each calling for SO grains of morphine. Blank checks also in his pockets led the officer to believe that he had al ready passed spurious checks, and un der examination he admitted passing two, one upon Nick Nissiros. a restau rant man at 128 Grand avenue, and one upon G. Rosendorff. a druggist Grand avenue and Bast Stark street, where he purchased morphine. He gave his name in both places as Bert Stevens, a laborer, 35 years old. A dose of nitroglycerin, atropine, co caine and morphine, the latter in greater quantity than would produce death in another man, failed to kill him recently, when, he says, he took it with suicidal Intent. Finding that it did not succeed, he neutralized its ef fect with other drugs. Then, he says, when he found that he must "needle" a solution of arsenic into his body to keep his heart working, he decided that a prison term was necessary, if he must live. Dr. Mayfield. when taken to the po lice station, stuck to his fictitious name of Stevens until confronted by Officer Long, who recognized him as Dr. May field. Then he admitted his identity and said that he had intended to take his prison term under an assumed name. He had lost 70 pounds in six months and was reduced to about 100 pounds in weight. Dr. Mayfleld's relatives are said to be well known in Sacramento and San Francisco, where, several years ago. ne specialized in difficult operations. One of these, he says, was the placing or a pig s Kidney In H. Robertson, an employe of the Southern Pacific Rail way. The operation. Dr. Mayfield says, was successful, Robertson recovering from his kidney trouble, and now being alive. His confession was only obtained after he hau been fortified by admin istering morphine. Jury Disagrees In Game Law Case. KLAMATH FALLS. Or., Dec. 15. (Special.) The Jury disagreed in the case of James McFerrln, charged with trapping and killing a beaver. The complaint was filed by J. J. Ferber, a game warden, who says that he found the trap and watched McFerrln until the beaver was caught and killed, and that he saw the beaver in the trap. s Smallpox Causes Schools to Close.
