THE MORNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1013. li JONES NOT SOUGHT Herrmann Says Rumor Is One of Murphy's Jokes. REDS HAVE NO DEAL ON KcCredie Xot Surprised at McLean1 Arrest Ix6S of Pennant In 1905 Ascribed ' to Cincinnati Back stop's IOTe of ' Drink. "Chutiby" MurohT. th Chicaa-o base ball -magnate, la a private storehouse for newspaper stories. When there Is nothing: legitimate to feed to the puD 11c, Murphy concocts excitement. 11 ebullition Saturday, when he an nounced that Fielder Jones would man age the Cincinnati Nationals next year. apparently belongs to the concocted class. At least President Herrmann, of the Reds, so says, and Garry should know. "That must be one of Murphy's Jokes," said Herrmann when asked for an interview for the telegraph wires. "I certainly know of no deal for Jones, and Jones had never entered my head as my next year's manager." Jones is now In the East, but Is ex pected home sometime this week, Wal ter lleCredle. manager, of the Port land Coasters, says he doesn't think the American League would consider letting Jones go to the older circuit, even if Jones so desired. "They might, of course. If they got Frank Chance In return, but I don t think there Is bit of foundation to the rumor,1 said he. Walter smiled a sad, sweet smile when one of the hangers-on around baseball headquarters shoved a news paper account of Larry McLeans ar rest in the East for passing a bogus check under his nose. "Nothing that Larry does can sur prise me," philosophized the Portland magnate. "His terrible liking for booze cost me a pennant in 1905, and, while I believe he is one of the best catchers in the business when he Is right. I wouldn't have him around me again if he paid for the privilege. "Where did yon get McLean?" some one suggested. "Traded Pitcher Jake Thielman to St. Louis for him," replied Manager McCredle. "For two seasons I was continually In hot water and was glad to dispose of him for $2500 to Cincinnati at the close of the 1906 season. . I will never forgive him for his detection In 1906, Three weeks before the close of the season Portland was half a game to the good. Then McLean and Pitcher Gar vin, now dead, went on a drunk and we lost. Tacoma won the pennant the first half of that season and Los An geles the second. In the playoff Los Angeles won. Sacramento fans are priding them selves on a strong Infield for 1913. and a glimpse over the lineup shows a good foundation for their confidence. Manager Harry Wolverton will hold down third base; Tom Downey, former utility man for Chicago, secured 1 the traie for McDonald, of Boston, will play short; Patsy O'Rourke has signed his 1913 contract and announced a wil lingness to stay at second next season, while Hughle Miller will again be sta tioned at first. I-os Angeles baseball Solomons have ' already doped out the outfield arrange. ment lor the Angeles for next season Seymour is being booked for left field. Maggart for center and Ivan Howard for right field. Dillon may open the " year with these three players, but they will Have to travel some to keep Lefty Lober out of the lineup. Lober Is young, but fast as a bullet and pos sessed of a magnificent arm. His one weakness is batting against left handed pitchers, and It may be Dillon will use him only when right-hand pitchers are on the mound. Seymour always has been a great batsman, and he comes to the Coast League with a .300 average guarantee, but. offsetting this, are Cyrus' 38 years ana nls bearish disposition. Cyrus Bentley fell from major league grace in lmo. when, on August 22, he was transferred by the New York Giants to Baltimore. Seymour Inaugurated his big league career as a pitcher with the Giants. when Bill Joyce was managing. He was a left-hander, with a wonderful assortment of curves, but after vainly trying to control them, was converted into an outfielder for his batting. He developed Into a star outfielder with Cincinnati, and then went back to New York, where he held down center on the 1905 champion Mathewson and Ames are the only remnants of that great machine. The lnfielders were McGann, Gilbert and Daihlen. with Seymour and Devlin in the outfield. The catchers were Bresnahan and Bbwerman, and the. pitchers Ames. Mathewson. Mculnnlty and Taylor.
