Portland cored a knockout In the first round. Burins; the nine spasms there were 21 runs. 31 hits, nine errors and seven 'stolen bases, with the advantage always In Portland's favor. The Beavers took ten runs in the first two innings and after that they were so tired that they took' things easy. They did so nicely and the Sen ators did so badly that a thousand or so Sacramento fans were yelling lustily throughout the consecutive innings for Portland to make five runs each time. Baum started the game for the Sen ators. He had nothing, not even sup port. Doane began things by beating out a bunt. Baum was too lazy to go after it. Chadbourne went out. Sheehan to Miller. Doane going to second on the play. Lindsay rapped a high fly which Shlnn dropped at second base.- Rodgers lined out to center field and Swain fumbled the ball, two men scoring. Krueger thought the pickings in cen ter so good that he sent a hard one Into that territory and Swain proceed ed to lose the ball In the grass while Krueger completed- the circuit. -Fisher Makes) First Homer. Fisher followed and put the ball over the right field fence. Butler added a Ingle to the total, but was thrown out while trying to steal second. Rapps grounded out. That ended the first Inning and that also concluded Baum's occupancy of the mound. The Sena tors went out one. two, three, and at the start of the second, Byram was sent in. This Is what happened to Byram. Koestner went out, Sheehan to Mil ler. Doane beat out an Infield hit and then stole second. Chadbourne walked and while he was doing this Doane stole third. Chadbourne stole second. Lindsay was safe when Helster dropped his pop fly. Then Rodgers rapped for two bags. Krueger followed with a three bagger, Fisher fouled out. Butler ilngled and Rapps flew out. It yielded a total of five more runs. Sacramento took one run in the sec ond. - Swain hit for three bags and scored on Helster's out. Another was taken in the third when Byram singled and Lewis and Williams followed with outfield outs. Portland added to its total in the fourth, when Fisher put the ball ever the fence for the second time. Sacra mento responded by putting over two runs on a two-bagger by Kreits and singles by Byram, Irelan and Lewis. The Beavers came back in the fifth and annexed one run on singles by Doane, Chadbourne and Lindsay. Another was added In the seventh when Doane sin gled, stole second and Chadbourne lined out a safe one. Portland's final run came in the ninth, vhen Fisher sin gled to right, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Rapps' out. Sacramento did Its best work In the eighth when Helster singled. Sheehan was safe on an error. Byram doubled and Irelan sent the ball into right field, three runners scoring. O'Rourke was out of the gams be cause of Injuries received Sunday, when be was spiked. Koestner was hit hard, but after the second inning he realised the joke and simply lobbed them over. Score 7-4. The game was the usual- series- opener, with neither team penorming up to the standard of excellence so no ticeable in mid-week tussles. Frank Eastley won his game, not because of his own sufficiency, but chiefly because of the inefficiency of the Agnew-Thomas combination. - Eaatley Wild at Start. Eastley started off like a soon-to-be bench-warmer, walking three men in the first inning and squeezing a run across the plate when one of the passed individuals had no place to go. He managed to stave off further scor ing for a time, although he was in trouble in the second and fourth. In the seventh and eighth, clean hitting, coupled with a base Issued in the "hit by pitched ball" department, gave the Canucks three scores. This was enough to collect scattering attention, but not sufficient to score a victory. In the first inning the Colts filled the bases with none gone, but a dou ble play and an infield out put the quietus on scoring. The same - thing happened In the seoond, a want ana two puzzling bunts to the Infield plac ing three Colts in position to score when Ed Klppert slipped to the grass in left field, permitting Eddie Men sor"s drive to go for three sacks. Cruik shank scored him a moment later with an infield hit. Kibble broke into the home-run col umn in the third inning, lifting the ball manv feet over the right field wall, This brought the total of runs to five and resulted in the relegation or Ag new to the bench. Blaine Thomas, the Victoria speed- demon of last season, sold to. Boston, turned over to Sacramento, and turned adrift by the Senators, pitched for five Innings. The Colts only hit him safely twice, but Thomas issued seven bases on bails, hit one batsman, and chalked uo two wild' pitches. Two walks, two errors, with Thomas accountable for one of the rolsoues. and a single, scored two Colts in the fourth inning, but after that the Thomas luck held the Colts from the plate.
