GENERAL MARKET FIRM Traffic Men Report Business Hold ing Up Well, but Congestion Re sults Krom Car Shortage. Advance in Call Money. NEW YORK. April 1. After a brief Irreg ular period and confusion In price, the stock market today resumed Us upward movement In the industrials. Amalgamated Copper aold at Its highest price and gains of from one to two points wore made by Anaconda Copper. Utah Cop per and Tennessee Copper, while American Smelting and United States Steel recovered some of the ground lost last week. It is noteworthy that railway stocks were far less conspicuous than the other group. The further rise in the copper stocks was concurrent with another advance in the price of metal, which was quoted at 15c to 16c per pound. The day's labor news was a mixture of good and indifferent, with a better outlook In the textile districts. Weekly reports of the western traffic man agers indicate that business Is holding up well, although congestion has resulted from the car shortage. An advance In call money to 3 per cent, together with profit taking, produced dull ness and fractional recessions in the last hour, but the undertone was firm. The rise In money waa a natural corollary to last Saturday's bank statement. In which actual reserve were all but depleted. It may be as sumed that this condition will be rectified In a week, as a large proportion of the April 1 Interest and dividend payments is certain to go back Into bank coffers. The day's rsllroad returns for February included tho Pennsylvania system, its east ern lines Increasing about $SOO,000 net. with those west of Pittsburg Increasing $300,000. The returns of New York Central were fav orable, as also were Northern Pacific and St, Lnuls Southwestern. Illinois' Central lost almost toOO.OOO net and the Atlantic Coast Line docreased $128,000.
