Supplied by the unwary cashier of tha Slate Bank of Rainier, Wash., with Information Just how tn defraud the bank out of f 300, a clever operator promptly went ahead and did so. The story came to light yesterday tn the arrest al Marlon. Ind.. of Joseph K. Landgrave, a telegraph operator. 24 yeara of age. employed by the Spokane, Portland ex Seattle lialiroad at Bcap pooae. Or. Landgrave Is said to have confessed his crime and win not fight extradition. He had 1311 when ar rested. He waa arrested on Informa tion supplied by the Portland office of the Plnkerton Detective Agency. I-andgrave ta said first to have ap peared at the bank on February 5. seeking to cash a check drawn on the Bank of Demlng. X. M, for I&00 made payable to Joe Smith. He Introduced himself aa Smith. When payment was refused Landgrave, or Smith, asked Just what he ehould do to have the check made payable. A. I Puller, cashier of the Ralner Bank, promptly told him Just what sort of a telegram would be required from New Mexico. Tha next day a faked telegram, ap parently from the Demlng bank and re questing payment to Smith, arrived at the bank at Rainier. A few hours later Lemrticrave. or Smith, appeared and the check for 1500 was paid. It now develops that the faked telegram was sent from the railroad telegraph office at Scappooae, where Landgrave was employed. The next day Landgrave left with his wife for his old home In Indiana. About a week after the cashing of the check the Rainier bank telegraphed the nana or iteming to ascertain why the money had not arrived to cover the check and tha reply waa that no such message had been sent. At first It waa thought to be a esse of wire-tapping but Investigation soon led to the abandonment of this theory. It waa found that the message had not been relayed from Portland. which would have happened had It really come irom i-eming. ."V aiex. Thla narrowed the field of Investigation. . It required little further work to aettle upon Landgrave as the guilty man. Landgrave la said to have told peo ple In Scappoose that he had been to Ft.
