A mere youth, pleaded guilty In the Municipal Court yesterday to stealing a pair of field-glasses from a Japanese. He was sentenced to serv 1S0 days. Whit said he could not help stealing sine he became addicted to the us of th drag, and when asked by th court, said he obtained supplies from Miller, bat not recently. Miller was convicted last year of selling cecal no to a large, number of young boy and was sen tenced to the rorkplle. He appealed to the Circuit Court, where the conviction was sustained. Two new m-ton auto-trucks for oil ing streets, another street flusher. and covers for the 17 street sweeper owned by th city will soon be purchased, a recommendation to this effect by Su perintendent Donaldson, of th Street Cleaning Department, being acted upon favorably by the street cleaning com mittee of the Executive Board yester day afternoon. The new auto-trucks will cost 13604 each. It Is estimated. In addition to the cost of the tanks and sprinklers. Cofran, well known as a pioneer Portland In suranc man. died at Hartford, Conn., January 15. of a stroke of apoplexy. Aa the general agent of the Hart ford Commercial Insurance Company, Mr. Cofran cam to Portland In 187t. His success caused him to be sent to San Francisco In 188S as associate gen oral agent of tb company, and three years later waa sleeted a vice-president of the company, to mi mn p"". he transferred his office to Hartford. Conn. H was born la New Hamp- ' shire, and was 63 years old. East Morrjsos Pavemejtt Repaired. The Flsher-Thorsen Company, which laid th wood-block pavement on Eaat Morrison street between Union avenue and East Water street. Is having th pavement repaired. The pavement was damaged by water from th railway crossings on East First street by break ing of th concrete- New crossings ar being Disced at this street Inter section. A solid foundation Is being built under th crossing and It Is thought that when the present repairs have been finished th pavement will be In good condition and may then be accepted by th city.
