What Is believed to be th first Instsnr of Engllh brewer buying Oregon hops di rect from growora is causing much Interest In th Portland and Salem hop trade. A. M. Lasrsnn. a Londosj brewer, who -haa been In thla Mate for several weeks, yesterday purchased a number of large lots and made bids on many more. As Mr. Lawson's brew ery Is a small one. It Is surmised be Is buying for his friends, or possibly for a syndicate Of brewers. Th Lawaon purchases Included the Wal ker brothers' crop of 491 bales snd the Sloper Fatten crop of 197 bales at Inde pendence, and the J. 8. Cooper crop of 118 balea at Corvallls. These wer all taken at 48 eents. Lawson Is reported to have bid this price for other lots aggregating 1006 bales In tb Indepandenee section, but could not gat them. It Is said his pur chases to data hav been In excess of 1500 bales, and Included, among others, the big Lee Msglnn lot at Salem. The fact that there Is a nsw export buyer In th market means thst much more com petition tor the small quantity of Oregon hops remaining. It Is also a strong Indica tion when the English consumers adopt this method of securing supplies. Klsber. Wolf A Netter were heavy buyers yesterday In Oregon and In Western Wash ington. They secured about TOO bales at 40 to 41 H cents. MeXeff Bros, bought 1M bsles of Taki mss from Lor Deo, and another lot of ISO balea both at 40 cents. E. C Klrkpatrlck paid 41 u, cents to T. A.
