MENACING BLAZE STOPPED leaking- Ca Main Results in Explo sion on East 6lde. The detonation of the gas blew loose planks and dirt about, but did no extensive damage. The vicinity of the explosion Is cov ered with wooden construction and ruhhlsh f all kinds and presented an Inviting field for a conflagration, be ing within the range of a great fire which swept the East Side waterfront five years ago and cost several lives. A large main under the wooden street hnd sprung a leak and the air was charged with gas when J. II. Hober, a switchman, set down his lantern to throw a switch. As he released the light there was a puff which raised the walk, almost threw Huber off of his feet and greatly frightened him, but did him no damage. The old building known as the Cudahy ware house and Nottingham & Company's building were endangered. Fire started immediately In the rubbish, but the hose company at the flreboat station arrived quickly and extinguished it with little difficulty.
