KallroAd Officials Say That hj Employing Double Shifts, Big Viaduct Will Be Ready by November. Dssay by the American Brldgs -Company In delivering the steel to be used In th new Harriman bridge across the Willamette River In Portland, has caused work to be suspended until after Auguat L bat local officials of the railroad company promise to have the structure ready for nse not later than November 1. As soon as the needed -parts -arrive, construction can proceed with a rush and two gangs of men will be at work contlnuoualy one on the East Side and the other an the West 81de. It Is likely that they wi:i be worked day and night Eastern onlclals-of the railroad com pany have been urging the manufac turers to rush work on the structural steel, and they have promised to have all the material needed for Immediate construction on the way to Portland be fore the end of the present week. It will require approximately two weeks for It to reach Its destination. Some of the steel pieces now on the way are of Immense slxe, weighing 60 tons each. When these are placed In position the bridge soon will take form. Less than Ave per cent of the steel is in place now. Some difficulty has been experienced, too, from the failure of the various parts to arrive In proper order. They were started away from the mills In toe exact aequenoe In which they will be used here, but tn one or two In stances It has been necessary to "set out" several cars for repairs, which permitted those that were following them to arrive hers out of their turn. As tha facilities for storing the mate rial here -are limited the railroad was confronted with the problem of taking care of the parts that were not Imme diately needed. A lot of steel is on the ground now ready for use as soon as the parts that must precede It ar rive, The steel construction work Is under contract to Robert Wakefield, under the gene raj Aupervialon of tha railroad engineers. J. P. O'Brien, general man ager, predicted when work first was started that the bridge would be ready by November 1. and In spite of the de lay the engineers declare that tha date of Its 'Completion need not -be ad vanced.
