Head of Eight and Power Depart ment of Traction Company Foresee Big Clinnge. That tha cities of tha fnlted States will be using electric heat In all their skyscrapers within the next few years la the opinion of O. R. Coldwell. gen eral auperlntendent of the llrtit and power department of the Portland Railway. Light Power Company, who returned from- a seven weeks- trip to New York yesterday. Mr. Coldwell at tended tha annual meeting of the Na tional Electric Lighting Association. In New Tork City. Portland waa a can didate for the next rendeivous of tha association, but Seattle won tha plum. It waa agreed, however, that tha dele gates would visit Portland on their way to Seattle In ,ltlS. "I round a great deal of Interest being taken In tha East In producing electric beat for large buildings and for residences, as well aa hotel kitch ens." aald Mr. Coldwell "Denver al ready hae a hotel which Is equipped for electric beating, and It la proving to be a success. In Chicago I found all of tha large hotels now In tha pro eesa of construction being equipped not only for electrlo cooking, but so built that. If It la desired to Install electric beat. It can be accomplished at small cost. I am firmly convinced that In a tew yeare the coal wagon will ba a thing of the past. The rapid development of electrlo apparatus for household and manufac turing use la almply wonderful, and this application of power will do mora to build cltlea than any other factor In our modern Ufa. -Portland alande la an enviable po sition In thla respect, and Oregon haa a future In front of It that la the won der of the electrical world. Conditions In the East are what might be called dulL I noted this In tha train coming West. The train waa on time at every station, lo ordering goo tie from fac tories some tf them offered to deliver them ahead of time, and I found this to bo true In a meaaura with many concerns. I am Inclined to take tha view that business conditions are on the mend, and while dull, they might ba due to the eeaaon. -Wherever I was everybody Inquired about Portland. Tha Rosa restlval everybody knows about It Is com ii. rated upon, and ail ask bow It I bandied. Portland, ao far aa I am able to jusge. la a favorite In tha East. Everybody thinks that wo have a good time. "Down In Arlsona where they built the Roosevelt dam there la a wonderful amount of development going on In electric heating. The power Ilea dor mant In tha Winter and pumping Is not necessary for tha land to ba Irri gated. Already plana are under way to create appilanrea which will use tha energy now going to waste. It la along thla line that I expect Oregon to develop to a remarkable extent.- DEDICATION MUST WAIT Portland Christian Scientists Will 1rt Clear Church of Debt.
