11 TIIE 3rORXIXG OREGOXIAX. 3IOXDAY, MAT 8, 1911. FIRST CATCH LIGHT Opening of Salmon Season at Astoria Disappoints. WEATHER CONDITIONS BAD Old-timer, However, Predict Boi ler Year for Glllnetteri Price Paid for Canning Fish Tllgh er Than In PaM. AJTORtA. Or.. May 7. Sprll. Thsj Crt vt'k of the Spring Mlfion flshiiia; .aon closed at o'clock last night and o far as the catch on the Jow.r river la concerned It was a dl appointment. although probably no worse than has been the renin week In many previous seasons. This was due no doubt to the continued cold weather and the unfavorable tides. On the opening day, the amount of gear In the river was much larger than at the corresponding day for several years. A a result, the canneries and cold stor age plants have been operating only a fw hours every other day. This comJftion I not considered as a criterion that the season will be a fall ore and some .of the old-time fisher men, who have followed their calling on ths Columbia River during numer ous seasons, prophecy that the season will be one of the best In many years so far as the glllnetters are concerned. They base this opinion on the fact that the weather had been so cold during the Spring that few of what might be termed the April and Slay fish have come In and that, when they do arrive, the ttr In the river la hound to be mu'ldy as a result of the expected freshet, and this will enable the glll netters to make drifts both night and da. Notwtthstandina- the small catch thus far. some of the alllnetters have, thanks to the high prices paid for the raw fish, made more than wages during this week, and while the gale which pre vailed for about three days, kept many of them Inslile. all will be out again so soon as the weather conditions become more favorable. Hetter tides will pre vail d trlng the coming week and. as a result, larger catches are looked for. The salmon fisheries of the Columbia TUver have long been looked urn as one of the principal Industries of the rate. The output amounts to fully 11.000. nno a year, and not less than Il.001.0ii0 Is dlstr!bn?ed In this vicinity annually for labor among those directly em ployed In some branch of the fisheries. Thus. It win be e-n that the runs of fish are of more than ordinary Interest lorally. for upon them depend, to a con siderable extent, the commercial ac tivity of the community. This year a peculiar condition exists. While the canned salmon market Is absolutely bare and the demand Is al most unlimited with the Indications that the selling price will bn fully 10 cents a dozen higher than last year, the market for sweet pickled, or what Is usually trrmed cold storage fish. Is glutted and many tierces of last year's park are s'lll on hand. AccorJIncly the price paid f-r the small, or cannery fish, has been fixed at cents a pound. H cent higher than last year, while the rate for the larger, or cold storage fish. Is fixed at ?H cents a pound, the same rate as prevailed last season. PROJECT WOULD BE COSTLY nutter Crwk Karmers Aak Water He Brought From John Day. PENDLETO.V. Or.. May T. (Special.) Insisting that the value of the land which will be Inundated and ruined by the establishment of the reservoir as planned for the reclamation of the 70.000 acres of land tinder the proposed West T'matllla project, will make the reclama tion of that land prohibitive, farmers In the Butter Creek bottoms are advocating the bringing of water from the John Day TUver. The scheme Is not a Dew one. as It has been under consideration by pri vate Interests for nnn time and the, farmers owning the land, which other wise will be destroyed, will endeavor to convince the Heclamatlon Service offi cials that tfte John IJay plan Is the bet ter, cheaper and more feasible. According to Attorney A. W. Gray, of Ftanfleld. who Is In theclty today, there are S90 acres of good agricultural land In the famous Butter Creek bottoms which will be Inundated If the Govern ment goes ahead with Its present plans for building a dam across the Umatilla River. Just below the mouth of Putter Creek. He says much of this land Is now paying S per cent Interest or better, on a valuation of ISuO per acre. At this rate It Is estimated that the reservoir site alone mlil ost the Government JJ.rtOO.OOO. Thia expense will of necessity be taxed up against the land to be reclaimed and must be paid by the settlers under the project. On the other hand, the farmers who Insist they are not fighting the project, but are merely tryin to find a substi tute plan for securing water for Its reclamation. Insist that the John Day plan Is by far the more feasible. They say It mill not only save one of the finest bodies of aaricuitural land In the State of Oregon from destruction, but that It will cost less. Army Engineer for Cook Bay. M.R.HFIELP. Or, May 7.
