Corrmiltteo Named) to Ask Council Not to Grant License for Coun cil Crest Pavilion. Residents of Portland Heights are strenuously opposed to the holding of public dances on Council Crest. Hear Ins; that A. Huchamp had applied to the City Council tor a license to noia dances at tha Crest pavilion, a meeting was held last night to plan opposition to the granting of tha license. Tha meeting was held at the Portland Heights Club. Those present thought tha matter ought to bo taken up at once with the members of the City Council, leaving .no ground for Mr. Durhamp to complain that he had ex pended a large amount of money and that It was not Just to take bis license away. A committee of five was accordingly appointed, whose duty It will be to wait upon the Councllmea and Induce them to vote against tha granting; of th license. Th member of the commit tee are George C. Flandera. Charles J. Schnabel. J. A. Curry. George W. Hoyt and M. C. Bantteld. Th salaries of the Assistant Fire Chief and of the three Battalion Chiefs in the fire department were in creased J-5 each. The assistant now re ceiving- J1T6 will receive $200 and tha others are Increased from 150 to Mayor Simon appeared before the com mittee to explain th crematory situa tion with regard to the estimate for March. The committee had called atten tion at Its last session to what was regarded as a very high estimate of S4800 for the operation of the Incinerator. The Mayor showed that the Board of Health, at Its last session, cut this esti mate down to J2760. as the larger amount waa found to be unnecessary because of the shutting down of the old Incinerator. Only tha new plant Is now being run. and the cost of destroying the garbage Is decreasing materially every month. It was shown by the Mayor. Councilman Ruahllght criticised tha crematory, saying he felt the city was paying for too much building and too little Incinerator. Tha Mayor said there might be som force In the criticism, but b felt that tha company ahould b given full opportunity to demonstrate whether tha plant Is a first-class on.
