Trading developed no well-defined trend on the stock exobsnge today until the afternoon session, when there was a brisk upward movement. Throuchout tbe remainder of the session the market showed decided strength. Gains were well maintained to the close, which was firm at a level wall above tbe final prices of last week. Railroad Issues were especially strong and in this connection much emphasis was placed on December reports of a number of the largest ystms. The Hill and Har riman atocks were particularly strong and active, and Reading, St. Paul. Lehigh Val ley and New York Central all responded to the upward movement. Northern Pacific's December returns were conspicuously favorable with an increase of net Income of 184,000 and In operating rv nu of 3044,000. Union Pacific showed an lr.creae of 3379.000 in net lnoome for December and Southern Pacific, an Increase of 38000 for the same month. Although the gain for Southern pacific was ouly nominal, its show ing waa encouraging in view of the fact that for the half of the year there wa a decrease in net Income of 31.640.000. United Statea Steel wa under pressure during the morning, as were others of the active issues, but recovered later and crossed 79. Forecasts of tomorrow's quar terly report of the Steel corporation con tain the prediction that earnlntrs for the last quarter of 1910 will prove to hnve been less than t'lO.OOO.OOO and that December earnings may have fallen below 38, 000,000. Copper shares, which have been shrinking; In value under the unfavorable Influence of trade reports, were stronger. Amalga mated Copper advanced a point.
