Washington Officials Pass Resolu tions and Vote to Meet In Walla Walla Next Year. VANCOUVER. Wash., Jan. 18. (Spe cial.) Walla Walla was chosen for the next meeting; place for the convention of the State Association of County Commissioners, and the time will be the second Tuesday In November. The following officers were elected by the association: President, Mark Whitlaw, of Whitman: vice-president, A. L. Will hlte, of Snohomish; secretary, J. C. Han sen, of Clallam. A legislative committee to visit the Legislature and exert influence to have certain laws passed waa appointed as follows: M. L. Hamilton, of King; T. Peterson, of Pierce; W. J. Thompson, of Skagit; Mark Whitlaw, of Whitman, and A. M. Blaker. of Clark. This com mittee will go at once to Olympla with the resolutions and recommendations to work for good roads. Bach commis sioner pledged himself to write to his representative In the Legislature, ask ing his influence. The members of the convention to day visited the State Schools for the Deaf and Blind. The convention will petition the Leg islature to repeal the law requiring the County Engineer to be elected, and sub stitute one giving this appointive power to the Commissioners In the different counties. The association will ask the uncondi tional repeal of the Btate aid road law, declaring it an expensive luxury to the taxpayers; for a law providing for the election of commissioners for six-year terms; for the repeal of the law pro hibiting commissioners from expending more than J160 on one road job, other than by contract: extending the power to the State . Kallread Commission to have authority over grade crossings by which the Commission will have power to require a separation, eliminating or safeguarding crossings. The convention favored a law fixing the salaries of the Commissioners $4000 for counties of the first-class, down to $800 In the lowest class. The meeting throughout was harmonious, enthusiastic, and all present were glad they came. Numerous votes of thanks were extended. The Commissioners left on late, trains today. A number who live In the vicinity of Seattle and Ta coma were on No. S34, which was de layed for hours by a landslide on the Northern Pacific 15 miles north of Vancouver. BAKER COMMITTEE ELATED City Will Put Fortli Claim as Site for Asylum if Change Is Made, 4 BAKKR, Or.. Jan. 18. (Special.) The committee appointed by the Baker Commercial Club is highly elated over the prospects of the site selected by Bowerman being rejected by the Gov ernor and state board. The people of this city have been strongly of the opinion that a square deal was not given in the selection, and have re ceived offers from La Grande and Union to fight the case. The Commer mercial Club of Union has offered to assist the Baker committee Jn having the matter decided upon merit. Baker will lay particular stress upon the opening of the great Harney Val ley, which will make Baker the most central point for all of Eastern Oregon, All arguments will be prepared In con venient form and be ready for submis sion to the board at the proper time. BROTHERS ARE SUSPECTED t Sandy Residents Held on Charge of Robbing Store. OREGON CITT. Or.. Jan. 18. (Spe cial.) E. W. and II. M. Keller, of Sandy, were brought here today from Portland, where they were arrested on a charge of larceny. It is said they operated a 'restaurant and late in De cember packed up the silverware, which waa rented, and after robbing a store belonging to George Ketch, left for Portland. Part of the property was found in the rooms occupied by the men. E. W. Keller admits participation in the af fair and he was bound over to the grand jury.
