Much good placer dirt la left, but can not be worked profitably, under present conditions. Experiments are now being mad In Alaska, to find an conomlcai method. Production of .other minerals Is Increasing, but rapid development Is hampered by the high cost of fuel and th fact that coal mines are not being opened. There ar now 13 gold lodes operated In Alaska. 'CARTHY WANTS PROBE SAX FRANCISCO MAYOR ASKS TO BE INVESTIGATED. Grand Jury Requested to Ascertain Truth of I U-porta That He Accepted Bis; Bribes. SAN FRANCISCO. Dec 10. (Special.) At its session last night the grand jury considered another letter which it had received frtftn Mayor McCarthy, Insist ing that he be Investigated concerning the rumors of his having accepted bribes. After some discussion th matter was shelved by a reference to the standing committee of that body of the Mayor's office. This, the second com munication of McCarthy's, refers to th fact that his previous call to action had received scant attention, the reason of fered being that th grand jury did not Investigate chance rumors. McCarthy, attempts to our this de fect In his ' petition by specifically charging that the last-named person In the list previously furnished made a statement that he had accepted bribes of 160.000 and f 100.000. In the Mayor's letter of November he gmv th names of Colonel George 1L Plppy. John Rothschild. Thornwall Mul Ully. William M. Abbott, Leon Llebes and Luther Frown, all prominent busi ness men of th city. When ques tioned after the publication of the let ter to th grand Jury, all these denied having mad any such statements as sen attributed to them by th Mayor. At a meeting of th Commercial Club this evening a committee was appoint ed to take charge on behalf of the club of the matter of the control of th situation with reference to th ap pearance of typhoid fever In th city. Th committee consists of Drs. F. W. Prentice. George Wall. J. W. Harris. Wllllsm Kuykendall. F. M. Walllns, W. W. Calklna. S. H. Friendly, F. G. Young and J. M. Williams. It Is th unanimous opinion of th physicians on th committee thst th new filter plant, now nearly completed, will, when finished, b a guarantee against any futur epidemic of typhoid, but that until th filter plant be com pleted it will be advisable to take strict measures to prevent further spread of tna dlsesse. TERMS ARE NEGOTIATED International Commission Is Plan Which Knapp and Mabio Propose to Reimlate Commerce Which Crosses the Boundary. WASHINGTON. tec. 80. An Interna tional railway commission with super visory authority over railroad operating; between the United States and Canada practically is assured. , After long negotiations between tne United States and Canada, a conclusion was readied that, in the course of a few months, renulatory authority would be extended over railway operation between the two countries. Martin A. Knapp, chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission, and J. H. Mable, chief of the railway commis sion of Canada, have been in conference for several days and reported an agree ment last Wednesday. They called at the Department of State today and presented their Joint report. Th text thereof Is not available. it la known, however, that tney nave aa-reed on an international railway com- mteslon which shall have supervisory au thority over railway lines doing an In ternational business between the two countries. This is to extend to the regu lation of freight and passenger rates and also to through routes and joint rates nd through bills of lading from points in one country to points In th other. It was finally decided to recommend that the arrange ment between the two countries should be concluded by treaty rather than by Joint legislation. COUGHLIN' DIES IN EXILE One of Cronln's Accused Mordcrers Passes in Honduras. '. CHICAGO. Pec. 30. A special from New Orleans to the Record-Herald says: "Dan Coughlin, who was one of the principal figures in the famous Dr. Cronln murder mystery and who was wanted in Chicago on a charge of Jury-bribing, is dead in San Pedro. Homluras." . Two decades ago "Dan" OougTilln was one of the central figures in the noted Cronln case at Chicago. Dr. Cronln was murdered and his body thrown Into a sewer. Coughlin was arrested, charged with complicity In the crime, but was freed by the Illinois Supreme court. Several vears later he was indicted on a charge of bribery In a railroad dam age suit. Coughlin Ted to Honduras, but after a few years In exile returned to Mobile, Ala., where he was arrested. He escaped through legal technicalities ami returned to Honduras. SOLDIER IS IMPRISONED H. The Amerlcan Red Cross endowment commit tee appointed by President Taft has de- clded to raise $75,000 as this city's con tribution to the National endowment fund.
