Com mitting burglary in order to secure blank check, for the purpose of forging them, an unknown man with three crimes charged against him, 1 being aouglit by the police. Ha first offense was com mitted Saturday night, when he broke Into the office of rr. C. R. MrAyel. in the Dekum building, forced the lock on a desk and stole a quantity of dental gold and the dentist checkbook. Miss Anderson re mained ten days and then loft suddenly. Later her roommate discovered that iH) of her money had been taken. Detectives Day and Hyde found that Just before her departure Mis Anderson had purchased a rj hat. at a Third-streot millinery store. Forest Kitervisor Studies Fires. R. H Benedict, supervisor of the Olvmpia, National Forest of the State of Wash ington, arrived In Portland yesterday on a deta.il in connection wfth the forest fires which raged through the Cascade and adjacent ranges the past Summer. Mr. Benedict will make a study of the causes of the fire and his report Is ex pected to be. of great value to lumbering interest. It will contain suggestions for the prevention of fires and tell what ha been learned in fighting fire In the past year, and when printed will be distributed widely among the resident of both stated. Charge or Thekt Withdrawn. Find ing in hi pocket a watch which he had accused a woman of stealing. Henry Melke, a cigarmaker, yesterday afternoon withdrew a report he had previously made of the alleged theft at the city detective bureau. Melke admitted that he did not fully know what was going on at the time. He observed a woman on a streetcar, who afterward ate at a table near hi own In a reettaurantu He gave the police her description and accused her of taking the watch, valued at 175. Later he discovered that the timepiece had not been stolen at all. Max Is Wasted at Jacksosvtixe. William Mullen wa arrested early yes terday morning, at Seventh and Wash ington streets, by Deputy Sheriff Bulger and A-111 be returned to Jacksonville. Or.. where he 1 eaid to be wanted by Sheriff Jonea for the alleged obtaining of money under false pretenses. Mullen Is said to have passed a bad check. Deputy Bulger said he found a check for 1240 upon Bulger' person which Mullen sold wa signed by his father, and i cents In cash. Vin cent, of Baltimore, according to a letter received by the secretary of the Cham ber of Commerce. That the sanitary condition of many of the moving-picture houses of the city Is bad. the lighting poor and that many of the pictures shown are unfit for chil dren to see, was reported yesterday to the Associated Charities by a committee appointed by that organization. For Ave weeks the investigation progressed quiet ly, and not until yesterday was It gen erally known that Inspection of the thea ters was under way. The Investigation covered value of the pictures shown and their effect or In fluence on the people: the type of spec tators and the moral conditions sug gested through the pictures, and the mingling of the people and the sanitary conditions cleanliness, ventilation and lighting. A committee of five was appointed to prepare resolutions to bo presented to the Mayor and the Board of Health, pointing out the conditions as they exist and suggesting that something be done. The committee, which will meet Friday afternoon. Is composed of Mrs. Elmer B. Colwell. Mrs. A. C.
