WELLS AND FAMILY. rs It years with the Increase fa steam ves sa's snd dearease tn sailing snips, the deaths eaaualls due to wrasse sad outer aaauaiuae as oecrsaeea aoowt siw-iiuii Orpneum. TUT young romantlo actor William Farnura. with a supporting company of talented artists presenting; The Mallet's Masterpiece." heads an admir able bill at the Orpneum. Ths playlet, from th pen of Edward Peples, who rot also Th Princ Chap." gives Mr. Farnum Just such another role as that in which h mad his great success in "Hen Hur." Tha plot of Mr. Peples' story concerns the creation of th statue of tha "Venue d Mllo." which now stands In the Louvre (Paris), tha most perfect work of sculpture among ths treasures of the Old World's art, and regarding whose origin there has long been discussion among artists, sculptors and historians. The beautiful playlet presented by Mr. Farnum is a solving of these differences, despite th fact that th author has no authontio ground-work for hia theme. Tha story In the hands of Mr. Farnum and his distinguished assistants is a thing of great beauty and strength, a graceful and , pleasing weaving of ro mance about an ancient work of art. Mr. Farnura Is seen as Phllotlas, a sculptor who has made a beautiful image of a woman holding in her outstretched arms a aluraberlng babe, and which is to be entered into competition for a great prize offered by King Mermaldes. An added incentive to Phllotlas' work is that In winning tha prise, he wins also the rle-ht te make oublic his betrothal to Adonla, tha King's daughter. A rival sculptor, who. too. loves Adonla, breaks with a mallet the masterpiece, while Phllotlas and Adonla are keeping tryst In tha garden. A lost buckle betrays ths culprit, and ther is a tremendous scene between th two rlvala. Then, when the anger and sorrow of Phllotlas have calmed and ha ran look again on tne havoo wrought, he finds the Venus de Milo a statue more beautiful than be fore, a masterpiece, truly. In Mr. Farnum'e Impersonation of the afulotor. ail the conceptions of artist and actor are met. His Is a clear-out portrayal: with tha. Imprint of power and dramatic vigor. Wells ,n.nlbloe. as Vaata. tha rlvsL la an actor of ability. and Olive White, as Adonla. Is not only talented but adds personal beauty ana charm to her role. The aot is staged handsomely, and th costumes are har moniously In keeping with the period. Next lt interest are the Meredith sis ters. Pearls and Carrie, whose dusky. Oriental types of beauty are shown forth In a generous series of songs. As In dian maids. Japanese and Egyptian dam sels in slaloms robes. Dixie girls In hoops and frills. Quaker maidens, demur In gray, again as Eskimos and. yet again as Dutch frauleins. these two send a lot of real entertainment over the foot lights, and it's nine, clean, pleasant en tertainment, too. Wheeler Earl and Vera Curtis, a nat ty, nice-looking twain sins; and gossip, and scatter large cheer In tbelr skit called "Innocenta Abroad." And therea th Duffln-Redoay Troup who offer an original and thrilling ac robatic act. Including among their many meritorious feat, a trtpl somersault, a double full twister and a loop-the-loop. In which on adventuresome athlet swings his body through space In a circle and grasps again th supporting hands of th man on th bar. Th Kauffman Brothers ar a black face, musical duo, whose chief claim to consideration la a travesty on grand op era selections, without which their num ber would suffer, for It's mostly noise loud, reverberating noise and much of It. Interspersed with lnan laughtat and horse play. Th Beixars ar conjurers, whose en tertaining. If baldly apparent, (at times) magic makes a diverting and edifying opening act. Than there is. also, on th bill "Radi ant Radl Furman. aa English com edienne (alleged), and Who is about aa "radiant" as a piece of coal. Radl sings In a vole that sounds Ilk th elevator going up, and Insists on taking herself seriously. On little character song she get over all right, because she cari catures herself, but Radla In serious garb, and (worse luck) In the "aojer" togs. Is a mistake. Aa usual, ths orchestra was there with much music. In fact, five regular number ar Included in tbelr pro gramme. Grand. THOUGH not so good as last week's, th bill at th Grand Theater la deserving of much praise and small blame. As every vaudeville show must have Its tonllner. the honor falls ts Llnd. th marvelous female Impersonator. In excellent costume and with th grace and ease of th experienced toe dancer. he caotlvates and deludes his audience when he appears as a French music hall artiste and executes clevor Inter pretations of the five senses In dance. Not only does Lind Interest the theater-goers, but every feature has Its a-ood oolDts. Flo Alder, who Is assist ed by two small boys from the boxes, sings a number of old stand-by songs which never lose tbelr popularity, me thins; which really counts in a song act, the voice; Is not missing. Both small boys and Mies Alder herself hay pleasing and true tonea which blend to good advantage. . . The opening feature of the bill Is In teresting and rather out of the ordi nary. MeNamee, clad In white flan nels and looking eool and comfortable, steps nattily upon the stage and In forms those waiting for his 'contribu tion to the afternoon's entertainment that ha will mold for them an Ameri can Indian, which he does with clay, and right well. too. His other sub jects, including the poet Shakespeare and our friend, "Happy Hooligan," he handles with skllL playlet provides a diversion from the higgledy-piggledy trio which Just precedes, in which Johnson. Davenport and Lodello, In the guise of college ath letea and a farmer, have as much fun apparently aa the audience with their rolls and tumbles and Jumps about the stage. However, "back to the owl." the playlet represents "the morning after," when Ben Steal, a stage manager, awakes to find himself clad in feminine xarh and minus his watch and also with a headache, about which he thus remarks: "I started out with a roll, but returned with a bun, oh, you bak ery." And in this state his new sou brette, a stunning brunette in stun ning cjothes. finds him not exactly pre pared -for the rehearsal which takes place immediately. Pretty clothes and graceful dancing, to say naught of a fluent flow of wit, makes the short comedy a hit. John Dillon, though last to be named. Is far from least, and his mirthful mel odies pause smiles and bursts of laughter which anouia not mi let ter and that not unduly. The orches tra, too, does Its share this week and should not pass unnoticed. So, all in all, the Qrand haa a good bill. ATTORNEY HOLCOMB DIES Death Come to Portland Man After Protracted Illness.
