v V FIRELOSS MILLIONS Burned Stumpage to Be Sold at Bargain Prices. GOVERNMENT WILL HURRY Mod una and Idaho Yonet Suffer to Extent of ,000,000,000 Feet or Timber Valued at About $13,000,000. WASHINGTON. Oct. Six billion board feet o lumbar, valued at about $18,000,000. ware destroyed) la the re cent forest Cr In tha National foreU la Montana and Northern Idaho. Tho total area burned or In th! no district wu put at 1.150.000 acres. The first rough estimate of tho loss In tha district waa computed today by official of the Government Foraat tier-vice. It abowa that tha heaviest losses vera In two Idaho forests, tha Coaur d'Alene, where I.OuO.OuO board feat of timber waa killed or destroyed, and mora than 434.000 acres burned orer. and tha Clearwater, where 1.000.000.000 feet waa killed and 100.000 acrea burned over. Other heavy losaes ware Helena National forest. Montana. $00. ooo.ooo feet: cabinet forest. 400.000.000. and Lolo forest. 300.000.000 feet. How much of tha e.ooO.000.000 feet wsich was either killed or burned In Montana and Northern Idaho, can eventually bo salvaged It Is. of course. Impossible to predict. If It were all a total loss, and If Its stumpaira value were put at tha average price at which National forest timber was sold last year. It would be the equivalent of a money loss of about 115.000.000. It la believed that last Summer's tires either burned or killed between 1 and 2 per cent of tha total stand or rorest tim ber. At tha present rata of cutting from the National forests. .600.000.000 feet Is equal to II years supply, but It a laaa than one-sixth of a single year's cut la tha entire country, or enough to keep all lumber mills busy for some thing under two months. A atatement Issued today says: "Forester Graves believes that, as osually happens In tha case of big fires, there will be fonnd to be considerable areas of living Umber within tha re gions now mapped as entirely burned over. Of necessity tha figures given are tentative, for It has been Impos sible to examine all tha burned areas thoroughly. As fast as possible, however, the for est officers are locating and estimating tha bodies of timber killed but capable of being lumbered If taken In time. There will be an enormous quantity of flre-kllled timber, both on tha National forests and on private lands, to ba dls - posed of as soon as possible, since, if not marketed quickly. It will not ba worth cutting. "Tha Department of Agriculture will yusb. work vigorously tt dispose or this flre-kllled Umber. As with all other National forest Umber. It will ba aold jon tha stump to mlllmea who will lam. ber the land, paying- a set price for each thousand board feet for tha tim ber, and conforming to whatever regu latlons are stipulated In tha Intereat of tha forest. "Generally speaking. Secretary TVU on does net regard It as a wise policy to aell off tha National forest Umber unless It Is In reasonably good de mand, for tha country la aura to need the aupply badly later on. But with tha flre-kllled timber It la a case of now or never. Consequently there is an un usual opening for lumbermen who are ready to buy National forest stumpage at bargain price a." Fort Stevens May Lose Troop. FORT STEVENS. Or.. Oct 54. Spe cial. A new disposition of artillery forces, necessitated by tha completion or Hawaiian and Philippine Island coast fortifications. Indicates that probably one company will be taken from the Lower Columbia and will not be replaced. Aa tha new schema also calls for one cen tral post In each district. It Is generally conceded that tha Fort Columbia garri son, the Thirty-third Company, will ba the one ordered away for Insular service, not only because It Is an Isolated com pany, but also because It la one of two mining companies located In this district, hence Its withdrawal would not cripple any branch of local coast defense.
