Importation of Japanese hardwood for manufacturing, purpose In this city Is gradually Increasing, and l giving promise of materially aiding the local manufacturing Industry. A large shipment of this lumber arrived yesterday on the Japanese steamer Tamon Maru. No. . and the work of discharging will begin this morning at the docks of the Pacific Lumber Manufacturing Company. The Importation of teak wood from Japan Into this port between January 1 an.l October 1 of this year amounted to :S11.0 Teet. ar.d the cargo of the Tamon Maru will materially swell the amount received for the year and make It far In excess of that Imported Inst year. The amount Imported last year between January 1 and October 1 was Lotl.SM feet. The amount of hardwood In board measure brought here yesterday on the Tamon Maru No. could not be definitely learned yesterday from the Japanese officer of the vessel, who slmr'y explained that they had a total of 333? pieces of hardwood timber on board. Wood thus shipped Into this country does net come in the t $-n of lumber, but Is In the log and must be sawed and manufactured here. It Is said that It Is less expensive to saw the lumber here than In Japan, while the duties on the sawed article are much more than on the raw material shipped In the logs. Hardwood formed a'.I of the cargo of the Tamon Maru. After the vessel his been discharged she will be loaded with local lumber for transportation to tha Orient. The Tamon Marti left Otaru. Japan, on September 27. and arrived here at 11: J o'clock yesterday morning. She Is not on'.y manned by Japanese, but all her officers are of the same nationality. She was originally an Kngltsn vessel, and later flew the German flag. before Japanese Interests purchased her. She l commanded by Captain Nakyma. The Tamon Maru jia enjoyed good weather ail the way to Portland and her trip was without exclUng InciJonts. IUtXORD JLOtnEIt CAKGO GOES Knight r.f the Garter Delayed on Ac count of I'og.
