The dally maxket 1 unsettled and an un certain tone prevail. Our pedal agent at Chic air o wired ua thta morning; that Chl caffo dealers all laying down." There la a considerable trap between the grow era Ideas and prices which the buyers are witl ing to pay. and there seems to be a. very general Idea on the part of the trade that there la a very large crop of fruit In the Northwest which will have to be moved, and that prices will be lower. This re sults In very cautious trading. The wise policy, w believe, mould be to consider all conditions, and put a price on the fruit which will Induce sufficient buying demand to- take care of the offerings with out congestion at any time. Meanwhile, we are doing everything possible to sup port the market and keep It In healthy condition. We quote hereunder a report received from our special agent at New Tork: "It Is very difficult to get anr of the buyer hereabouts enthused otct boxed ap ples at anything above very re a or able price. The dock and auction market here tn the last day or two haa shown de cidedly weaker, with lower prices. There are quite a number of cars now rolling this way, which the trade thoroughly un derstand, and they are simply waiting to see what Is going to happen, and In the meantime, buy from day to day their re quirements, and there Is practically no speculative feeling. If yon could be here personally, and go on the street and Into the offices of the trade vho deal largely In thia line of fruit, you would certainly realise the foregoing facts. The general trade have a pretty good knowledge .of the extent of the crop In the Northwest and West, through the trade papers and various other sources. They have been given to understand thst there I a very large crop, and a good many of them having been burnt on apples pretty severely In the last few seasons, most dealers are Inclined to be very cautious. They are not going to take hold until prices get down to a rea sonable working basis. We think the quick er the ehlppera and dealers in th West and Northwest realise this, the better for all concerned. There are a good many apples In some of the Eastern' states, snd no one Is going hungry. The trade Is be ing well supplied with nearby fruit at moderate prices. They are only taking a limited Quantity of fancy box fruit at high prices. They know that there la a good slied quantity of this fruit to more, and thev feel certain that a large portion nf t will roll this waf regardless of everything. Furthermore there Is bound to be a liberal quantity of box fruit of fered on the docks here, which Is going to make f. o. U selling more difficult." STOCKS ARE HELD STEADY Wall Street Satisfied With the Check Given to the Advance Revolu- . tion in Portugal Has No Effect on Market. NEW TORK. Oct. 5. Tbe selllnc of stocks, which turned prices downward to day, represented In part a feeAie; of con tentment over the extent of the advance al ready achieved and th. profit, accrued and In part a misgiving over the adequacy of forces to accomplish further advances. Evi dences that the newly awakened demand for ronds .'as belnr harmed by tbe action of tbe stock market was a potent .factor In checking the organized efforts to further the rtse in stocks. Light Is thrown upon th. revival In the bond market, as well as on the events that preceded It. by the atatlstlcs of new capi tal Issue which have been made up by the Journal of Commerce. For the- third quar ter of the present year Just ended, the com pilation shows new Issues of a par value of SlB4.4i3.O0O. This compares with $417,147. 000 In the second quarter and $.13,282,000 In th. first quarter, making an aggregate for the first half year far beyond any prece dent In tha history of tha New York money market. .Dealers in the bonds have come to the underwriters to replenish their supplies and savings banks and Investment Institutions have become buyers. This helpful- process haa gone to the root of the recent difficul ties and the most favorable auguries are drawn from IU At the same time, it la reeolIected that the difficulty grew partly out of last year", excesses In stock market speculation at a time when more substantial requirements for capital remained to be supplied, and bank era deprecate a new movement likely to re peat that mistake. The fear that a pre mature revival In the stock market will Interfere with the orderly readjustment of the needed financing by bond Issues haa an Influence In restraining the stock maTket. The revolution in Portugal was of minor effect on the day'a market. Rfo No. Best Grade Lump Coal ,n,nssssssnsssssss.nsssssnnssssisssjssnsnsnn $5.50 Per Ton Delivered to Your -Address in Portland A few days ago the Pacific Coal & Gas Company advertised that they would sell 900 tons of their BESl GRADE LUMP COAL AT $5.50 PER TON, DELIVERED IN PORTLAND, FOR ADVERTIS ING PURPOSES ONLY, stating also that check or cash must accompany each order, and that ONLY TWO TONS WOULD BE SOLD TO EACH CUSTOMER AT THAT PRICE. We now wish to announce that we have sold 810 tons out of the 900 we agreed to sell at that price. We are making our deliveries to those who have or dered the coal, and a great many of them have voluntarily called at this office, or telephoned, that they were exceedingly well pleased with the quality of the coal. If you wish to take advantage of two tons of the remaining amount, you will, naturally, have to act at once, and please remember that we will only sell two tons to each customer, and that the CHECK OR CASH MUST INVARIABLY ACCOMPANY EACH ORDER, for the reason that we are selling this coal at what it costs us to mine and deliver it to yon. We have oat own mines and are merely advertising with this lot of 900 tons that we may very quickly get 450 coal users in Portland. We know that when you once use this coal you will continue to do so, and please remember that we will always be under the other fellow's price on the best grade lump coal. If you will call at our offices we shall be glad to show you samples of the coal, together with some letters from those who are now using our coal in Portland.
