This wk the Krocfrrt denuind Yi- come from the Houth. Tbe dealers In California seem anxious to rt the marketa In Orron and Washing ton at a high lerel. Their purpose la prob ably to force the Northern trade to load up beavlly on costly wheat. In order that they can slip In themselves at a later date when prices are lower. The ateadr downward tendency of the Eastern marketa and the declines abroad furnish grounds for the predictions of local dealera that prices tn the Pacific Northwest cannot be much longer maintained. Only one or two of the large burera have been operating at the extreme price, the others holding; back for what they consider an In evitable decline. It is estimated that not to exceed 20000 bushels of wheat have changed bands since the first new crop sale. A moderate degree of Interest la shown tn tbe coarse grains and spot prlres are uncharged. Bears Kind Difficulty In Covering Their Sales Protective Meas ures Against Raids. 'NEW YORK. Aur. 2. The stock market today as largely .n affair of profealonal trader, and their vl.w. of the speculative outlook aeemed t Chang, from hour to hour. Judging by th. continual fluctuatlona of price a. Th. movement of eome specula tive stock gave warning that th. bear party had been at work during th. last few days. Ther. Is no on. subject at pre nt to which no much Importance la at tached aa the year'e agricultural harvests. and th. market showed a real response to th. more hopeful turn of th. day a newa in that respect. Early depression waa trans formed Into a buoyant and active closing. Th. Government report on cotton con liilon a of July 23 waa the foremost InflU' enc. In shaping judgment of the agricultural outlook. .Th. condition figures, showing heavy deterioration during the month and a poor comparlaoti with the average in a number of year, doe. not otter greai in spiration or enthusiasm when considered absolutely. The speculative element con sidered It. not from that standpoint, but relatively. In that light It was no tone than expected and better than soma of th. preliminary estimates, notably that of the National Dinners' Association. There were report of cloudy weather In Texas, wher. the trouble 1 with the droutn ramer man exoeaalv. moisture. The drouth-stricken nortlon of the corn belt were reported to have been visited by -abundant and soaking rains." and ther. was heavy selling 01 tnai commodity on the exchanges to bear out the reoorta. The cheerful tenor of those advices strengthened the reslstence which stock had begun to show to th. depression of the early part of th. day. The depression ceniereu on the Hawley group, to the accompaniment of nredlctlona that the dividend on Chesa- pcake 4 Ohio could not be maintained and that the ambltioua project 01 onuiii. centering around that property were becom ing Involved In embarrassments similar to those which overcame the Pearson syndi cate. There appeared a demand for the stock that waa not felt yesterday during it. ahara fall and the bear found tne sup ply small when they began to bid for It to cover their ehorts. Thl put a new face on the maiier. an. .hb peake A Ohio and a similar rebound on Slos-Shef field Steel served aa a warning that protective measurea against bear raids were In force. A aharn redaction In the London visible supply of copper, reports of Improving de mand for thit metal and reiteration of aa- sertiona that a policy of curtailed output had been entered upon by the principal pro ducers served to strengthen th. copper In duatrlala. New orders for ateel products and speci fication on contracta were eald to aatiafy the Idea, of authorities In that trade. The over-extended bears In the market were put fairly to rout before th. end of the day. and the active Hat showed gains .11 the way from one to four points. , Bonds were Irregular. WASHINGTON. Aug. 2. High tempera tures, much sunshine and little rain over most of the great agricultural districts of. the country marked the week's weather, according to the National Weekly Weather Bulletin, Issued todayi by the Weather Bureau. It says: "In the Western portion of the corn belt. including Oklahoma. Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota, exceedingly high tempera tures, with hot. dry southerly winds prevail ing much of the week, greatly intensified drouth conditions previously existing In many portions of those state. High temperature also prevailed over Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas, but some good showers occurred and conditions were greatly favorable, al though rain is now needed In many portions of Iowa and Missouri. "Over the great ranges of the West, hot weather continued, and although some rains occurred, the amounts generally were too small to afford any permanent relief, except in Arizona and small portion of the adjoin ing states, where the 'usual Summer rains have proved very beneficial. In the Irrigated districts of the West the weather has continued favorable for the agricultural and fruit Interests, although water is generally becoming scarce In Cali fornia and is getting low in other districts.
