'THE- - OREG GALA'S f - TUESD-AYr JULY 12, 1910. 13 TENNIS TROPHY OFFERED J?ORTLAXDERS WOULD EXCOUR. AGE GAME IX XORTHWEST, Xbree Members of Irvington 'Club Announce Donation of Hand ' - some Sil-ver Prize - . Following the return to this city of the Portland tennis cracks who took part in the-lay at Spokane in. the International andl Inland, Empire .tournaments,' if Was Riven out yesterday that L. MV' and C. D. tarr and Captain J. J- Reynolds, members of the Irvington Tennis Club, of this city, are the donors of a hand eome silver trophy to be played for in open competition in what wiU be known as the Jnterclub tournament. This interclub play will include the plght clubs now members of the North Pacific Tennis Association, viz., Multno mah and Irvinglon, of this city: Spokane. Everett, Wash., Victoria and Vancouver, B. C. Seattle and Tacoma. Though the donors of the trophy have not yet definitely settled all rules and regulations affecting the play, in general it is probable that play, in each instance, shall -require two weeks' notice,, or chal lenge with, the holding" club, and not less than two men must be entered, the play thus requiring five matches in all, four in singles and one in .doubles to take the cup from the holder. It is probable that since the donors are members of the Irvlngton Club that the trophy will be given- the local organiza tion as the first defender, and it is be lieved that Everett will be the first chal lenger, the play for which may be held on the Irvlngton courts following the Oregon state tournament at the Multno mah Club this -month. It is required that the club holding the greatest number of victories at the end of three years shall be declared the per manent' holder- of- the - beautiful trophy soon to be displayed in this - city. . The announcement of this innovation in North Pacific tennis circles, brought out for the purpose of creating further enthusiasm in the sport in this section of the country and toward bringing to gether In a spirit of good fellowship all the best players of the various clubs, making up the North Pacific Tennis As sociation, caused a happy surprise in tennis circles here last night. In speaking of the announcement made yesterday, F. H. V. Andrews, . president of the North' Pacific Tennis Association, Bald: "The plan Is one of the best that could 3iave 'been .proposed, to-further, the Inter ests of tennis in the Northwest. It will mean bringing to Portland often the best tennis cracks of the North Pacific. The open competition will mean much and the fact that it will take three years for the permanent retention of the trophy will result In some beautiful tennis here with in that time. I cannot say too much for the generous spirit of the donors of the trophy." NO AGREEMENT IS MADE Details for Operation of Mount Cal vary Line Not Settledi, Efforts pertaining to the construc tion of the extension of the United Railways service to Mount Calvary are confined apparently to construction at present. So far as can be ascertained no definite detailed agreement has been entered into between that road and the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company for an interchange of traffic at the junction or for the city system to operate the extension. It is admitted by both President Jos Belyn, of the P. B, L. & P. Co. and President Stevens of the United Rail ways, that an understanding of a gen eral character has been reachedfor. the former " company to supply electric power, and it is stated that no diffi culties are expected in fixing the other details. President Stevens and General Man ager Wickersham. of the United Rail ways, went out over the line yesterday. Mr. Stevens has given orders that the work be pressed forward as rapidly as possible. Grading is under way at the cemetery end of the line and the other work will be opened as fast as men and equipment can be put on the ground. The route as adopted follows gen- eraniy the Barnes road- for ' about-' two miles and then connects with the Kings Heights electric line. The lat ter, in the general matter of opera tion, will be practically an extension of the city system, but the road is be ing constructed by private enterprise. It will be operated as a part of the Portland Railway, Light & Power Com pany. The franchise for the Kings Heights road is now in process of pub lication, the time limit for which will expire July 20. The City Council will probably finally approve the franchise July 27. The Mount Calvary line and the connecting link in Kings Heights .it- is.-expected, will be ready -for opera tion within 90 days and possibly in less time. Owing to details having not yet been arranged it is not known whether the Mount Calvary cars will be operated down Washington street to the heart or the city or from a transfer at the Junction point. 8 Successor to Coman Not Named. R- B. Miller, traffic manager of the Harriman lines in the Northwest, has gone to the Chicago rate conference without naming the successor of W E Coman as general freight agent. -It- Is understood that the selection of a man i?r ?,e.P ace has Deen left entirely to Mr. Miller's Judgment, but it is be lieved an announcement will not be made until he has" had an opportunity to talk oyer the situation here with Eastern officials of the road. NURSERYMEN WILL MEET Pacific Coast Convention WIU Open at Walla "Walla Tuesday. SPOKANE. Wash.. July XL (Spe cial.) The Pacific Coast nurserymen win meet at Walla Walla Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday, in annual convention. Nearly 200 prominent tree men of the Northwest are expected to be present. The Walla Walla Commercial- Club will entertain the visitors -Tuesday evening with a reception at the club-t rooms and the Commercial Club lunch eon Tuesday afternoon will be devoted to the discussion of fruit and nursery topics. On this occasion, several nurserymen will speak, including J. B. Pllklngton. of Portland: F. A. Wiggins, of Toppenish; R. Layritz, of Victoria; E. H. Shepard, of Hood River, and P. A. Dix, of Utah. The visitors will go to Milton Thurs day, morning yia the electric interur ban line, where an open-air luncheon will be served, on the return stops will be made at several of the larger orchards.
