Quick work on the part of the Port land detective force yesterday pre vented a probable appeal to the up per courts for a writ of habeas corpus In the case of George II. Townsend. an alleged forger from St. Paul. Town send was arrested here more sthan a week: ago on telegraphic advices from pt. Paul, and his case has been con tinued In police court from day to day. The Minnesota authorities have been dilatory in sending for Townsend, and it was not until last Wednesday that the officers here were notified that an officer had started from St. Paul. Deputy Sheriff Cook arrived from St. Paul Thursday night. He found that his prisoner was severely ill in St. Vincent Hospital and had intended to wait a few days until he could be moved with comfort. Learning yes terday that Townsend was beginning to clamor for action in his case and that he had sent for an attorney, the Minnesota officer secured an auto mobile and taking Townsend from his cot in the hospital, whisked him across the river to Vancouver, where further preparations for his return to the East will be made. MA1LCLERKS SEND ROSES San Francisco Banquet Table Decor ated With Portland Flowers. Portland roses will be used for decor ations at the banquet tendered tonight at San Francisco in honor of A. H. Stephens, superintendent of the eighth division railway mail service. The committee of railway mail clerks who are in charge of the affair telegraphed an appeal to their fellow workers in Portland, and stated that It was Im possible to procure the flowers needed in the vicinity of the Bay City. Upon receipt of the request the Port land mail clerks turned the telegram over to their wives, and the Shasta Limited on Thursday night carried more than 1000 buds, with the compli ments of the City of Roses. WINDOWS TO BE DEDICATED First Congregational Church Honors Memory of Dead Members. With appropriate exercises, two memorial windows will be Installed in the First Congregational Church to morrow. The south window will be a tribute to the memory of Rev. F. Eastern Clapp, and will depict scenes from the life of the Saviour. Mr. Clapp served the church for eight years, and it was due to his efforts that the new structure was erected. The window is a gift of the Ladies' Aid Society. The north window is in remembrance of Samuel Morse Smith, who was a generous contributor to the church. Special music will be rendered, and the public is Invited to attend. LOW RATES EAST.
