The new St. Clement's Church on the Lower Peninsula will be dedicated Monday, July 4, by Archbishop Alexander Christie. The ceremony will begin at 10 A. M. with a procession from the paro chial residence. After the dedication solemn pontificate mass will be cele brated by Monsignor James Rauw, vicar general. Rev. Father Kettenhofer Is the pastor. The new parish buildings con sist of a chapel and school under one roof and a parochial residence costing $13,000. The Sisters of St. Francis, of Mil waukee, Wis., will have charge of the school. Aged Man Loses J3000.T. F. Hughes, an aged citizen living at 2014 East Glisan street, reported at detective headquarters yesterday morning that he had lost a iwallet containing about $3000 worth of valuable papers, Including checks, notes end bonds. Hughes thinks that he lost the wallet In or about the Dekum build ing. Shortly before noon yesterday he went to the office of Dr. Hubbard in that building and is sure that he had the wallet at that time. A little later he missed it and made a thorough search in the vicinity, but was unable to find it. He offers a liberal reward for its recovery. Chinese- Fined for Abusing Officer. Xee Foo, a wealthy Chinese, was fined 10 In Police Court yesterday for using abusive language to Patrolman Hum phries. - The officer was in plain clothes and was making an investigation in Lee Foo's neighborhood on North Fourth ptreet. Lee Foo had been almost the victim of a diamond swindle a few days before and said that he thought Hum phries was an agent of Louie Jones, the negro who tried to get t60 from him for a piece of glass. He ordered the officer away and when he failed to go used insulting language. . Young Bot Almost Wrecks Train-. "vVallen Reagan, 7 years old, living on the Mount Scott carllne between Grays Ctoes ing and Rayburn, when playing on the streetcar tracks Thursday drove three large spikes into the joints of the rails. A train under charge of Conductor Gregory was almost derailed. Special Officer Lillis, In the employ of the Port land Railway, Light & Power Company, Investigated and traced th act to the Heagan child, whose parents said that they would give him a whipping and keep (him away from the track in the future. Thieves Loot Parsonage. Xo trace lias -been found of the numerous articles taken from the parsonage of the St. Paul Gerrnin Lutheran Church, East Twelfth and Clinton streets, a few nights ago. Rev. August Krause, the pastor, and wife were In the church alongside the parsonage, while the burglars were at work. A watch, several pieces of jewelry and some cash were taken, the loss being something over 1100. A num ber of presents from friends in Europe were taken. Denver Man Sees Exhibit. For the purpose of familiarizing himself with the Portland Chamber of Commerce ex hibits of Oregon products. Z. Charles Ke-lt, of the Denver Chamber of Com merce, is in Portland. Mr. Felt arrived yesterday, with a letter of introduction to Secretary Giltner from Secretary Thorndike Deland, of Denver. Old Resident Dies. Jerry Lusich. an old resident and restaurant proprietor, died Thursday at his home, 620 E.-.s-r. Peventh street. He was born in Au?:r::i 63 years ago, and for more than 20 yeats . Jiad made his home in Portland. He con ducted restaurants on both sides of the river. The funeral will be held Sunday from the Cathedral. Japaxesb Lotteries Closed. All lot tery games conducted by Japanese at Council Crest were clord yesterday by . Patrolman Stanton, acting under orders from the Chief of Police. The officer in vestigated these games some days ago and found that four or five were running which contained an element of chance. Wife Causes Chauffeur"s Arrest. E. A. Snyder, a chauffeur who keeps a machine at Sixth and Washington streets, and Jane Doe. who Is said to be a wo man known- as "Pearl." were arrested at 165 Park street yesterday by Constable Lou Wagner, on complaint of Snyder's wife. B. M. Bibch Injured by Automobile. B. M. Bisch. a well-known resident of Milwaukie and newly elected director of the Milwaukie school district, was badly Injured while crossing the Burnside bridge on his bicycle Wednesday by an automobile which ran him down. Both eyes were blackened and he sustained many bruises, but no bones were broken. Sweet Pea Contest Today. The sweet pea contest inaugurated In the Wood stock district several weeks ago will end this afternoon at Woodstock hall, where a general display of sweet peas will be made. Four prizes will be awarded for best displays and best blooms. All who have raised sweet peas are invited to exhibit. Mrs. Eaton Will Speak. Mrs. E. G. Baton, of Portland, who has just returned from India, will give an account of her trip at the Sellwood Church of the Nazarene, 608 Tacoma avenue, tomorrow afternoon. Mrs. Eaton visited the mis sionary station in Calcutta maintained by the church. Big, old-fashioned Fourth of July cele bration at Oregon City. Free hose races, free balloon ascension, baseball game and water sports; 50 minutes from Portland, SO minute service, Theft Charge Against Chinaman's Wife Dismissed. Mrs. Wing Lee, the Swedish wife of a Chinese doctor, was given a preliminary hearing in Police Court yesterday on a charge of stealing $200 from George Lake, an Americanized Chinaman, and the case was dismissed. Lake, the complaining witness, told the court that on the occasion of a recent visit he was asked by the doctor to assist in preparing a duck for dinner. While doing so, he took off his coat and some one abstracted from it $200 in gold. He ac cused Mrs. Wing, Lee, but it was shown that numerous persons had access to the room and the woman was discharged for lack of evidence. Pastor's Wedding to Bb Remembered. The Sunday services at Epworth Metho dist Church will be unique. The 10th an niversary of the marriage of the Rev. Charles T. McPharson and wife will be celebrated with appropriate services. The Rev. W. T. Kerr will preach the anni versary sermon at 11 A. M. The evening service will be purely patriotic. The ad dress will be delivered by R. E. Lee, subject, "America Before the World." Clayton C. Wentz will sing a solo, "A Flag Without a Stain" will be sung by a mixed quartet. Speeder Fined $35. Speeding, driving an automobile without a license and in toxication were charged against Homer Reed, a youth who appeared in Police Court yestej-day morning. Reed denied being drunk but confessed that he went down Stark street at 3 o'clock yesterday morning at the rate of 14 miles an hour. He was arrested at Sixth and Stark streets by Patrolman Courtney. ' Reed admitted that he had no authority to drive a car and that he had been drink ing. He was fined $35. C hurch Will Picnic Tha First Nor wegian and Danish Methodist Episcopal Church, Eighteenth and Hoyt streets, will hold its Annual Picnic at Vernon, near the end of Alberta carline, Monday, July Fourth, and not at Mount Tabor as first announced. Those attending will bring their own lunch baskets, but coffee will be served free. A good programme has been provided and there will be amusements of various kinds. . Burolars Frightened Away. Persons supposed to be burglars made an at tempt to enter the house of George Wood, at 193 Nineteenth street, at 10 o'clock Thursday night. A large pane of glass was broken out of a door and the -door was unfastened. It Is supposed that the noise of the falling glass scared the burglars away. Poolroom Owner Fined. Despite warn ings by Patrolman Vessey to keep minors out of his poolroom, George Powers, of 267 Russell street, engaged in a game with Harry Jones, 17 years old, and was arrested by Vessey. He was fined J10 In Police Court yesterday. The boy was also arrested and sent to the Juvenile Court. Mack Stately, a striking teamster, and Charles Thompson, a strikebreaker, were arrested yesterday afternoon by Special Officer Parkinson, charged with fighting. It is alleged that Stately called Thomp son a "scab." Patrolman Overrules Phtsician. Disagreement between a police officer and a physician on a question of medi cine, ended in favor of the patrolman yesterday. Mrs. Chrisman, of 533 Web ster street, was attacked by measles on Thursday. She went to Dr. Thornton, In the Medical building and says that he told her that no quarantine would be necessary. The case came under the notice of Patrolman Teevln, who reversed the physician's decision. The quarantine is on. Alleged Horsethief Captured. Charles C. Smith, wanted by the police in Calgary, Canada, for selling a horse be longing to Gait & Co. of that place, and leaving with the money, $140, was caught by Deputy Sheriffs Ed Wood and Leonard yesterday morning, and lodged in the County Jail. He is said to have con fessed to Sheriff Stevens. Smith la said to have been a private detective. Bullet Fired Into Kitchen. Mrs. Charles Bungl, of 1071 Twenty-second street North, reported to the police Thurs day night that a bullet from a revolver had entered the kitchen of her home, tearing a hole in the plaster about eight feet from the floor. No one in the neighborhood heard the report of the weapon and the officers were unable to discover who had' fired the shot. W. G. Eliot Will Attend. Rev. W. G. Eliot, Jr.. minister of the Church of Our Father (Unitarian), leaves July 4 to at tend the Congress for Free Christianity and Religious Progress in Berlin, Ger many. During the remaining Sundays of July his pulpit will be supplied by Rev. Nehemiah A. Paker, Rev. Miss Marion Murdock and Rev. Earl M. Wilbur. The church will be closed during August. Judge KavanAugh Improves. En couraging reports of the condition of Circuit Judge J. P. Kavanaugh, who is confined to his home with an attack of typhoid fever, were given out yesterday. Dr. James F. All the logging camps in this vicinity have closed down for the Fourth and the ma jority of them will remain closed for two weeks. i It is estimated that not less than $200, 000 has been paid out here during the past two days in wages to the employes of the various camps. CLEARINGS STILL GRG PORTLAND THIRD IN PERCENT AGE COLUMN FOU WEEK. St. Paul and Spokane Only Two Cities to Show Greater Gain. Portland's Increase 41.4. Portland's bank clearings for. the week ending- last night showed an in crease of 41.4 per cent over the clear ings for a corresponding week a year ago. Only two cities in the country, according to Bradstreet's bank clear ings, show an increase moretthan this city for the week. These are St. Paul and Spokane. St. Paul shows an in crease of 51.1 per cent, while Spokane shows an Increase of 45.2 per cent. Last week Portland led all the other cities of the country in relative in crease in bank clearings over the cor responding week .of last year. The in crease for last week amounted to 73 per cent. ! The bank clearings for Portland this week amount to JS, 544, 000. Seattle, with $10,619,000, shows an increase for the week over a year ago of only 4.1 per cent. A few cities show a decrease for the week over the corresponding week of last year. Among these is New York, the decrease being 2.4 per cent. Boston shows a decrease of 9.2 per cent. WHERE JTO DINE.
