14 THE MORNING OREGOMAX, TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 1910. THREETHINGSGAN CUT FIGHT SHORT Hypothetical Yellow Streak in Black One Consideration, Says Jack London. "LUCKY PUNCH" UNLIKELY Writer Says There Is Nothing in Histories of Jeffries or Johnson to Warrant Prediction of Aught but Long Bout. (Cont1miid From First Page- traordinary power for assimilating punches as he has for delivering them. And so by all the tokens one is led to believe that the Reno fight will not be settled in short order. The chance is large that it will be a long fight with 30 or 12 rounds as the very minimum. The chance is even large that it may go to 20 rounds and there are many expert fight-dopers who would not be surprised to eee it run 30 rounds and even beyond. Jeff Will Need Prowess. It Is contended, when Jeffries begins landing his awful rips, that Johnson will speedily and genuinely, after very few rounds, go down for the count. In reply to this, let it be pointed out that Jeffries has first of all to land those awful rips and that he will have to land them on one of the cleverest de fensive fighters the ring has ever Jcnown. Johnson is not going to rush the light and no matter how much Jeffries may want to rush it. Johnson will be able for a goodly time to rob those rushes of their effectiveness. It is contrary to Johnson's famous loafing tactics which, I do believe, are very little deliberate and very largely tem peramental. It is his way. He has always done it, and there is not one chance in a million that in this forth coming fight he will revolutionize his whole method. Mental Effect Consideration. An opposite contention is that Jef fries will be speedily undone because of the mental effect produced by the negro's cleverness. It is urged that Jeffries, after vain ly trying to land a few of his rips, and after being rapped soundly in return, may lose his temper and rush wildly. This would certainly be peaches and cream for Johnson. The only thing against it is that Jeffries has never shown real temper in the ring. In his own way, he has always been a coo'-headed fighter. One has only to remember how, in liis battles with Corbett and iTitzsim mons, those men put it all over him round after round. Yet he kept" cool and fought on and on with but one thing in his mind, namely, the putting out of the man opposite him who momentarily was making a dub of him. Tiie results show just how masterfully he kept his temper and remained cool. Johnson Is Mouth-Fighter. Another thing is that Johnson is a past master at mouth-fighting when In the ring. In his battles with Tommy Burns, Johnson engaged in mouth-flght-lng with Tommy, with Tommy's sec onds and with the whole Australian audience, and the honors of every ex change belonged to him. It must be added as well that not one vile word or harsh epithet fell from his lips. Everything he uttered was pure fun, genuine wit, keen-cutting and laughter-provoking. Because of this ability of Johnson's it is urged that he may say things that will cause Jeffries to lose his head and deliver the peaches and cream. Jeffries Silent Fighter. In this connectior, all that has to be pointed out is that Jeff is a silent fighter. He has never indulged In ver bal tilts In the ring and no matter how hard Johnson wanted to, he would And It Impossible to engage In witty repar tee with a man who won't open his head. Nevertheless, there will be seconds in Jeffries' corner and ring side onlookers who will venture re marks and who will have it put over them by the colored man's wit. Unless Johnson Is quickly in a bad way at the hands of Jeffries, there will be more than one good sally and gen eral laugh at the ringside. DR. BANKER FACES ACCUSERS AILEGED WRECKER OF INSTI TUTION' WILIj FIGHT. Bellingham Fugitive Comes Back From California Voluntarily to Contest Embezzling Charge. BELLINGHAM, Wash., June 27. De termined to fight the case against him, H. J. Welty, charged with wrecking the Home Securities Bank of Belling ham, today entered a plea of not guilty to a specific charge of embezzling $10, 000 of the bank's- funds. Welty has been a fugitive for three months and returned voluntarily from Southern California, promising his friends -and the Prosecuting Attorney that he would plead guilty. He has now decided to make a defense. It is alleged that public feeling has been aroused by the hundreds of de positors who lost their savings in the failure of the bank, that Welty would face a series of charges and would likely receive limit sentences on each. This led to a change in his plans, and he will now make a defense. He was held without bonds. ASHLAND PIONEER IS DEAD Claybourne Neil Is Stricken, in His 9 0th Year. ASHLAND, Or., June 27. (Special.)
