16 THE 3IORXIXG- OREGOXIAX, THURSDAY, JTJXE 9, 1910. VETO IS SUSTAINED Council Backs Mayor in War on Pipe Trust. CEMENT WILL GET CHANCE Ellis Will Now "Try to Secure Adop tion of New Material in River side District--Dancing Will Be Stopped at the Oaks. Mayor Simon's veto of the terra eotta 3lpe ordinance was sustained by the City Council yesterday, there being but three Votes against it. Several of those who supported the' measure at the previous cession voted to uphold the Mayor's ac tion. Defeat of the "trust" measure by the Mayor will undoubtedly lead to another Attempt to amend the specifications so that cement pipe may be used in dis tricts where it is petitioned for. This effort will be made by Councilman Ellis, In whose ward lies the Riverside district newer, where there is a strong determina tion to have cement pipe instead of the trust-made terra cotta brand. Under a resolution by Lombard, intro duced during the Council session, it was ordered that none but members of the Council, city officials having business in the Council chamber and members of the press shall be permitted on the floor during Council sessions. Visitors and lobbyists will be compelled to occupy Bpace in the gallery, unless invited to the main floor by the Council. G. . W. Arms represented that the peo ple of the Alberta district seriously ob pect to a dancehall in that locality, and Asked that it be suppressed. He also ob jected to a poolroom there. 'I don't know," commented Cellars. "This Council has found a light place STor other dancehalls to land; probably the people who dance in Alberta should Eo to the Oaks also." The Council revoked the dancehall per mit and Lombard at once introduced a resolution, which was adopted, asking the Oaks to discontinue dancing in that re Bort.
