18 TTTT? JIORXIXG OREGOyiAX, TUESDAY, JXTNB 7, 1910. CITY HALL WILL HOUSE ATTORNEY Municipality's Legal Depart ment Will Be Right on Scene of Activity. GRANT SLATED FOR POST Lawyers Will Occupy Rooms Vacated by Board of Education and "Out elders" Will Be Asked to Make Way for Mayor's Forces. When Frank ' S. Grant is appointed by Mayor Simon to succeed City Attor ney J. P. Kavanaush, which will prob ably be within the next week, the of fice will be moved to the City Hall and will be installed in the rooms now occupied by the Board of Education. Salaries of the deputies will be in creased by the Council to meet the change in the plan, as they will then be required to devote all of their time to municipal business. With this understanding the Mayor has given his approval. There will be five deputies, as now. The City Attorney's salary is limited to $200 a. monthby the charter. The chief deputy will receive $185 a month; three next in line will receive $175, and the r fifth will receive $125 a month. At present the City Attorney's office Is located in a downtown block, and is too far removed from the base of the municipal business. Nearly all of the volume of business is transacted at the City Hall and Courthouse, which are close together. Time Will Be Saved. Mayor Simon believes that " it will feave a great deal of time an dconse Quently much money to have the office in the municipal building, and this will be done as soon as the Board of Edu cation vacates its apartments. Owing to the fact that the city busi ness is Increasing so rapidly, the ways and means committee yesterday recom mended an ordinance authorizing the Increase of salaries as stated, and the committee also ordered a communica tion sent to the Board of Education asking that the rooms now occupied by the Board be vacated by July 1 of this year. Without doubt the Council will soon require all "outsiders" to retire from the City Hall, as the room is badly needed for municipal business. This will include the County Superintendent of Schools, Oregon Historical Society and County Assessor. These offices occupy a large number of rooms. Resignation Xot In. Mayor Simon has not as yet received Ihe resignation of City Attorney Kav anaugh, who has been appointed by Governor Benson as Circuit Judge to succeed Judge Bronaugh, resigned. Until the resignation comes before the Mayor officially he will not act, but it Is generally believed that he will ap point Mr. Grant, who now holds thj position of chief deputy. The committee recommended appro priations for the purchase of a lot at Twenty-sixth and Reed streets, North Portland, and-two lots in Arleta for fire stations, upon a report of the fire com mittee of the Executive Board. City Auditor Barbur was present to ask that he be allowed two more depu ties, as he Raid the office work is so heavy that they are needed. The com mittee granted the request. The general fund is running low, and Jt may be necessary to sell a few bonds to carry everything along before the year ends. THEATER BUILDERS STRIKE Workmen Lay Down Tools on Morris House at Spokane. SPOKANE, Wash., June 6. Because nonunion workmen were employed to put the plaster of parts cornices on the Amer ican Music Hall, William Norris' new $200,000 theater, about 60 union workmen employed on the building threw down their tools this morning. The architects say the union is unable to supply the men and that no statement of the grievance was made before the strike was called. The men who went on strike include members of both federated labor unions, the plumbers, plasterers, carpenters, building laborers and hoisting engineers. The cement workers also refused to staVt work. 1AILV METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. June 6. Maximum tempera ture. 62 degrees; minimum. 52 degrees. River reading. 8 A.
