THE MORNING- OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, MAY 20, 191o. NINE KINGS MOURN BRITISH MONARCH London Crowded With Royalty and Thousands Go to See . Funeral of Edward. ROOSEVELT. WITH KAISER After Kneeling at Bier of TJncle, wniinm Taken ex-President to t Rooms for Chat City and Windsor In Purple Mourning. LONDON, May 19. Nine crowned beads of Europe and several heirs to thrones sat down in Buckingham Palace tonight at a dinner -which King George gave to all his eminent guests assembled In London for the funeral of King Ed ward tomorrow. After the dinner, the members of all ' the suites were intro duced to the King. It is noteworthy that though the pres ence of so many rulers and princes must necessarily throw a great sense ' of re sponsibility upon the authorities and the police, all move about freely and no' word is heard in the press or the public places of any apprehension-of vntoward inci dents. Price of Seats Falls. London today filled rapidly with people from the provinces and with foreigners. The whole line of the funeral route from early morning until late at night has been a surging mass of people, viewing the final preparations and purchasing seats. The stand business, however, has been greatly overdone, and seats for which $26 or tiO were asked a few days ago, are now being' hawked at from $5 to $10. Tlie neighborhood of the palaces, the government offices and the great houses today has seen a constant flit ting of royal carriages . with foreign representatives paying formal visits. Almost all the official vllstors went to see Sir Edward Grey at the foreign office this afternoon. . Kaiser Sees Dead King. Emperor William of Germany, who arrived this morning, was met by King George and later had an affecting meeting with Queen-Mother Alexandra. The Emperor then, accompanied by King George, proceeded to Westmin ster Hall and paid a tribute to the memory of Edward VII. . For a few moments while the Em peror and King knelt beside the cof fin, the thousands who were waiting in line to file past the catafalque were held in check, though those within Westminster Hall were permitted to remain. Upon rising to their feet the two monarchs clasped hands as they stood with bowed heads beside the body of King Edward. It was a strik ing scene and greatly moved all those who witnessed it. Thirty thousand soldiers from Aldershot and other military stations are camping in the parks tonight. The weather is hot and . thunder storms are not improbable. Many thousands of people will pass the night in the streets to secure points of vantage from which to view the cortege. The lying In-state closed at 1 o'clock. It Is estimated that 400,000 persons passed through Westminster Hall. King George, with King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, paid a final visit at a late hour. London Garbed in Purple. All London Is garbed In mourning. Four thousand evergreen wreaths, received by the committee of women from all parts of the country, have been hung along the route, and great masses of flowers are to be seen everywhere. A trial trip was made today by the royal train which will carry the body to morrow from London to Windsor. The royal salon has been upholstered in pur ple and white silk. A catafalque has been erected in the center and in this train will travel King George and Queen Mary, Queen Mother " Alexandra, eight other sovereigns and the near relatives. Special trains will convey the high offi cials the foreign representatives and spe cial !envoys to Windsor. The little town of Windsor has as sumed a purple hue. From the station at the foot of Castle Hill, where the body of King Edward will arrive, to the sovereign's entrance to the castle, everything, even the churches. Is cov ered with a mourning pall of royal purple. The stands erected in the open places have been enshrouded bo that the : coffin, with the royal mourners, wiil pass through an avenue of the most somber description. Rich and Poor Give Flowers. Throughout the day hundreds of poo pie Went -o Windsor from London, and a continued stream of motors and car riages poured through the castle gates. carrying floral memorials to the dead King. The cloisters of the Chanel al ready are 1 filled with flowers! and scores of extra racks have been erei ed on which to place others. On the lawns there is another great mass of flowers, little bunches of daisies or . buttercups from the village children lying side by side with great wreaths or orchids and roses sent by state of xiciais and the governments of the world Prominent -among those- societies is the offering "of the American Society the shield of the United States in flow ers.' The royal wreaths are of the sim plest character. Roosevelt and Kaiser Confer. Among the callers at" Buckingham Palace today were Colonel Roosevelt, the King of Denmark, the King of Greece, Prince Henry of Prussia and the Lord Chief Justice of England. Colonel Roose velt Inscribed his name in the book of King Manuel of Portugal and King Albert of Belgium. As he was leaving the palace, he met the f German Emperor, who took him to his I apartment for an hour's talk. The ex-President was one of the guests of King George's state dinners. With Henry White, the special delegate from the United tSates, he will appear in the fu neral procession. According to the ar rangement of the Duke of Norfolk, the Earl Marshal, the representatives of the United States will wear evening dress with block vest, black studs and white tie. ; Mrs. Roosevelt, . Mrs. Whltelaw Reid and Mrs. Nicholas Longworth will have places In St. George's Chapel at Windsor, where the funeral services will be con ducted, and where Edward VII will be temporarily sepulchred among the tombs of his fathers. Special.) That James J. Hill is back of the Qil more & Pittsburg Railroad in South western Montana, and that he purposes not only an invasion of California but also intends ' to protect his present Northwestern territory by shortening the distance ' between the Twin Cities and Puget Sound and Portland is indi cated by an official document tiled with the Secretary of State here today. This is a resolution adopted by the board of directors of the Gllmore & Pittsburg providing for the construc tion of a line from Armstead, its present Montana terminus, to Butte and also to Whitehall from Dillon.- Mont. When here recently, Mr. Hill and President Elliott, of the Northern Pa cific, announced new routes into Helena and as Helena and Butte are already connected by a Hill line, the extension of the Gllmore line, which is now con structed to a point in Idaho and headed for California, necessarily must mean an invasion of Harriman territory. There has been more or less mystery concerning the backers of the Gllmore line, but that Hill is behind it seems no longer deniable. City Can't Get Oil. 4 MT. ANGEL. Or.. May 19. (Special.) 0. A. C. 'Sins that threaten the very exist ence of this Christian Nation are the vulgar race for gain and the rotting sin of social vices," said the speaker. "The former of these vices the in ordinate love of money is the parental and passionate root of sins that have vitiated the whole world.
