Delegation Meets Mayor and Council Committee to Ask That Streets Be Vacated. Representatives of large wholesale houses of the East Side districts yester day afternoon presented to Mayor Si mon and members of the special Council committee on Broadway bridge negotia tions a petition requesting- early action by the Council In vacating certain streets on the Bast Side for use of the O. R. & N. Co. as terminal grounds and freight yards. A brief session of the committee was held at the City Hall, when 60 leading men handling millions of dollars' worth of goods every year -were present to ex press their desire for prompt action. Mayor Simon and Councilman Wallace, Menefee and Rushlight were present. They heard the statements of represent atives of the business men, after which the Mayor said that the committee would give earnest consideration to the petition. The business men declare that their district for years has been held in check by lack of freight facilities and that they deem It necessary to have immediate ac tion by the Council that will permit the O. R. & N. to provide terminal yards and freight depots on the East Side. Con cluding their petition, these business men say: A large number nt the firms locating on the West Side have refused to build on the East Side because of Inadequate rail road facilities. Notwithstanding" this, a large srowth has taken place on the East " " is uuuqq io grow, since a large t percentage of the population of the city is ' , " 'ue or me nver. -rne es tablishment of freight facilities will not only stimulate this growth, but will result l?- a V. This Is now handled In the West Side ter minals, which are badly congested, i u "ur belief that Instead of antagon ising the railroad company In its en deavors to build up the East Side, every assistance should be given It. .. 11 l Vlr, mPhatlc opinion that the crea tion of freight terminals Is as much 11 not more a public benefit as It Is to the Interest or tne railroad company. To create these terminals the railroad company is plan ning to devote more of its property than the land now occupied by the streets desired to te vacated. These streets the city can not dispose of If It would, for It has no " L, tnem- since they are merely for public use, and in this Instance we firmly believe the public use would be better served by devoting them to railroad terminals where the city and the company can meet on common ground, than to have them lie idle, as is the case at present.
