14 TTTE 3rO!trXG OKEGOXIAX, TUESDAY, APJRLL 12, 1910. OTHER LINES GOME WEST feOISE MAY BE PLACED OX NEW HUili ROUTE. Northwestern and Rock Island Be lieved to Have Made Traffic Agreement. BOISE, Idaho. April 11 Special.) From Information let out by Boise railroad men it Is believed the North western, Rock Island and Hill roads have agreed to burr the hatchet so far s Invasion of the Pacific Northwest is concerned. Traffic arrangements, it Is asserted, have been made, and while competition will be keen the bis railroad interests named will use each other's lines by paying the customary toll and thus r.vold the great expense of construct ngr their own railroad through to the Pacific Coast ports, which otherwise Would become necessary. Louis W. Hill, it Is expected, will announce that the Gilmore & i-ltts-burg is a Hill line, that It will build through South Central Idaho to Boise, Connecting in this city with the Boise fe Western, traversing the interior of Dregon to the Willamette Valley and klao to a connection with the Oregon Trunk Line: that the Northwestern and Mock Island will both use this road to lap the Northwest country, the North western building from Lander. Wyo., to Armstead. Mont., the present start ing point of the Gilmore Sc. Pittsburg, and the Rock Island taking over the tenver-Laramie road, connecting it with the Northwestern by building out of Laramie to Lander and using the Oilmore & Pittsburg for a through-to-the-Coast line. The route through Idaho cannrt be announced, for it is not entirely sur veyed, say railroad men. There are two routes considered in bringing the road to Boise. The first enters the Sawtooth range through the low pass recently discovered and a short tun nel, then following the Boise River canyon to this city. This is considered by far the most feasible route, as it furnishes a 1 per cent grade. The second route necessitates the driving of a long tunnel through the Fawtooth range farther north than the low pass above the headwaters of the Payette River, bringing the road onto the western side of the range, where surveys have been run to follow the ateep mountain sides winding around to Grimes Pass instead of following the treacherous Payette Canyon to Emmett. Passing over Grimes Pass the road fol lows Moore's Creek to the Boise River canyon and makes Boise connections with the Boise & Western for the in terior of Oregon and the Pacific Ciast. Robothan subscribed for sixty shares of the cap ital stock of the Prudential Life Insurance Company, of Newark, Kew Jersey, at $50 a share (instead of bu3dng 60 acres of land), and paid down $200 on the purchase price. On July; 17, 1879, he paid an addi tional $2000 in cash, which, together with $800 of stock dividends de clared, paid up his orig inal purchase of sixty, shares of the capital stock of the Prudential Life In surance Company. Sub sequently, Mr. Robothan was allowed . 914 addi tional shares of the in creased capitalization of the Company as his por tion of stock dividends earned on the original sixty shares subscribed for. In addition to these stock dividends he had drawn, up to 1902, $46,500 of dividends in cash. He sold 314 shares of his stock for not less than $100,000, and today pre sumably still owns 600 shares that are worth ap proximately $2,200,000, or 1000 times as much as his original investment. It was a lucky day for Mr. Robothan when he subscribed for those sixty shares of stock and made the first payment of $200. A remarkable oppor tunity is now offered to the people of Portland to make a similar invest ment by subscribing for a portion of the original capital stock of the Union Pacific Life Insurance Company of Portland, Oregon.
