THE 3IORXING OEEGOXIAX, MONDAY, MARCH 14, 1910. 11 NEW RAGE WANTED Woman Missionary Puts Sex Question in Front. TRUTH TO REMEDY EVILS Helen La Relne Baker Would Teach I J I Young Children Facts of Nature and Banish Fiction of Stork From Young Minds. Self-appointed missionary to the world In the advancement of her dqctrines, Helen La Rein Baker, of Spokane, was at the Hotel Portland yesterday, enter ing upon a tour of the United States In the formation of Eufcenic Clubs for the study and promulgation of naked truths. Before returning; to the North west, Mrs. Baker will address the con vention of the National Suffragist Asso clatlonsat Washington, and the Sunshine Club, of New York. "I do not want to be known as a suffra gist alons but as an advocate of equal ity," said Mrs. Baker. "The ballot is a step and women want it, but we also want to eliminate ideas of bondage and sex slavery In the marriage relation. Men Not to Be Ilated. "I am not an abnormal woman and do not hate men. They are our fathers, brothers, sweethearts and husbands; but I am working for a new race of men and women which the centuries will surely develop in every country of the globe. My work lies in reaching little children and giving them the truth about things as we know it. so that they will not spend a large part of their lives in disabusing their minds of false theories. Give me control of the child until i It is 8 years old and I will give it back to do with as the parents may wish. I will have filled its mind with truths that can never be eliminated. People can not be reformed in their notions of things after character has been formed. "I believe in kindergarten work and frequently visit such institutions, but I would eliminate the fairy stories of Santa Claus, the goblins and the giants and re place them with sweet and simple stories of actual life, the origin of the plants, nnd the beautiful things of Nature which the little minds are capable of receiving. Children to Hear Truth. "I would teach children that they did not grow in the garden to be plucked like cabbages, that they were not car ried to the home in the bill of an ugly bird, or found among the tools of a doc tor's grip, but that they sprang from be neath the mother's heart. I would re place ignorance with knowledge of the functions of the body, the abode of the soul, how to care for It and how not to abuse it. I would implant a full under Btanding of sexes, and would teach it by Illustrating the sex action of flowers. In sects and the little things around us which are full of life. "It is my contention that 95 per cent of married couples are only one-third married. A couple are physically at tracted to one another. There is no union of temperament or soul relation. They visit a politician and secure a mar riage license. Then they go to another politician or preacher and are pro pounced, through some sort of a cere mony, to be in position to begin populat ing the world. No preparation for the advent of hordes of little children is made: no thought of the future in store for them Is exercised until too late. As a result, 90 per cent of the children are not wanted when they arrive and grow up shifting for themselves, and their mind development is supplied by un truthful stories handed down for gen erations as the quickest way to satisfy the child. "I believe In marriage "and want the ideal home surroundings . to come to every man and woman, and the only way to secure it is to teach the chil dren. I am going on doing- it at my own expense, whether any other per son in the world assists or not. These things can be talked and written about frankly, without danger of encounter ing the Comstock law. There are now 52,000 members of Eugenic clubs in the United States. My time will be given to the work for the entire year." Barges to Haul Kail road Steel. VANCOUVER, B. C, March 13. (Spe cial.) The huge barges of the Canadian Pacific will be busily occupied this Spring in carrying north to Prince Rupert the steel material for the construction of bridges of all sizes for the line of the Grand Trunk Pacific. A barge loaded with 19 carloads of immense steel gir ders and trestle foundations will leave this week and in the next few months from 50 to 60 more carloads are due here to be shipped out.
