18 THE MORNING- OREGOMAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1910. RAIL SURVEY HITS RIVER ABOVE KELSO South Extensions of Tacoma & Eastern Indicated by Upper Cowlitz Transits. WORKMEN SCAN MAYFIELD Milwaukee Employes -15 Miles Down River Branch to Touch Kith Timber Section Survey- . org Also in CovvliCz Pass. KELSO, Feb. 22. (Special.) Further ex tensions southward of the Tacoma. & Eastern, now controlled by the Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railway, are Indicated by engineering activities on the upper Cowlitz. Men engraped in lumbering on the Cow litz bring reports to this point of the presence of surveyors for the Milwaukee as far down the river as Mayfield, 45 miles above Kelso. It was announced recently that the Tacoma & Eastern would be extended 20 miles from Glenavon to one of the tribu i taries of the Cowlitz. Work is now In progress on the grade between Glenavon and Morton, six miles, and risht of way has been purchased to Verndale, 14 miles farther. Road to Touch Verndale. Morton is almost directly south from Glenavon and is on Tilton Creek, a tribu tary of the Cowlitz, but instead of turn ing southwesterly down the Tilton the road turns southeasterly through a gap to Verndale. Verndale is on Rainy Creek, another tributary of the Cowlitz, and from there the survey follows Rainy Creek to the Cowlitz and then down the river to Mayfleld. The latter point Is about 90 miles from Portland, and about 3S miles from Verndale. The proposed extension of the road passes through a richly-timbered section and a prosperous farming community. It Is a virtue of the Cowlitz Valley lands that no matter whether bottom lands or hill lands, when the timber is removed the soil is unusually fertile and pro duces large crops. The district, with transportation, will develop into an im portant dairying community. .Milwaukee Surveyor, Maybe. Surveying parties have also been at iWork in the Cowlitz Pass and on. this kle recently, according to river men. The North Coast Railroad has been pro jected through the Cascade Mountains, the proposed route occupying a pass a few miles south of Cowlitz Pass. The North Coast route follows the Cowlitz to Its junction with the Columbia and Is projected on to Portland. The route parallels the Northern Pacific from a point opposite Olequa. The surveyors more recently at work in the Cowlitz Pass country are sup posed by "residents of that district to be working for the Milwaukee, but although they have worked down to within 25 miles or so of Verndale. there apparently lias been no attempt made to connect yet witn me i acorn a c eastern survey. j there is some speculation as to wnai the Milwaukee would want with another Toute through the mountains unless ft should be the plan to branch off from the main line and reach Portland by that route, for through business and the Ta coma & Eastern- connection for traffic between Portland and Puget Sound. There is likelihood, however, that the surveyors are really working for the North Coast. The Strahorn interests are preparing to develop water power from Packwood Lake, which is on the coast side of the range, south of Cowlitz Pass. The power that will be developed, it is estimated, will' exceed the combined power of the Electron and Snoqualmie plants. Once through the mountains, an excel lent water grade to Portland la found down the Cowlitz River. The- river is a stream of considerable volume and for the most part flows through a valley of sufficient width that construction work will not be exceedingly costly. The river is one of the few streams in Washing ton used for logging purposes for long distances. Booms of shingle bolts are row driven down the river for 140 miles to Kelso and the camps are pressing on farther up the stream. RECALL IS CALLED JOKE Slayor Not Worried Over Intima tions of If. D. Wagnon,' Jr. "I guess it must be a joke," said Mayor Simon yesterday afternoon, when asked about the action of the Alberta Improvement Association, fa voring his recall from office. "I have never heard any complaint from Al berta or Vernon, and do not know what. If any complaint, the people there may have. They have never complained to me. I don't intend to lose any sleep over It." The association wants Mayor Simon recalled, and although it will not start the movement, it declares that it stands ready to back up anybody or organiza tion that will do so. For the past two meetings the club has had the subject under consideration and has adopted resolutions in which It is declared that the Mayor is more interested In his friends than In the public. The state ment declares that the club will co operate with a movement to have May or Simon put out of office. Secretary H. r. Wagnon, Jr.. said yesterday: "We will not start a movement to recall the Mayor, but will help any organization that will start the ball rolling. The way the Mayor has handed it out to the people of this district has - exasperated the people, and they are ready to assist In recall." Mr. Wagnon did not say In whit way the Mayor had "handed it out" to the people of the Vernon district, and bis charges' were of a general nature, lie thinks that the Portland Munici pal Association will start the recall, find that the Alberta club will fall in line. FRUIT INDUSTRY DRAWS Hundreds of Young Men in East .Seek Homes in Oregon. "Oregon is the place for you" is a motto that has been preached to young and old by Charles M. Hemphill, an enthusiast of the West, who has been living in Ypsilanti. Mich., for two years, where he was in the banking business. Having decided that Port land and vicinity is the best possible place for business operations of all kinds, he returned to this city and is staying at the Commercial Club. He will go to Medford and other Southern Oregon- towns and will inspect the country In that locality within a few days. "The- West has a, great attraction to the people of the East,' said Mr. Hemphill at the Commercial Club yes terday. "While I have been In busi ness in Ypsilanti, I have been boosting Portland and Oregon. People In all positions of life, young and old, have asked me about this country, and I have told them just the plain truth. Even that astonishes them, but they are satisfied that it is wonderful, and many are turning this way. I look for the greatest influx into Oregon that has ever occurred. "The fruit industry is attracting wide attention," continued Mr. Hemp hill. "There is great interest in the proposition of securing small tracts for frultraising purposes, and many young men of my acquaintance are thinking of investing in this kind of property. " I also know of many who contemplate coming here to enter busi ness of various kinds, as they have some capital and desire to come to Portland or other Oregon places for in vestment, feeling that the climatic conditions are so. far superior to those of the East that life will be much more pleasant. "I have been absent but two years, but am astonished at the rapid growth of Portland, especially as to the many skyscrapers that have been construct ed and that are either under way or are contemplated. I kept in touch with Portland and Oregon while away by means of The Weekly Oregonian. JOHN KIEBNAN GOES-EAST AV1LI ACT FOlt O- omaha tklkpho:;: MCUS OK : Tioxns. Proposal to Reorganize Plant to Put It on Paying liasls Will Be Carefully Considered. John Kiernan, chairman of the commit tee representing the local owners of Oma ha Independent Telephone bonds. will leave tomorrow for Omaha to attend a meeting of representatives of the holders of these bonds called for the purpose of taking some concerted action in the In terests of the possessors of these securi ties. Mr. Kiernan will carry with him about $300,000 . out of a total of $400,000 of these bonds owned in this community, and with the representatives of other bondholders will' consider a proposal to reorganize the plans as the best means of protecting the interests of the bond holders. Under authority of the bondholders' meeting which was held at the Courthouse last week. Mr. Kiernan goea to the Ne braska elty as the personal representa tive of the owners of these securities. He !w also authorized to take such action as he may deem best calculated to conserve the interests of the bondholders and to in sure to them the best possible returns from their original investments. Mr. Kiernan reported yesterday that $2S5,000 of these bonds had been assigned to him. Another lot of $12,000 is due to arrive to day from San Francisco, so that when the local representative leaves for Omalia tomorrow he expects to have In his pos session at least $300,000 of these bonds. It is proposed by the Omaha bondhold ers', who have subscribed about $SOO.O00 of these bonds, to effect a reorganization of the company, make the necessary ex tensions to the plant and place the same on a paying basis. Indorsing this plan of action, the holders of these bonds at Los Angeles have assigned about $350,000 worth of the same bonds. The total of these assignments will be approximately $1,500,000 and is believed to be sufficient to warrant a realization of necessary funds with which to make further extensions, for which the Omaha company holds franchises, before the grants expire. With the completion of these extensions it is represented by the Omaha people that the plant can be placed on a paying basis. The meeting of the representatives of the interested bondholders has been called to be lield at Omaha on Tuesday, March 1. AL KADER PLANS BIG TIME Programme Is Arranged for Meet ing on February 2 6. By agreement between United States District Attorney McCourt and John M. Gearin, representing the defendants, all of the suits against C. A. Smith, the Minnesota millionaire, and his asso ciates, involving the cancelation of title to a large quantity of Linn County timber land, will be taken up in the Federal Court on April 18. The amount of land involved aggre gates approximately 8000 acres, and is estimated to be worth at least $600, 000. The cases will follow each other as rapidly as possible, and the intention is to retain the time of the court until all of the suits have been disposed of. There are 52 claims, which are alleged to have been wrongfully secured from the Government. These are the cases wherein the late ex-Senator Mitchell was charged with having received from Frederick A. Kribs a fee of $25 for each claim, and which Mitchell was to push to patent In the Department of the Interior. Frederick A. Kribs was alleged to have been acting for Smith, and the Govern ment charges that.it will prove that Smith, not only . furnished the money to bribe Mitchell, but advanced the amount necessary for "dummy" entry men to pay for the lands when sub mitting final proofs. In its efforts to recover the lands, the Government expects to prove that the men who made the original filings on the lands were real persons, but that they did not make the entries in good faith, being under contract to turn the lands over to Smith or his representa tives as soon as patent should be re ceived. It is alleged that the men who acted as dummies were bar-tenders and hangers-on around Portland saloons, the price paid them averaging $100 in each case. It is alleged that after the lands had been deeded to Smith, the lat ter reconveyed them to business asso ciates of Minnesota. CH1X.VMAX FIGHTS TO STAY Wong Ock Hong Appeals From Order of Importation. Fighting desperately for the privilege of remaining in the United States, Wong Ock Hong, has appealed from the order of deportation issued by Commissioner Cannon and will ask the United States District Court to review the findings. When arrested Hong exhibited a certi ficate of citizenship bearing the picture of a boy, aged 6 years. He asserted that he was the original of the photograph, and said that the certificate had been given to him by his father, a former resident of San Francisco. The photo graph does not in the least reaemble Hong at the age of 26. Hong asserts that he is a cook and has been employed by his cousin. The immigration authorities are of the opinion that he is a Chinese gambler, who attempted to secure admission to the country through a certificate belong ing to some other Chinaman. When first arrested. Hong could not name any of the streets of San Francisco, where he said he had been raised. At the ex amination two days later he named sev eral streets and Chinese business houses. OREGON OUTHUrJS O.A.C LOXG-DISTAXCE MEX ALL COME IX BEFORE AGGIES. Each college entered five men. Oregon's whole team crossed the finish line before the first O. A. C. runner came in. The race was run over a four-mile course, which was so deep with mud and slush that fast time was impossible. Hen ry, a freshman, developed, by Trainer Bill Hayward, furnished - the surprise of the meet by finishing first in 19 minutes, 63 seconds. Henry's shoe came off In a mud hole at the beginnig of the last lap. but he pluckily kept on running barefooted and increased his lead. Twenty-five years of suc cess and constant growth of practice are cer tainly a practical demonstration that argues the merit of my work. This is PROOF that no man can gainsay. This remarkable suc cess has built up my practice year by year, month my month, day by day, until it is today the larpest by far in the western part of America. Estimate for yourself my volume of practice as compared with the practice of other Western specialists. Is there the slightest probability that if unable to back up all my claims. Have you ever heard of a promise of mine remaining unf unfilled, or of one of my patients being dissatisfied with the treatment received? Consider these things and then come and talk with me in regard to your case. I am always willing to wait for my fee until a cure is effected. My Special Treatment The methods I devised -over twenty-five rears ago for treating men proved a radical step in medical science. Those methods have enabled me to cure ailments that were formerly regarded as incurable. In working out my methods T held the theory that impaired vitality, fnr instance, was riot a constitutional ailment, but a secondary affection, and, therefore, merely local. I reasoned that its constitutional effects were simply the results of tremendous waste of energy due to inflamma tion of a nerve center: that, this being true, a local treatment alone could effect a cure. Thereupon I devised the treatment I employ- today with such marked success. Indeed, I have never known this treatment to fall to effect a complete and permanent cure in a comparativel v short time. My treatments are also along original lines and are equally- success ful. Hence I reiterate that no man need be AILING. My Special Treat ment is an open door to strength and all the pleasures that belong to perfect health. Any man may avail himself of my services.
