JITE MORNING OltEGONIAN, TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, . 1910. 17 nmunrMiNnncDT unuu ULmnuu liuii i With Lighter Inquiry and Larg er Receipts, Wheat Lower. STEADY DECLINE ALL DT. lirscr Kstlmate of the World's Crop fty a London Statistician' Also lias a Bearish Kf feet Corn and Oats Drop. The continucii inactivity in the wheat trade has had the elYert of weakening' the mar Hot materially, and -prices now are 1 to 2 cents lower than a fortnight- ago. The demand has almost ceased from all quarters. 'The exporters have all the wheat they need, thfe millers seem to have pro vided for their requirements for some time to come, -while the California buyers are temporarily out of it. At the Barns time, there la more pressure to sell wheat than has been apparent since the holidays. The farmers are not offering, . but some of the speculators are trying o unload, not from lock of faith in the future of the market, but for financial reasons. Everyone connected "with the business is waiting for the opening of the Mexican demand. There is no certainty as to when the Mexican government -will ufke the duty off of wheat, but the announcement la ex pected before the month Is over. Oats and barley are also quiet and steady in price. The weekly wheat statistics of the Mer chants' Exrhange follow; AnM-Tfcsuk Visible Supply. Rushels. recreape. In statins that the Hamburg crude drug market takes up annually 10O to 2H tons of caaoara tsagrada .bark, the world's sup ply of -which comes mostly from Oregonf Consul-General Robert P. Skinner gives the following trade particulars at that German port: Prices quoted on -this article are variable, and, when low, naturally stimulate a dis position to buy.' They have fallen as low as 40 marks $9.32) and have been somewhat higher than 100 marks ($23.0) par 220 pounds. At the end of Xovember there were more offers In the market than buyers, and. a quotation of $130 per ton submitted re cently did not prove tempting. On Novem ber 24 offers were made of small lots at 7Vi cents per pound"! c. 1. f. Hamburg. - Orders are given usually for carload lots, and frequently the freight Is shipped, by rail to New York or Philadelphia, and thence to Hamburg. A good many orders are now being filled "by direct shipment via the Kos mofl line from Seattle to this city. The goods are sold on net weight, and when the shippers are, of proved reliability , German buyers would pay cosh against documents. It would be difficult to build up new, trade In this market without employing a drug broker, and the address of a suitable man Is forwarded. ThlB, as well as the list of large crude drug dealers in Hamburg may be secured from the bureau of Manufac tures. OREGON KGGS AOA1N ADVANCING. WitU IIlrher Prices in California, Local 4)u(h - tut Ions Are Raided. Conditions in the egg market have under gone a change since last week. The market Is again firm, with prices advancing. Some of the wholesale crocers were still selling at 80 cents yesterday, but on Front street higher prices were quoted, ranging from 32 H to 35 cents. Receipts were Hght and there was no accumulation on the Street. The San Francisco market has advanced sharply In the past few days, owing to northern buying. California eggs now cost about 89 cents, laid down here. The poultry market was weak 'on hens, which were quoted at 15 H 16 cents, bu,t small Springs were firm at 19 cents, though large .ones sold at the same price as hens. There were no new features in the but ter or cheese markets. PFADLOCK IX TUB HOP MARKET. Bnycr AV11 Wave to Ralne Their Bids If They want to Get Hop. The point has been reached in the hop market where it is almost impossible to buy. " Holders of all grades want more than buyers will offer an a deadlock again ex ists. It Is evident that the only way to get things moving strain is for the buyers to raise their bids, as growers refuse to make any concessions. In view of the strong and . general character of the demand, the indica tions are- that the Eastern dealers will raiso thair limits. Harry H. Plncus returned to Tacoma yes terday. George B. Dora Is now In chargo of the Portland office of Isaac Plncus & Sons- . Fresh Frotluc Receipts Ample. PRESSURE TO SELL Liquidation" JIcrt at an EncUn Stocl Market. LEAVES PRICES VERY WEAK Transcontinental Kailuoad Securities Acutely Depressed General Situ-- ation Offers Xo Explanation for the Selling Wave. . NI2W YORK, Jan. 17. Speculative senti ment blew hot and cold In the. slock market today and the sudden transpositions offered some violent contrasts. Demand for stocks early in the day was co impressive and seemed to be coming from such influential sources ' that the tone of the speculation became hopeful. One or two Items in the . news were construed In the same spirit. That stocks should stream into the market irt urgent liquidation and in overwhelming Volume in the presence of this hopeful feel ing argued for a weight of offerings over hanging the market that "dampened the cheerfulness and set conjecture to work again to fathom the motives and the sources of the-selling. The retrospect of the "market would have to go back many months to find prices at which stocks, could have been acquired to offer any profit, on the sales made at to- day's prices. This fact acpentuated the conviction of thoroughness of the liqui dating movement and prevented- unloading on the part of the buyers of lai-ge caliber, who had come Into the market' at ast early stage of last year's advance. . The belief was thus created In a closintr un of a mar ket campaign of long duration and wide spread uctnt. - 'There was nothing in the immediate sit uation to explain the pressure of the mar ket. The money position worked easier and the weekly bank, statement tf Saturday gave warrant for confidence In the security or xne money market from - further strin gency. There was an entraerRmnt of trnld for South A-merica, but the foreign exchange market was easier, in spite of the decline in money ratesi This movement might reflect renewal of foreign buying of cotton. The acute weakness ' of the' tranarnnti nental railroad stocks today Indicates mis- Kivuis on ine score ot decreased traffic, as well as a possible redistribution of traific growing out of thf opening of new Pacific Coast extensions.
