N. THE MORNING OEEGONIAN. SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 19 10. REID IS DROPPED ROM ROCK ISLAND Powerful Foreign Interests Ac quire Control Following His Retirement. PEARSON HEADS SYNDICATE Chihuahua & Pacific Railroad to Be Extended Xorth and West and Connect With Rock Island at 1 Paso. NEW YORK, Jan. 14. S. B. Otiapin & Co. have been punished. Daniel Q. Reld resigned yesterday as chairman of the ex ecutive committee of the Chicago, Hock Island & Pacific Hallway Company, and now, out of the mass of rumors that have cropped ip since the recent sensa tional rise and fall in Rock Island com mon, comes the apparently authentic report that the control of . the Rock Inland Company is to change, and that lteid's influence will be eliminated. Powerful foreign interests, headed by K S. Pearson, a London banker, owner of Mexican properties and with etronjr Mexican connections, has recently ac quired in the open market a large block of Rock Island common and preferred stocks. The exact amount is not dis closed, but probably represents about one fifth of the whole. Commissioners Work With 3Ioore. The commissioners, it ie understood, are working in harmony with Judge William H. Moore and First National Bank's in terests, who, with Mr. Reid, have in re cent years dominated the Rock Island properties. Judge Moore issued a state ment yesterday in which he said that he and Mr. Reid, contrary to -report, were working in perfect harmony, but he de clined to discuss other departments in the Rock Island situation. . Borne time ago Mr. Pearson attracted the attention of Wall street by organiz ing a $40,000,000 syndicate, which took over extensive Mexican properties owned by Colonel William C. Greene and also the Chihuahua & Pacific Road. Thljs railroad, it Is said, the Pearson interests will extend not only to the Pa cific, but north to FJ1 Paso, where it would tit in with the Rock Island. Jackson's Withdrawal Announced. Official announcement was made yes terday of the resignation of Richard A. Jackson as president and director of the Rook Island Company and of the selec tion of Robert Walker, formerly assist ant general counsel, as his successor. Mr. Walker also was elected a member of the board of directors, chairman of the executive committee and general counsel of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Company. As chairman of the executive commit tee of this road he will succeed Mr. Reid, who resigns. Mr. Reid will remain, how ever, as chairman of the board of di , rectors of this company as well as a director of the Rock Island Company and of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific. Further changes in the official force and directorate of these companies involving Mr. Reid are forecasted. PEBBLE MAKES, MAN DEAF Stone Carried in lOar 12 Years Causes Soldier Much Woe. COLUMBUS, O. A pebble placed In his ear 12 years ago, a boy s trick to remove water which entered the ear while he was swimming, was taken from its rest ing place for Floyd Oillesple, formerly h sergeant of Company I, Fourth O. N, i., the machine gun company. The peb ble was removed by Lr. Andrew Timber man. For two weeks Mr. Gillespie had been having trouble with his hearing and was convinced there was a stone in his ear. He had thought so before, but had never had trouble enough with the ear to cause liim to visit a physician. He told his friends his opinion, but they told him It was imagination. He determined to see a doctor and went to tr. Timberman's office. The doctor wont to work wit h the instruments and found the stone there as Mr. Gillespie had suspected. It had worked its way back into the ear to a very sensitive part, near the drum, and the pain of extract ing It was so great that the patient fa fnted. The pain was very short lived, how ever, and the doctor exhibited to his patient a pebble about the size of a pea. Mr. Gillespie is all right again, with the exception of a slight headache, but his hearing Is entirely restored. ELECTRIC FISHING LATEST I ndlana Sportsmen Say They Have Unique Method, but COLUMBUS, lnd.. Jan. 14. Fishermen nlong the line of the Indianapolis, Co lmnhus & South Traction Company have found a new and very effective way of tithing, and the method Is one In which the State Game and Fish Commissioner Hsures somewhat. The method is to hook a wire into the traction company's trolley and let the end of it fall into a utream. The watnr is thus charged with electricity to the extent that the fish are killed or are so stunned that they come to the surface, when they are gathered into boats. Many fish are being taken in this way along the traction lino and the fishermen believe that they are within the law, as 1 he method employed does not come un der the head, of dynamiting. lame and Fish Commissioner Z. T. Sweeney is a large stockholder in the traction company and thus he unwilling ly helps to furnish thn Juice with which the fish are killed and with which the law is violated, if, indeed, it is violated. At a meeting: of the board of direc tors of, the Portland Interscholastic League Thursday, afternoon at the Lin coln High School, Jefferson High School was admitted to the league for the coming baseball and track seasons. On the presentation of a petition by Professor McKinley, of the Lincoln High School, for double-header basket ball games in the interscholastio con tests, it was decided to lot the case rest with the managers of the teams in each game played. The idea ad vanced in favor of preliminary games between the second teams of the insti tution was that it would tend to draw larger crowds and stimulate interest. It was decided to postpone the ar rangement of the 1910 baseball sched ule until next Thursday af cernon. Regarding the controversy over the advisability of letting Runyan, the Portland Academy basketball center, participate in the game on February 4, between Portland Academy and Allen Preparatory School, it was de cided to ask Dr. J. R. Wilson, prin cipal of Portland Academy, to decide. The point maintained by the Allen I'rep players is that the game cannot be Included in the second term or school, and hence Runyan is not elig ible to play because he has attended Portland Academy but one term. LAW'S MESHES ABE BIG FUGITIVE MURDEROUS MANIAC MAY ESCAPE EXTRADITION. Captured in Minnesota, Fisher Can Defy Courts if He Proves He Is Now Sane. ST. PAUL. Aiinn., Jan.. 14. Ferdinand Fisher, foreman of the largest crew of strikebreaking: switchmen in the Minne sota transfer yards. Is in jail in St. Paul, awaiting; the examination of the Probate Court the latter part of this week as to his sanity. ' Information from Warren, Pa., upon which his arrest waa made charges that he broke the bars of a ceil in the state Institution for the criminally insane there. In which Tie was incarcerated for the murder of his brother-in-law Sep tember 11, 1908, at Erie, Pa., and escaped. This occurred last July. It is now held by County Attorney Richard D. O Brien, of St. Paul, that, should Fisher prove his sanity at the examination, he cannot be deported from this state, nor could such a request from the Governor of Pennsylvania be hon ored. Then for one of the most brutal murders in the history of Pennsylvania there will appear no possible further pun ishment. In so much possession was Fisher of his reasoning faculties- that he had cached in his shoe about $50 and had al ready retained an attorney in Minneapo lis, that, in event he should be overtaken by officers he knew to be pursuing him, he could resist a forcible kidnaping, which he considered probable, and con test his extradition on the grounds that he was not criminally insane. Imme diately upon his arreet Fisher sent for his lawyer. LABOR AGAINST I. W W. I"EDERjTION VOTES DOWN RES OLUTION OF INDORSEMENT.
