A fierce storm separated the ships at .."u. and not only were conditions for wireless communication most unfavor able, but the tempestuous sea resulted in seasickness In nearly ail quarters. Naval officers do not consider that the test Khows the apparatus to be a failure. :"d. In the next test, the ships 'wiil be stationed 300PJ miles from Brant Rock. Carl Zerrahn. noted musical conductor. 40 yearsj leader of the Handel and Hayden Society of Boston, died here today. Kirkland," a young man who came to Nelson and. among other stories, told of the tragic ending of the wedding ar ranged to take place here between his sister and Dr. Martin, of Revelstoke. owing to the sudden death of his brother. John Thaw Kirkland, at Revelstoke. He said he was a relative of distin guished Scotch families and a nephew of Mrs. William Thaw, mother of Harry Thaw. He also stated that he had just come into a fortune. He arranged with Rev. Mr. Ferguson here for the wed ding, induced him to make an an nouncement of the event in the news papers, and afterward cancelled the ar rangements on the pica of the death at Revelstoke. Acquaintances he formed here were so much impressed with his fortune and lineage that they eRlertajned him lav ishly and lent money to him. In Case County Magistrate Resigns Party. Man Will Be Named, Says Executive. "I have not received the resignation of Judge Webster, of the Multnomah County Court, nor have I entered Into any negotiations with the Judge, or any other person or persons, concerning the appointment of a successor to Mr. Web ster, in case his resignation should be placed in my hands." Governor Frank W. Benson was most emphatic in making the foregoing dec laration at his rooms in the Hotel Im perial last night. The Governor was Just leaving tor the Armory to review the Oregon National Guard, but he took time to say his present visit to Port land was devoid of political interest. Judge Webster recently' came to Salem and was in consultation with the State Commissioner of Insurance' concerning his engagement with a com pany which he has in view," said Gov ernor Benson, "but the Judge did not come to see me, nor has he at any time demanded that I should agree to name a successor whom he should select in consideration of his resignation. "I do not know whom I should ap point if a vacancy should occur. I say frankly that the appointee would be a Republican, and if possible to bring about such a result he should be sat isfactory to the Republican organiza tion of this state and county. Please make that plain. I mean a Republican of established ability and known in tegrity will be named by m to fill the place in case Judge Websterasha'l resign." , The Governor left the hotel in com pany with ColoneJ McDonell for the National Guard Armory. FOUR LOCAL FIRMS HOSTS Salesmen, In for Holidays, Enjoy Banquets Given by Houses. Four Portland firms last night gave' an nual dinners to - their employes at the Commercial Club. Eighteen salesmen of the Dwlght Ed wards Company, coffee dealers, were en tertained by Dwight Edwards, president of the company. Mr. Edwards is ac counted one of Portland s meet enthu siastic boosters.- and gave instructions to his men to boost Portland and Oregon at every opportunity Nearly all the men present responded with short toasts. Seventeen representatives of the Equi table Savings & Loan Association were entertained with a dinner by their man ager. A- L. Lovelace. Mr. Lovelace per sonally provided the dinner and was ac corded learty applause when he arose to make the principal address of the even ing. F. McKercher. secretary of the as sociation, acted as toastmaster. and among those who spoke were ex-Governor T. T. Geer, Judge John H. Scott and M. M. Johnson, the latter assistant secretary. The Mitchell, Lewis & Staver Company entertained 38 of its employes, most of whom were salesmen. Thirty salesmen of the Pacific Coast Biscuit Company were given a dinner by President Wittenberg. Several short after-dinner speeches were made. ARMY STABLE TO BE BIG Vancouver Barracks Structure to Ac- commodate 188 Animals. VANCOUVER. Wash., Dec. 29. f Spe cial.) Construction on a new artlllerr stable to accommodate 138 animals will begin at Vancouver Barracks in a few days. The -structure will be built of brick with a slate roof and will be 67 by 235 feet. The Department will also construct a storm sewerage system extending from the new stables to the Columbia River to carry off all storm and rain waters. A contract has Just been awarded for the construction of a sewer along tli street on which the officers' quarters are located.
