SERVICE BEGINS SATURDAY Northern Pacific Will Operate Two Trains Daily Between This City and Aberdeen Trip Can Be Made in a. Day. Beginning January 1, Portland busi ness men will be placed on an equal footing with the merchants of Puget Bound points in competing for the busi ness of Grays Harbor. This Is made possible by a revision of the schedule of Northern Pacific trains announced yesterday by A. D. Charlton, assistant passenger agent, to become effective next Saturday. Under the present schedule Portland people cannot reach Aberdeen until 4:30 P. M., or three hours later than pas sengers from Seattle. Beginning Satur day the morning train from this city will connect with the fast train from Seattle and Puget Sound points at Gate Junction, the combined train : reaching Aberdeen at 12:40 P. M., or nearly four hours earlier. The time of the after noon train, leaving this city, has been changed from 3 to 3:30 P. M., with a through service to Aberdeen, giving Portland two through trains jaally to points on Grays Harbor. Connections will also be made by both trains at Chehalls for South Bend branch points. By these changes in the schedule it will be convenient for the Portland business man to visit Aberdeen and other points on the harbor and return the same day. Chamber or Commerce Appeals. Portland business Interests for years have been handicapped in their business relations with Grays Harbor cities be cause of the fact that a train which leaves Seattle earlier in the day now reaches Aberdeen at least three hours in advance of the train from this city. Through the Chamber of Commerce, the business men of this city have repeatedly endeav ored to secure improved transportation facilities between Portland and Grays Harbor, but without the desired success. It was recognized that the merchants of this city were laboring under a serious handicap. They Insisted of the North ern Pacific officials that the communica tion between this city and Aberdeen be made equally convenient as the service maintained between Puget Sound cities and points on Grays Harbor. It is in re sponse to this insistent demand that the Northern Pacific has decided on the re vised schedule. Train No. 30S, now leaving Portland at 8:15 A. M. will be changed to leave at T A. M., arriving at Centralia about 10:40 A. M.. Tacoma 12:35 noon, and Seattle S:15 P. XL. connecting at Centralia with the fast train for Grays Harbor, arriv ing at Aberdeen at 12:40 noon, also con necting at Chehalls for South Bend Branch points. This train stops at all intermediate points and enables passen gers to leave Portland, visiting Grays Harbor, South Bend Branch points. Ta coma. Seattle vand all intermediate points, having from three to four hours or more in which to transact business and return to Portland at a seasonable hour the same day. This gives much better service to all local points in the territory mentioned and will enable com mercial men and others better to make the territory. No. 814. PorUarvd-Vancouver Limited, the fast train between Portland, Tacoma, Seattle and Vancouver, B. C, and inter mediate points, will continue on its pres ent schedule, leaving Portland at 10 A. M. No. 834. the Puget Sound Limited, for merly leaving Portland at 3 P. M., will leave at 8:30 P. M., arriving at Seattle at 10:45 P. M., making connection for Grays Harbor and South Bend Branch points and ail Intermediate points, giving Stia.de Trees The Addition with Character esxirelhunyi 'do. 522 Corbett Building, Phones: A 1515, Main 1503. two trains daily between Portland and all points on the Grays Harbor and South Bend branches. Ko. 302, the Night Express, continues ofl present schedule, leaving Portland at 12:15 A. M. This Is the fast night serv ice to Puget Sound points, both standard and tourist sleepers on this train; cars are set at Portland for occupancy at 9 P. M-, enabling passengers to retire at a seasonable hour; cars set on arrival at Tacoma and Seattle, passengers occupying them until 8 A. M., if so de sired. Day Train Unchanged. Southbound, train No. 307 will leave Se attle at 8 A. M., arriving in Portland at 4 P. M., same as at present, handling business from Tacoma. Seattle and in termediate points, including Grays Har bor and South Bend branches. ' Train No. 333, Puget Sound Limited, will leave Seattle at 1:15 P. M.. arriving In Portland at 8:35 P. M., same as at present, handling business from Seattle, Tacoma and all intermediate points. V Train No. 313, Vancouver-Seattle-Ta-coma Special, fast train from Vancouver, B. C, and intermediate points, with con nection from Grays Harbor and South Bend branch points, will leave Seattle at 4 P. M., arriving in Portland at 10:80 P. M-, necessitating no change from present schedule. Train No. 301, the night train from Seattle to Portland, formerly leaving Se attle at 10:40 P. M., will leave at 12:15 A. M., arriving in Portland at 7:30 A. L This train will have both standard and tourist sleepers, which will be set at Seattle and Tacoma ready for occupancy at 9:30 P. M. and can be occupied after arrival at Portland until 8 A. M. if de sired. Day Suffices for Round Trip. "It will be seen that the Northern Pa cific will continue to operate four trains, all trains to be electric-lighted and steam heated, with parlor cars, sleeping cars and dining cars," said Mr. Charlton yes terday. "The Grays Harbor service to and from Portland will be greatly im proved. The morning train from Port land, leaving earlier, will give Portland lirst-class service in every respect and making better arriving hour at Grays Harbor and an opportunity to transact business and return the same day, if necessary. "The afternoon train leaving Portland at 8:30 P. M. will have through coach to Grays Harbor. From this it will be seen that Portland will have two trains to the Harbor a day, giving first-class service. The opportunity given the trav eling public to take the early morning train from Portland and visit surrounding territory and return same day will be srreatly appreciated and especially by commercial men. "It is possible for the traveling pub lic to reach all points within a radius of about 200 miles from Portland with every comfort and convenience." Portland Greatly Benefited. "This improved Bervice between Portland and Grays Harbor points is of the greatest importance to the busi ness interests of this city," said Wil liam MacMaster, president of the Cham ber of Commerce, yesterday. "The merchants of this city have' for years been unduly handicapped in bidding for the business of Grays Harbor. They are to be congratulated that the North ern Pacific has concluded to provide for them a train service which wlft give them an equal chance with Puget Sound points in competing for this business." "Portland business men may con gratulate themselves and thank the Northern Pacific people for the im proved train service that has been ar ranged between this city and Grays Harbor," said Herman Wittenberg, chairman of the transportation com mittee of the Chamber of Commerce, last night when told of the Northern Pacific Company's new schedule. "It will enable the business men of this city to get into this territory in West ern Washington and compete with the merchants of Puget Sound cities for this business on an equal basis. That is what we have been asking for some time." MRS. H. J. CORBETT DONOR James Laidlaw, Credited With Poor Farm Dinner, Modestly Disclaims. PORTLAND, Dec. 27. (To the Edi tor.) I notice in The Oregontan Sun day that I am given the credit of pro viding materials for the dinner at the Poor Farm on Christmas day. I desire to see this corrected and credit given where it is due, though I m aware the donors do not seek publicity for their good deeds. An ample supply of turkey was donated, as has been her custom for years past, by one of Portland's noblest and most philanthropic women, Mrs. H. J. Corbett; the cigars by Sig Slchel and cakes and candy by Herman Wittenberg. I am deeply interested in the welfare of the inmates of the institution, and would like to see a more general per sonal interest taken in the many well deserving people whom misfortune has driven to seek asylum there. The clergy of Portland are not generally doing their duty by these people. In this connection I would like to ask any churches which may have a supply of gospel hymns 1, 2, 3 and 4, which may be In good condition and not now used, to donate them to the farm for use in the services held there.
