15 BUILDERS' OF NEW Y.WI.C1 REJOICE Business Men at Dinner Handsome Home Laud Big Enterprise. in COMMITTEES ARE PRAISED Campaign for Funds Reviewed by Secretary Stone Wealthy of Portland Thanked for Aid. "Subscribers' Day" Today. As a climax to their mutual effort, which resulted In the completion of what Is considered one of the handsomest and most modern Y. M. C. A. buildings in the United States, many of Portland's leading business men dined together in the new structure last night to celebrate the glory of their achievement. H. W. Stone, secretary of the local Y. M. C. A., -who was one of the after-dinner speakers, said It was the happiest day of his life, and the sentiment was reoelved with favor by his hearers who worked with him for the new structure. This Is T. M. C. A. wok in Portland, so designated because of the organiza tion's celebration of the completion of its new home. The dinner last night was the feature of yesterdav'a jubilation, pro grammed as "workers" day." Today will be "subscribers' day." Short Talks Praise. Robert Livingstone, vice-president of the Portland Y. M. C. A., presided at the dinner last night, In the absence of W, M. Ladd, president As toastmaster, he caused the speeches to be short, and they were generally to the point. 8. Q. Reed, chairman of the cltlsens' committee, gave the first talk of the even ing. He made special mention of the activities of the 'building committee. Wal ter A. Goss, chairman of the "everybody jfives" committee, remarked that this is the time of year when business men take stock to determine how much they own. In taking his stock every man in Port land should Include the new Y. M. C. A. building, he declared, for It is the property of all men who wish to enjoy it. "This building Is a wonderful thing." he said, "and I am glad that I had & chance to take part in getting it built." B. B. MacNaughton, architect of the building, praised the work that had been done by S. A. Brown, chairman of the building committee, and Secretary Stone, lie explained how these two men had left nothing undone to aid the work. "I want to express my appreciation of the manner in which I have been backed in my work as architect." said Mr. Mac Naughton. Structure an Enjoyment. In calling on Dr. Brown for a speech, Chairman Livingstone paid him a high compliment for hie efforts in behalf of the building. "If every young man using this building enjoys it as much as I have enjoyed the work in aiding to get it, then he is cer tainly getting his share of good from it" said Dr. Brown. A. F. Flegel visited the new building for the first time last night. He said its magnitude' was a pleasing surprise. B. Lee Paget, who has been handling the funds for the new building, said the subscription list was satisfactory in every way. The response to request for aid had been generous, he declared, and the subscriptions had been made In good faith. There are still a large number of people who have not yet been asked to con tribute, he eaid, and from these he be lieved additional funds would be received. "I apprehend, however," said Mr. Paget, "that this building will never accomplish its purposes and continue to be what It was Intended for, unless it receives the constant support of the people of Port land." Fnncl Campaign Kevlewed. The last and principal talk of the even ing was by Secretary Stone, who gave a brief history of the campaign for funds for the new structure. He explained how the building committee found that, after every sourre was apparently exhausted, it still needed about $!.0OO to complete the huildlng. It was a crisis In the work, and there was danger that the project would fall, as had a previous project or a like nature some years ago, but the committee took up the work with renewed energy, explained the case to a few of the more interested men of wealth, and these re newed the general interest in the project by each increasing his contribution sev eral times Ita original amount. Mr. Stone explained that the new struc ture actually had more association room than the central Y. M. C. A. building In Chicago. There Is more money coming In, a greater increase in members arid more young men taking advantage of the building than he and the building co mlttee had originally hoped would result from the work that was done. An effort Is to be made to get as many people as possible to visit the new build ing this week, that the public might real ize its extent and uses. Tomorrow will be ladles' day, and a reception will be held from 2:30 to 5 o'clock P. M., to which the women of the city will be made welcome. Light refreshments are to be served. The new building is at Sixth and Taylor streets. CATTLE TO BE DISPLAYED Exhibition of Cattle for Prizes On at Stockyards Today. POWDER FLARES, 2 BURNED Dr. It. K. Hall and James Henry In jured While Experimenting. While conducting laboratory work in the Administration building at the Ex position Grounds. Dr. Roy B. EL Hoffmann, secretary of the Govern ment Standard Explosives Company, de clares the men were testing the velocity of oxygen powder, one of th fcompany'8 preparations. "Some of the powder was moistened with water," said Mr. Hoffmann, "and then alcohol was poured on to dry It quickly. From what I can find out a test tube of acid standing near was then ac cidentally upset. Falling on the alcohol. It was set ablaze. The powder caught and made a flare. In which the men were caught. There was considerable smoke and the fire department turned out and subdued the slight blaze. Dr. Sternberg says it will be some time before the young men will be fit to move. Neither Hall nor Henry wished to dis cuss the matter, but said they were con ducting chemical experiments and did not know how the blaze occurred. Jap Patient Suffering From Ennui Queer, bat Not Vnusual Case Arises nt Good Samaritan Hospital Doc tor Plan Surprise for I.asy Man. Although there Is no disease written on his hospital chart, J. A. Klngley, a Japanese patient at the Good Samari tan, has had his case diagnosed by his virulent variety. Klngley is a railroad employe and during the snow storm overworked, and did, in reality," require a rest. He was sent to the hospital some days ago and in two days was able to move. Klngley was told be was ready for work again but declined "with thanks." He has a most healthy appetite. Yesterday one of the hospital In ternes was asked to examine the case by the attending: railroad physician without mention being made of any report. The house doctor wrote: "Dear Dootor: I believe Klngley is suffering from a severe attack of ennui laziness In its most malignant form." and as that agreed with the physician's own diagnosis, there is a slight storm brewing in the dim dis tance for Mr. Klngley. A similar case was cured in the hos pital by the ordering of medicines hourly, day and night, that were nau seating, foul smelling and worse tast ing, so there was a world of meaning: in the physician's remark yesterday. "I have every hope of 'curing King ley in a day. I venture even to think be will be really desirlous of leavng tomorrow." SMALLPOX HITS MOSCOW Hotel Employe Attends Dance and Hostelry Is?
