Yes terday afternoon he was released and found Wilson last night in his room in the Central Hotel. "I asked him to give me my money back and he refused. I then shot him." said Custls. Custls described his purse and the de nomination of the bills. The purse was later found under Wilson's pillow by Sergeant Goltz. One of the bullets took effect in Wil son's stomach. Another entered his breast near the heart. Wilson had a cake of toilet soap in a shirt pocket over his heart. The bullet struck this. The cake was oval in shape and the ball struck it on the left side, causing It to slant outward, which probably saved him from Instant death. Custls walked to his own room, placed the gun under a pillow and walked out on the street. Patrolmen Wanless and Shaffer, who were attracted to the scene by the shots, caught Jiim at Burnside 4 street. 'I was looking for a policeman." said Custls. "and did not intend running away. Otherwise I would have taken my gun along." Wilson was sent to 9t. Vincent's Hos pital, where Dr. Fred J. Ziegler extracted the ball from his back. There Is little hope of his recovery. At police head quarters only a charge of drunk was lodged against Custls. From the circum stances he may not be prosecuted on the charge of shooting Wilson. The fact that the stolen goods were found in Wil son's room after the shooting and the fur ther fact that Custis reported the robbery to the police yesterday morning, are in the Imprisoned man's favor. Wilson has been In Portland only a few months, coming here from San Francisco, where his relatives are said to reside. Oustis has been in the Pacific North west about as years and Is a Woodchopper bv trade. ' FUST GAMES STIR DEVOTEES Queens Park Outplays and Outgenerals Multnomah, Three Goals 1o One. CRICKETERS TAKE GAME Excitement Enough Generated to Last for Months Multnomah Players Handicapped by Poor Training and Disability. SOCCER LEAGUE STANDING. Team Won. Lost. Drawn. Points. Cricketers 2 Queen's Park. .1 Multnomah ...1 Nationals .... Ocean les 0 i In the double game of soccer football played yesterday at the baseball grounds. Twenty-fourth and Vaughn streets, there 'was enough excitement to keep all the soccer fans talking for months. In the morning, the Queen's Parks outplayed and outgeneraled the Multnomahs by S goals to L in one of the fastest games ever seen In this part of the country, not even excepting the celebrated games that the Ilwaco, Wash., team put up in the palmy days of Its greatness. In the afternoon, the Cricketers walked away with the Oeeanics. ' Classy soccer was seen In the Multno-mah-Queen's Park gam, in which the superior condition and experience of the Queen's Park men won. The Multnomahs lost because they didn't go Into the game with enough soriossness, didn't train hard enough, and were handicapped by the want of condition of Sidney Mills, their center forward, and because Young, the outside left, was not allowed to play In his proper position. Young Is not fast enougti as outside left and his opponent often got past him, winning the ball. Buchan and Drake were the two best all-around players on the field, and they were as strong at the finish as at the beginning. Barton played a star game at goal, and used excellent Judgment. Dick scored the only goal for his side by pretty footwork. About 11:40 o'clock, when the Queen's Parks were playing downhill, they wore out their lighter opponents, and Barbour scored by a lightning shot. The Queen's other two goals were scored, In fine fashion, by McPherson at 11:46 and Gray at 12:02 o'clock. Penalty kicks were awarded both sides, but the ball Was kicked widely each time, without a score. The Queen's team was clearly the bet ter of the two. It worked hard and trained faithfully for the victory, and deserved to win. EUGENE HIGH BEATS SALEM By Result of Thanksgiving Game Championship Is Claimed. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eugene, Or., Nov. 25. (Special.) On McArthur Field this afternoon Eugene High School won a fiercely contested game of foot ball from Salem High School, by the close score of 5 to 0. The only score of the game came after the first four minutes of play. Eugene kicked to Salem, who failed to make yardage, and punted In the center of the field. Captain Jenkins, of Eugene, who played the star game for Eugene, then bucked the ball straight down the field and Koch was put over for a touchdown, making yardage on every down. In the second half Salem braced and through the excellent work of Krebs and Tanner, several times threatened their opponents' goal, but Eugene always held at critical times and punted out of dan ger. Luck, of Albany, and Hayes, of Portland, officiated. Washington Hlgn, which Won the cham pionship of Portland, has steadfastly re fused to play Eugene, and unless a post season game Is arranged, the local team will lay claim to the state championship. It was Albinson who enabled the Cricketers to tie the Queen's Park eleven two weeks ago. The Oceantcs-Crlcketers game blew hot and cold by turns. It was seesaw throughout, and the Oeeanics, who were supposed to be considerably weaker thari the Cricketers, were able to make a good showing by aggressive defense work. In addition to Jack Mackle, Jim Mackie, Clark and Mclntyre did unusually well, while the star of the defense was Art Mills, at left fullback. Ban ham was again the Cricketers" shining light. Gray and Copplnger fell below expectations and the halves' work was rather ragged. A peculiarity of the game was a goal Scored against the Cricketers by Karr, their own goalkeeper, who, In handling a hard shot, drew the sphere over the goal line In throwing It out. Lawson also scored one for the Oeeanics, which would have tied the game, but Referee William Richmond declared it an offside play. MEN i. . , II MA QUALITY IN EXPERIENCE Experience is a thing of quality as well as quantity. Tears of praotlce are no true measure of a physician's skill. Medical spe cialists, as a rule, give prominent mention to the number of years they have devoted to the practice of the various specialties. In this regard I do not differ from most other specialists. I frequently state that I have treated men only for 25 years. This is a thing of importance that can be told in a few words. That's why I tell it so often. The thing I now wish to tell about requires more space In telling, and I may or may not tell it more than this once. Experience Isn't worth r.iu 'h unless It has quality In It. In fact. It isn't worth any thing. It Is just like all other bad things the greater the quantity the more badness there 18. 1 Co not mean mis as a imrsurm reference to any other doctor, whether getier- al practitioner br specialist. I merely make the statement because it is the truth that has application here. To do a thing wrongly a thousand times only fits one for doing It wrongly again, and the oftener he does It wrongly, the less apt he Is to do It rightly? To treat a thousand patients Indifferently or carelessly doesn't make skill but It adds Indiffer ence and carelessness. To treat a thousand patients thoughtfully, care fully and conscientiously de-relope skill, a thing of value to the physician himself, and to very patient he may treat thereafter.
