Btrrs Quarter Bixxtk.. The executive committee of the Sellwood branch T. M. C. A. has secured the ouarter block, on East Fifteenth street ant' Spokane avenue, on which an option was held for J1950. Rev. D. A. Thomp ton. secretary of the executive com mittee, said yesterday, that on the re turn of State Secretary Rhodes from ' Idaho, an architect would be engagsd to draw plans for the building. Mount Tabor Church Gives Contracts. The contract for excavation of the foun dation of the new Presbyterian Church, on Belmont and East Fiftieth ptreets, has been let to Howitt & Co.. and the con tract for the stone work to the Cooper Sar.d Stone Company. Work on the base ment excavation has been begun. Stone for the walls will come from Southern Oregon. The edifice, complete, will cost SI 1.000. Rev. A. J. Montoomert in New Field. Rev. Andrew J. Montgomery, formerly of the Third Presbyterian Church of this city, who accepted a call to the Oak Tark (Chicago) Presbyterian Church, and Mrs. Montgomery are now situated In their new home. The Oak Park Church gave Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery a most hearty welcome. Church Dedication Planned. Ar rangements are being made to dedicate the new Highland Baptist Church, on Alberta and East Seventh streets. Sun day. December 12. Calvin SL White. 502-503 Dekum bids'. : : i Pioneer Woman Buried. The funeral of Miss Jane Camaby, who died at the home of her nephew, J. A. Carnaby, at 391 East Davio street, November 21, was held yesterday afternoon. Rev. H. S. Black, officiating. Interment was made In Rose City Cemetery. Miss Carnaby was 89 years old ami was born in London. She moved to Australia when 30 years old, where she lived until 1S6S. when she went to San Francisco. For 25 years Miss Carnaby lived in Oregon, 20 years being spent in The Dalles and five years In Portland at the home of her nephew. Several rela tives In Australia survive. Ex-'-Cop'S" Bed on Bar Cost S10. David Smidell. formerly a policeman at Spokane. Wash., was brought before Judge Bennett yesterday morning for disorderly con duct. Smidell was fined S10. Patrolman Small arrested Smidell In a saloon, at Sixth and Burnside streets, where Smidell had partly disrobed and had gone to bed on the bar. When the bartender re monstrated Smidell grew so threatening that the saloonman was afraid to eject him and sent for a policeman. Smidell said he had been robbed of S45-,, Councilman Devlin's Father III. John C Devlin Is critically ill at the home of his son. Thomas C. Devlin, Council-man-at-large. at 774 Multnomah street, and probably will not survive today. Mr. Devlin is 86 years old. He Is a native of Ireland and came to the United States In the earlv '40a. Subsequently he re moved to Missouri and about six years ago came to Oregon with his wife. Jolnng their son. who was then City Auditor. Rev. W. T. Jordan to Retire. Rev. W. T. Jordan, pastor of the Central Bap tist Church, at East Ankeny and East Twentieth streets, who resigned recently. 1 serving his last week as pastor and will deliver his farewell sermons next Sunday. He was pastor of the Central Church for four years. The pulpit com mittee has several Baptist ministers under consideration, but a call has not been Issued. Barrett s Birthdat Remembered. The Multnomah Council of the Royal Arcanum has forwarded a jeweled em blem of the order to John Barrett of the Bureau of the American Republics at Washington. T. C. as a birthday gift. Mr. Barrett Is a member of the local branch of the fraternal organization; Next Wednesday will be his birthday. John Pearson Passes. After several weeks rest in an unavailing effort to save his life. John Pearson, president of the Swedish Society, Llnnea. passed away at an early hour yesterday morning, at the St Vincent Hospital. Mr. Pearson has resided in Portland 18 yearf. coming from Omaha. He was 4S years old and haa re latives at Trout Lake. Wash. FiRB Visits Hat Store. Fire supposed to have originated from defective electrio wiring In the celling occurred yesterday at noon In the store of the United Hat Company, at 336 Washington street. Fire men DUt out the blaze with a hand ap paratus. The damage by smoke and fire to the stock was estimated by the proprietor at about S1500. Wildcat Killed Near Montavilla. O A. Stevens killed a wildcat a short dis tance east of Montavilla. near the O. R & N. Co.'s line Sunday. He was out hunting along the track when the brute appeared In the brushcloee to the hunt er's dog. Joe Thomas, a resident of Fulton, who for many years has been known by the sobriquet of "Bud" Thomas, was held by Judge Bennett yesterday morning In the Municipal Court to await Investiga tion on the charge of maliciously destroy ing the life preservers on tho Sellwood ferry. Countv Commissioner Llghtner and E. J Rankin, watchman on tho ferry, appeared in the Municipal Court yester day morning to Insist on prosecution. Thomas had been caught at 2 o'clock yesterday morning hacking at the life pre servers with a knife. He had walked from his house with a lantern and the light had attracted the attention of Rankin. Thom as told Judge Bennett that he had 10 children, four sisters, a mother and a wife to support and that the job of look ing after them had been too great a strain on him. Vivisection will be one of the Import ant subjects to be discussed at the semi annual meeting of the Oregon State Academy fit Sciences, at Forest Grove on November 26-27. On Friday, the first day of tho session. Professor A. M. Bean, of Pacific University, will read a paper on "Vivisection Is It Justifiable?" which will set forth the Inhuman side of the subject which treats of the dissection of animals while alive to cultivate science. A discussion of the subject will follow the reading of the paper. At the office of F. W. Power, secretary of the organization, the previous reports given out relative to the coming meeting were said to have been inadvertently misconstrued.
