f NOTED PUBLISHER VISITS PORTLAND Lord Northcliffe, Proprietor of Over 60 British " Papers, Exceedingly Democratic. TRIP OVER CITY PLEASES Publisher of London Times Says Danger of War Between England and Germany 'is Not to Be Underestimated. Lord Northcliffe. the foremost news paper man and publisher In the world today, better known as plain Alfred Harmsworth. the name under which he amassed his KTeat fortune and rose from a poor boy to proprietor and owner of the London Times and more than 60 other Influential British publications, was In Portland for a few hours yesterday. With Lord Northcliffe In his private car Independence, which arrived on the second section of the Seattle train shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday after noon, were Lady Northcliffe and Mrs. Charles Furse, Evelyn Wrench, editor of the London Overseas Mail, and Mo berly Bell, managing director of the London Times. While their car was at the depot preparatory to leaving on the California Express for Fan Francisco at 7:45. Lord and Lady Northcliffe, Mrs. Purse and Evelyn Wrench took a cab and drove through the business part of the city and up on Portland Heights. Doesn't Talk With Drawl. Lord Northcliffe Is as unlike the ordinary American conception of a British lord as could possibly be. He does not talk with a drawl, and he does not even possess a monocle. He and Lady Northcliffe are aa simple and democratic in their dress and manners as anv American could be. Lord Northcliffe was deeply Interested In everything he saw on the drive, and with the same astonishing grasp of de tail and genius for organization that has made possible his wonderful suc cess, he noticed everything, from the different species of birds, trees and plants seen along the way. to the safety brakes In use on the Portland Heights cars and the fact that Southern Paciflo locomotives burn oil Instead of coal. All the members of'the party were un reservedly dellfrhtedwith Portland, and Lady Northcliffe in particular was charmed with K well-kept lawns and rosea and the Idea of calling Portland the Rose City. Portland waa the first Western city Lord Northcliffe has had the opportunity of seeing, for the party has been travel ing through Canada, and from there to Portland with hardly a stop. A few hours were put in at Victoria, but they went through Seattle at night and had no chance of seeing the city. Their long strvtch of traveling made a chance to walk around particularly welcome, and when the cab reached Portland Heights, they had the driver wait for them while they clambered about up and down the hills, looked at the view, pointed out trees and shrubs familiar to them in Eng land, and enjoyed themselves generally. Although Lord Northcliffe has been in the United States nearly SO times In the last 10 or IB years, he has never before been on the Paciflo Coast. Good Words for Portland. "I think I have had a particularly fa vorable opportunity for observing a Western city," he said after the drive. Portland is a town of very solid growth, and it is a beautiful city. It seems won aerful to think that in 60 years a town of such proportions and one with Its large, substantial buildings should have grown out of what was wild country." Lord Northcliffe asked many questions about Portland. He was particularly Im pressed with its possibilities aa a grain and timber distributing center and asked about the condition and depth of the channel down the Columbia River to the ocean. From that he went to the ques tioa of what sort of fuel was most used here. When he learned that oil Is burned on the locomotives of the Harrlman lines, he said at once that he was going to Inspect the locomotive of the train taking him south, as he had never before seen an oil-burning engine and was curious to look one over. On one subject Lord Northcliffe was very serious. That was the necessity of England's maintaining at any cost its naval supremacy and the danger of war with Germany. Concerning this, he said: 'You ask me as to the present state of affairs In Europe. Well, there, have been the outspoken declarations of Mr. Asqulth Britain's Prime Minister; of Sir Edward Gray, the Foreign Minister, and the solemn warning of Lord Roseberry In his superb speech before the Imperial Press Conference. Tou have the facts be fore you that Germany has refused to discuss ber vast armaments, that the whole of her shipbuilding yards are en gaged' In naval construction, that scores of her leading writers make no secret of her Intentions, that she has on previous occasions made unprovoked and sudden attacks on other nations, that the ves sels she Is building are designed for commerce destroying purposes, and for lighting with an enemy that Is near at hand. . , Thinlca Optimism Foolish. "Tou know also that the Kaiser- has declared. In public declaration that the future of Germany Is on the water. In the face of these significant facts I fear - that any foolish optimism is greatly to aTSfttln is really a vast factory On an Island smaller than the State of Oreeon 46.0CO.0W people are crowded. Practically every bit of the food for those 4POfliW persons must come In from otner countries over the water, and It Is abso lutely necessary. as you can see, that she maintains her naval supremacy at hat ever cost. Great Britain itself produces practically nothing. It Is almost en tirely a manufacturing nation, the prod ucts manufactured coming In from other countries. Last year in manufactured products the country exported more than The whole United States. I say that It produces practically nothing by itself perhaps one-seventh of the population Is engaged in agricultural occupations, but they do not prod" enough food for mnre than a small part of the people. Unfortunately you hear eo little out here of what is really happening-, and most Americans are too busy to travel, that unless you study your newspapers closely you have very little Idea of what Is really transpiring." ... ... Lord Northcliffe also spoke Interesting ly on his Impressions of America and Americans. "In Europe." he said, 'you will find that the common Idea of an American is of a man of hoggish ten dencies, who spends his time trying to devise means for making money. Even before I came to thle country and I have been here about 3 times my conception, on the other hand, of the American was , of a man who Is always trying to get I new Ideas, who Is Constantly striving to devise new and better methods of doin vino nn vhn trie, to lm Drove himself. Americans have boundless energy. There Is one noticeable thing about America and American Institutions, how ever. 'That is the great sameness to everything. Men and women dress Wie same, they talk the same, their customs are ths same. There, for instance. Is a young man" pointing to a passerby on the sldewalk-' who Is dressed exactly like 20 other young men you would see In a few minutes In any large city in the country. The newspapers here are also much the same. "However, within the past ten years there has been a great Improvement in the editorial columns of most American papers. Up to that time there were a few Journals whose editorial columns were of great merit, while the rest were mediocre, but now aearly all the papers have good editorial pages." Northcliffe came Into especial prom inence last year through his purchase of the controlling Interest In the famous Thunderer." the London Times, from the Watters family. Northcllffe's name first became known through the founding of the London Dally Mail a publication which ha now a cir culation or about 1.000.000 copies daily. He also owns the London Express and more than 60 other periodicals from dallies to monthly magazines. He created his career entirely by his own efforts, start ing out as a poor boy and beginning nls newspaper work as an ordinary reporter. Each of hi ventures, however, proved a success, and several years ago. while he was still a young man, he was elajf to the peerage, becoming Viscount Nortn- C"vhen he and his party return to Lon don after their trip over the United States and Canada, they will have trav eled about 15.730 miles AMUSEMENTS WHAT PRESS AGENTS SAY Musical Play Tonight at Bungalow.
