Noted Xewspapr Man on Tonp of Oregon Will Come to Port land Next Week. WALLOWA. Or.. Aug. 10. Special) W. E. Curtis, of the Chicago Record Herald, recognized as one of the fore most writers in the country, accompanied by his wife and daughter, arrived In Wallowa County today in the special business car California and will spend the night at Joseph, where he will be en tertained by Joseph citizens, headed by F. D. McCully and T. V. Rumble. Ac companying him on the trip are William MfMurray. general passenger agent; J. L. Matheson, assistant superintendent; J. H. O'Neill, traveling passenger agant, of the O. R. & K.. and E. W. Rumble, of Lagr&nde. Mr. Curtis Is making a special trip through the Northwest, and is writing up the country from his observations for the Record-Herald. His article today will describe the Wallowa YaJI-y as seen on his hurried trip. Tomorrow will be spent In the Grand Ronde Valley, where he will Inspect the sugar be-t fields and the big George Palmer sawmill. He will then go to Meacham and take the trip over land by the old trail to Pendleton. He will spend a week in Oregon before reaching Portland. TWO SMALL BLAZES OCCUR Rubbish Heap and Pool of Oil Call Out l ire department. The Fire Department was called out twice last n!g?it between 6 and 7 o'clock for Inconsequential blazes. The first was In a, rubbish heap In a vacant lot at Fif teenth and Taylor streets and was put out without any damage. The second was a flight blaz.- in the terminal yards at Third and Irving streets. Drippings from n oil tank which had collected into a large pool on the ground became Ignited from a lighted match which some care less smoker had dropped in passing, and biased up, creating a great deal of smoke. Employes In the yards, fearing for the safety of the oil tanks, began to work before the arrival of the Ilremen. They put out the flr by shoveling ashes upon It from a nearby track. When the lire men arrived the fire was out. No damage w&e done. PLAGUE SIGNS NOT FOUND Test for Dread Malady Xot Vet Complele, However. After carefully examining the guinea, pigs that were inoculated two days ago to determine the disease of which John McCartbey died last Sunday morning. It. Ralph C. Matson. who is conducting the investigations, announced last night that he had found no positive signs of plague in either of the two animals. He further said the weight of evidence was against such a condition. The examination last night, however, snowed germH of blood poison. Plague evidences require from two to five days to develop. As the guinea pigs were inoculated only two days ago the disease has hardly had time to manifest itself. The animals will be closely watched until the full. In cubation period has passed. H.J'.MEAGHERDIES QUICKLY Taken III Monday Afternoon and Expires Tuesday Afternoon. H. J. Mrasher, a timber dealer, with offices In the Lumbermen's Building, did at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Good Samaritan Hospital from heart dis ease. Mr. Mt apher was tiiken suddenly ill at Ms home. 307 Twenty-second street, on Monday. Dr. Kerron was called and advised the removal of the sufferer to the hospital at once. Being 2 ye:irs of ae and feeble, Mr. Meagher was unable to rally from the at tack and died alter every effort had been made to save him. He is survived by a wife and two daughters. The family has lived In Portland for the- past four years, having come here from Boston. Mass., where they have a number of relatives end many friends. Archhil.op Kean to Stay. ST. PAUL, Aug. 10. Archbishop John J. Kean. who is visiting Archbiship Ire land here, says the statement from St. lxuis that he contemplates retiring from active duty is misleading.
