THE OREGOXIAX, TUESDAY., JULY 13, 1909. 11 MUSSES LACK IN EARNING CAPACITY Dr. Eugene May Lectures at Chautauqua on Problems of Poverty. DICKENS' BOOKS DISCUSSED MontarUle Flowers Addresses Ap preciative Audience "Swat the Fly "Will Be Topic Before Biology Class Today. CHAUTAUQUA GROUNDS. Gladstone Park. July 12. (Fpecial.) Dr. Eugene May. author and traveler of Washington, L. C. and Montavllle Flowers were the principal attractions at Chautauqua to day. With prime weather there was a large and happy crowd of people on the ftround and thry heard the lecture, listened to the band conceits and saw the finish of a cranking good ball game between Cnnhy and Clackamas. Dr. May makes a business of lecturing. He has traveled extensively and his talk this afternoon was headed. '"Come Up FmilinR." He delved in the philosophy of life, and talked of the unprepared condi tion of the masses of the people for earn ing their daily bread. Problems of' Pov erty was also taken up by Dr. May. Dickens' "Christmas Carol" was given tonight by Montaville Flowers to an ap preciative audience. The various charac ters of the book were well portrayed and Mr. Flowers made a second hit of the session. Before his appearance the Knickerbocker Quartet, of ian Francisco, sang for the first time. They are too well known to require introduction, for in the Bay City they rank hich and have sung all over California. They will be at the Chautauqua all week, singing tomorrow afternoon, and on later programmes. Riley's Poem Recited. Dr. May will lecture tomorrow night. Ms suhject being "With a Knapsack Through Switzerland Up the Matterhorn Mountains." Many people were at the Forum this morning and they were delighted with the recital of a number of James Whitcomb Riley's poems by Miss Emmn. Perley Lin coln, who is related to Abraham Lincoln. In many respects she. Is the most charm ing personality that has appeared this year on the platform and she modestly slipped away so that her admirers were not able to locate her. Miss Lincoln hails from Minneapolis. She was followed by Dr. Osmon Royal, of Portland, who talked on "Nervousness in Children." He was listened to by an audience composed mostly of mothers, and he finished the Forum hour by a multitude of questions that he answered to the satisfaction of everybody. This morning's programme may lead to a regular question box at the Forum. The congress of mothers will be held at 11 o'clock tomorrow, and Miss Mary Montgomery, of Portland, will speak for the Consumers' League. Thomas J. Pennell, baritone soloist of Chautauqua, had a musical class of nearly 60 students this morning. This un usual popularity of the class is probably due to the excellent work of the Chau " tauqua chorus on. the platform yesterday. ' Mrs. Alice VVelster. of Portland, will talk on "Art," at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning1. Her lecture will be Illus trated and will take place in the Sweet ser pavilion under the auspices of the "Woman's Club of Portland. "Swat the Fly" Today's Topic. The lecture in biology took up a dis cussion of the evolution of sex and its meaning. Tomorrow is Woman's Day, and by request the biology class hour will be changed to' 10 o'clock. The special suhject will be "Swat the Fly." and an attempt will be made to show that this is one of the most dangerous members of the animal kingdom, and on this account no effort should be spared to remove breeding places and to protect homes from their entrance. The subject -will' be taken up from a practical point of view and illustrated by the stereoptlcon. Canby took a bigr lead in the ball frame this afternoon and threatened to shut out Clackamas. With the score 4 to 0 against them in the last half of the ninth inning. Clackamas had a battins rally and made three runs. "With runners on second and third and only one down, the prospects were black for Canby, but Shermer rose to the occasion and wlffed Stokes and Krueger, ending the matinee. Stokes and Brock were the battery for Clack amas and Shermer and White for Can by. Tomorrow Oswego and Gladstone will play. If Gladstone loses tomor row she will have a narrow path to stay in until the ond and have a chance for the pennant. The programme for tomorrow. Special.) in tha Justice Court trial of Julius Jensen, a Chinook, trapper, who was ar rested by .Deputy Warden Rathbun for violating, the Sunday fishing law, the Jury found the defendant guilty as charged, but .recommended the "utmrjst leniency of the court." Jensen was fined t-50 and costs, which is the lowest pen alty aiiowoci unaer me law. According to the testimony, Jensen was round taking fish from his trap on Sunday morning, but he claimed that under an agteement made between the fisheries authorities of both Oregon and Washington and the trappers. It was lawful to take out fish on Sunday If they were caught before 6 o'clock on Saturday night. The officers also swore that the apron on the defendant's trap did not reach within three feet or the bottom of the river, and that there was a hole tn the apron sufficient ly targe for a man to crawl through, The defense claimed that the trap was located in the State of Washington and not subject to the concurrent juris diction between the States of Oregon and Washington in the enforcement of the fishing laws. Jensen admitted that when the apron was raised on Sunday morning mere was a hole in it, bu said. U was caused by drift float! ni In the river and was not there when he lowered the apron on Saturday nignt. The case haa attracted considerable THE PORTLAND PORTLAND, OR.
