MILWAUKEE READY TOPOURINFREIGHT Territory of Portland Markets Becomes Largely Increased. SCHEDULE IS MADE PUBLIC w Road Prepared to Handle Ship merits From All Points on Its Line to Portland Through Agreement With O. II. & x. By the publication yesterday of the freight schedule, of the Chicago. Milwau kee A St. Paul and the statement by the local officials that the road is now prepared to handle freight from points on Its line to Portland, the territory tributary to Portland markets becomes enormously Increased. Liocal Jobbers have believed the trade along the Milwaukee would become tribu tary to Seattle, at any rate until the Milwaukee extension to Portland, via the Tacoma Eastern or otherwise, is com pleted, but from the announcement made yesterday by Milwaukee officials, it ap pears as if a large part of the road la to be directly for the benefit of Portland. Freight will be handled via the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul as far as Plummer, Idaho, and will then be connected with 0. R. & N. freight trains via the O. R. & N. for Portland in accordance with the recent track agreement announced by R. B. Miller, general freight agent of the Harrlman lines In the Northwest. From a casual study of a railroad map It would appear that while Portland has the benefit of freight originating in points east of Plummer, Seattle or Tacoma would control that from Plummer to the Coast. The contrary Is said to be., the case. While Seattle will undoubtedly share with Tacoma the territory on the (Milwaukee between the Columbia River end the Puget Sound cities, yet from Plummer to the Columbia, it is said, the traffic will be hauled east to Plummer, then via the O. R. & N. route to Port land. This Is because both of these routes are on water grade and no rail road is believed to be wasteful enough to haul produce over a high grade when a natural water grade route Is provided. Between Plummer and the Columbia River the fertility of the country can liardly he exaggerated. The building of the Milwaukee road has given a tremen dous impetus to the country and ship ments now are ready to move. In the in thPr TVl11 be 'wheat shipments that will rival those from any other Washing ton section and In the past this wheat has all eventually found its way to the Sound. Whether with the conclusion In a year or in several years of the Milwaukee agreement with the O. R. & N Port land, will sUll hold this favorable posi tion Is hardly discussed among railroad men. but it would appear that if the Milwaukee continues on friendly terms j'n th Harrmmn interests, Portland at least make an even break with the Northern cities. Despite the statement recently attrib uted to President Barling, the schedules re the usual transcontinental freight bureau supplements, with the badge of the Milwaukee super-printed. The sup plements are enclosed in an effective folder entitled "The New Gateway. Now 1. Tn." . Because of an oversight on the part of County Judge Webster to issue an order declaring the result of the local option election, held In District 53 of Multnomah County, containing Kern Park, or the failure of the County Clerk's office to record it, if it was Issued, the prohibition law in that precinct will in all probability be declared inoperative. The election in this district was held in 1906 and no record can be found in the County Clerk's office that the order was issued by Judge Webster. Since that time the district has been subdivided and Kern Park is in District 96. It is now believed by attorneys, by reason of this fact, that the order would be invalid If Issued at this time. This information came to light follow ing an investigation by the District At torney's office in the case of W A Schooling, the Kern Park iceman "and agent of the Mount Hood Brewery, who S PUREICY' firm of Waddell & Harrington, nits bane aaministration as deslgn trwr.turpa n f 1 1 a irmll t v. i j across the Morrison span, -con- was arrested last Tuesday on a charge of selling beer, of which there were four complaints. When the ca.se was called yesterday afternoon before Justice Olson the state asked for a continuance and a further search is being made for the order. It was stated late yesterday after noon that all efforts to locate It have been fruitless. . The Btate will now proceed on the theory that the statute requiring the County Judge to make an order is super fluous and that by his neglect the ex pressed will of the people cannot he set aside, according to Deputy District At torney Fltzg-erald. Schooling first announced that he would fight the case on the ground that he was the agent of the Mount Hood Brewing Company and only took, orders for future delivery. This plan of defense, however, has been changed and Attorney John A. Jeffrey will contend for him that there is no prohibition law until the statute has been complied with. The case will come up next Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Han Pablo Shipping News. SAJT PABLO. Cal., July 9. The steamer Shasta arrived today from Belllngham with lumber.
